Shaw Media’s Ride to Conquer Cancer

12 Small business is Shaw’s business

On the cover of this issue of Shaw Times is one of the brave

individuals who rappelled down Shaw Tower as part of the

Dare to Leap event held in April in Vancouver. Together with

our community partner, Outward Bound, we hosted the

event to create awareness and raise funds to improve the

lives of urban youth.

Giving back to our community has always been an important

part of how we succeed at Shaw. We have been honoured to

work with some remarkable community partners to support

their work that improves the lives and opportunities available

for kids and youth. In the past few months, you may have

noticed that we are doing more to tell our charitable partners’

stories, by giving them more voice and exposure under the

umbrella of SKIP (Shaw Kids Investment Program).

Without a doubt, Shaw’s charitable spirit is a reflection of your

own personal support for organizations that are meaningful to

you and your own community. Your efforts are a distinctive part

of Shaw’s culture and this issue of Shaw Times puts a spotlight

on many of our people. From the Global News community

initiatives, to the grass roots fundraising happening in our

offices across the country, it’s heartening to see the generosity

of our teams in action.

The Dare to Leap event couldn’t have come at a better time

as it also reflects what we’re doing as a business.

Over the past year we have taken our own leap forward to

become stronger—taking on new business initiatives like shomi

and ViaWest, developing centres of expertise to better serve

our customers, restructuring Shaw Media to improve its

positioning as a media business, and launching a new approach

at Shaw Business, one that is Powered by Shaw. We’ve shown

that we have a plan of action and are well prepared for the risks

we undertake, much like the rappellers featured in this issue.

This year has been transformational, to say the least, and we’ve

gone through a lot of changes and put in a great deal of work to

bring us to where we are today. All of that hard work is paying

off and it’s gratifying to see the momentum building and each

of us moving forward. Thank you for daring to leap with us.

You’ll hear a lot about rappelling in this issue so we thought we better

explain ourselves. Rappelling is a method of descending from the top of

a climb (or building) by sliding down a rope. Did you know that rappelling

is also known as abseiling? It is derived from the German abseilen meaning

“to rope down”, which will make a lot of sense when you see the rappellers

in action, later in this issue.

In April, 75 brave (cough, crazy, cough) participants roped, slid or

rappelled down Shaw Tower (the third tallest building in Vancouver!)

in support of Outward Bound Canada’s new Vancouver Urban Program,

providing hundreds of ‘at-risk’ youth the opportunity to take part in a

life-transforming experience.

Here are some fun facts about rappelling for your next

dinner party:

• Most climbing historians credit the development of the

rappel to Jean Estéril Charlet, a French climber who developed

the technique of abseiling.

• The world record for the longest rappel was down a 3,000 foot

rock face called El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in 2013.

• Australian abseiling is the process of descending a fixed rope in a

standing position while facing the ground. And you thought it didn’t

get crazier than sliding down the side of a building using rope!

That’s probably enough about rappelling, as American rock climber

(and climbing writer) Chuck Pratt, said “Writing about climbing is boring.

I would rather go climbing.” Meet you in the mountains?

Good TimesThere’s never a dull moment at Shaw! Check out some of the good times at offices across the country.

1 Lethbridge Tech Ops participated in the Winter Soldier Competition in

support of Lethbridge Family Services. They not only won most money

pledged, but also best dressed! 2 Jonathan is a Shaw Business Technician

in Prince George. While working one morning, he got a shocking call from

the Vancouver General Hospital Millionaire Lottery Corp. letting him know

he had won $2.5 million. He has no plans to leave Shaw because, he says,

“It is the best job and the greatest people I have ever worked with.”

3 Anthony Farnell, Chief Meteorologist for Global News in Toronto, gave

the Toronto cub scouts a newsroom tour and a weather lesson. 4 The

team in Toronto was creative with their Earth Day bookmarks and started

6 The Shaw Direct team participated in the Spartan Race in Mont Tremblant,

a series of obstacle races. 7 It’s hands all in for the new Global News team as

they start their new roles. 8 Shaw Court celebrated the opening of their deck

6 SUMMER 2015 SUMMER 2015 7

Ron McKenzie recently took on the role of Senior Vice President, Business and is leading Shaw Business, Powered by Shaw. Ron sat down with us to discuss Shaw Business’s new strategic direction and what it means to have the full strength of Shaw supporting it.

Q. Tell us about your journey at Shaw.

A. I started my journey as the President of Mountain Cable,

a small telecommunications company in Hamilton that

was acquired by Shaw in 2009. My job was to transition

Mountain Cable into Shaw and once that was underway,

I moved to Calgary into the role of VP, Sales for Shaw Business.

After about eight months, I switched to the Consumer side,

taking on the role of VP, Operations. Now I’m back in

Shaw Business after five and a half years at Shaw.

Q. What are some of your most valuable career

experiences at Shaw?

A. I loved my role as VP, Operations because it gave me a

great opportunity to connect with the branches across the

country. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with our teams from

Vancouver Island to Sault Ste. Marie, you can pick every little

town in between. Working for Chris Kucharski and the Consumer

team gave me great insight into how we operate, how we

execute, and how we create great customer experiences. It

gave me a good understanding of the power of Shaw and how

we come together from an operational perspective.

Q. How is customer experience embedded into the

strategy for Shaw Business?

A. Our commitment to growth and serving our business

customers is at the core of the changes we’ve made recently.

The reorganization will allow us to provide additional services,

increased value, a second-to-none overall experience, and

exceptional connectivity. By better supporting our customers’

needs, we enable the success of their businesses and increase

their likelihood to recommend, attracting new customers to

Shaw Business.

Q. Why are we making a shift in Shaw Business now?

A. Currently, Shaw Business holds less than 10% of market

share in the six billion dollar business market. Companies with

fewer than 100 employees represent the biggest growth

potential for the services we can offer and the largest share

of the market. We recognized there were opportunities to

adjust our operations to better serve our business customers

and their evolving needs, as well as realize the full potential

of Shaw Business.

Q. What’s the goal for Shaw Business?

A. The goal that we are striving towards is creating a growth

engine for Shaw, and that means all of Shaw, not just

Shaw Business. We’re all in this together. Everyone has a role

we can play, hence Shaw Business, Powered by Shaw.

Q. What does Powered by Shaw mean?

A. Being Powered by Shaw means we leverage the strength

and expertise of our Shaw teams. We’re working on new

products with TNO, developing our brand with Marketing,

incorporating WiFi into our team… we’re truly structuring our

organization around the full support of Shaw.

It’s incredibly powerful to have the support of Shaw behind

us. We want every Shaw employee asking their dry cleaner,

their realtor, their lawyer, “Hey, do you have Shaw Business

services?” Imagine if all 14,000 employees asked the question

the next time they go to the dentist, the next time they are at

their corner store, and got the word out. That is Shaw Business

Powered by Shaw.

Q. What excites you most about Shaw Business?

A. What gets me so excited is that we don’t have to create

a market, the market is there. I can’t think of one business

that doesn’t require Internet and voice services. The small

business market has been looking for choice for so long and

we can be the trusted advisor they turn to for voice and

managed data services.

“People cite WiFi as one of the most important amenities,”

explains Product Development Manager, Andres Canalizo,

another member of the Managed WiFi team. “No longer are

guests choosing hotels based on comfort, free breakfast, hot

water, or even HBO or cable—people make their decision

based on how good their Internet connection is.”

This initial deployment went so smoothly in part because of

the existing expertise of the Shaw Go WiFi teams, said Andres.

“Our teams are able to quickly design great WiFi coverage in

any type of condition. They can look at a blueprint of the hotel

and the materials and say ‘This is the way to get the best

coverage everywhere.’ Their knowledge and experience in this

area were invaluable!”

At the same time, Shaw’s pre-provisioning team, the

Shaw Business National TSR team from Nanaimo, was able

to set up the hotel’s sign-in splash page and administrative

settings using a cloud-based solution from Cisco-Meraki.

MANAGED WiFi, POWERED BY TNO

“ No longer are guests choosing hotels based on comfort, free breakfast, hot water, or even HBO or cable—people make their decision based on how good their internet connection is.”

18 months of work from dozens of Shaw employees in

multiple departments and roles, using feedback collected

during a trial project as well as extensive customer research.

For Don Annett, the defining moment of Shaw’s inaugural

Managed WiFi for hospitality project was activating the

dashboard management tool and watching the screen

light-up with activity as guests started logging-in.

“During the official launch of the project, going into the

dashboard and seeing that it was up and working...that

was a very proud moment,” said Don, a Senior Network

Architect in TNO. He was part of the 20-person core team

supporting the very first deployment of Shaw Managed WiFi

for hospitality.

Shaw developed the hospitality solution based on industry

data that revealed the value to a hotel of offering reliable,

universal WiFi coverage.

Managed WiFi is an important part of the Shaw Business

strategy and truly demonstrates the potential of

Shaw Business, Powered by Shaw. In order to be the trusted

advisor to small businesses, we’re looking to expand our

services and to do so, Shaw Business is working more

closely than ever with Technology Network Operations

(TNO). Together, we’ve launched Managed WiFi in the

hospitality industry.

Managed WiFi represents a different approach for Shaw:

rather than acting strictly as an Internet service provider,

with Managed WiFi, Shaw acts as integrator of services,

providing the network, installing the Cisco-Meraki cloud

based tool and managing that tool on the client’s behalf.

The Country Inn and Suites in north Calgary is the first of

many Managed WiFi for hospitality launches scheduled at

hotels across the country this year. Launching Managed

WiFi at the Country Inn Hotel was the culmination of over

Thanks to good planning and collaboration, both teams were

ready to launch at the same time.

The project was a great model of relationship-building. Shaw

employees worked very effectively with their start-up-style,

San Francisco-based Cisco-Meraki counterparts.

“We really gelled as a team,” Don said. “There was a lot of

give-and-take, and passing along of different skills. Ultimately,

we worked really well together and it was a nice opportunity

to have multiple teams working and learning from each other.”

Small

BuSINESS IS SHAW’S BuSINESS

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the growth

engine for our cities. That’s why Shaw Business is making a shift

—emphasizing growth with a specific focus on driving customer

acquisition in the small and medium business segments.

As the demands on small businesses continue to grow, these

businesses need to be agile and stay connected. Our vision is to create

a connected office, using the power of Shaw, to deliver solutions to our

business customers to ensure they never miss a thing.

So how do we create a connected office? We offer our customers

Managed WiFi for Business, an innovative platform that gives

business customers access to a robust network solution that

includes their own private network connection, Shaw Go WiFi

and guest WiFi access to meet the needs of their business and

their customers. With cloud-based technology, we can manage all

aspects of their wireless network from security to troubleshooting

and support issues. Managed WiFi ensures that business owners

stay connected at the office and on the road on a secure network

backed by the expertise and reach of Shaw Go WiFi.

focus | SHAW BUSINESS

AT THE HELM OF SHAW BuSINESS

Small business is big in Canada. It’s so big that in 2013, 98.2% of Canadian business was made up of small businesses according to Industry Canada.*

* ic.gc.ca/eic/site/061.nsf/eng/02804.html

Leanne Shaw-Brotherston (no relation!),

General Manager at the Country Inn & Suites

By Carlson, says since the hotel switched to

Shaw Managed WiFi she has seen a steady

increase in customer satisfaction scores

rating High Speed Internet.

“It is a more dedicated system for our guests and it provides them with greater bandwidth and faster speed, and it is entirely managed through Shaw Business,” she says. “If there are any concerns it’s simply one call to Shaw Business to their dedicated support department for Internet and Managed WiFi.”

Managed WiFi is already a success in the hospitality industry. It was one of those Friday mornings in Victoria that makes

you realize you may actually be in the most beautiful place

in the world. I was lucky enough to be in BC’s capital and

decided to take the Business team up on the opportunity to

attend an install at a local business—The Breakwater Café

and Bistro on Dallas Road.

The Shaw Business UB installer team of Gabriel (Gabe) Huang

and Bill Fokkema were our hosts (the talented Kim Robinson

from Shaw TV joined us with her trusty camera) and Gabe gave

me a quick run-down on the customer before we showed up.

Michael and Adam Helm are multi-generational pub owners

(their parents were the original proprietors of Maude Hunters

and Christie’s Pub in Victoria), and they are hands-on small

business owners who have the restaurant business in their

blood. We met with Michael, who is both affable and driven,

and he was quick to greet us and share his vision for his

business (as well as his coffee!).

The site was bustling with other trades as Michael’s idea for an

outdoor patio extension was coming to life, and it was clear

this was not Gabriel and Bill’s first visit to Breakwater. Like old

friends, they connected on what needed to be done, shared

a few laughs and got to work. There was no doubt they knew

what they were doing and were efficient and unfailingly polite

in their roles. They each knew their position and worked in

sync, often finishing each other’s thoughts. A dynamic-duo

of sorts.

Safety was top of mind on the site and before we knew it they

had re-wired, re-jigged (perhaps not an official term!), and

re-connected the Internet jacks in all the right places. What

stood out for me was not the connection they made through

the walls, but the one they already had with their customer.

Knowing the Shaw Business strategy for personalized service

is one thing, seeing it in action is another.

So if you’re lucky enough to live in Victoria, or are there

for a visit, pop over to the Breakwater Café and Bistro—or

their other restaurant, McRae’s Bistro—and enjoy the view

and a pint. Let Michael and Adam know Gabriel and Bill

recommended it!

This past April, we introduced a new level of support for

Shaw Business customers as we launched our first ever Shaw

Business Customer Support Representative (CSR) team. This

team will be a customer support engine which offers our Sales

and Operations teams an internal partnership, driving towards

a customer-centric organization. This customer support team

will specialize in concierge-style customer service where the

customer is treated similar to a VIP hotel guest ensuring

that the Shaw Business experience is world-class.

Thanks to the support of our amazing network of sales and

operations colleagues, we’ve trained a new group of agents

who have already been wow-ing our customers.

Darcy Allard Senior Warehouse Technician: Winnipeg

We have made huge strides in cost avoidance and

waste reduction by using a concept called re-order

point planning (ROP)—a technique that allows

us to forecast the minimum amount of equipment to have on-hand

to meet customer demand. We have gone from having no room, to

having all the aisles clear of skids!

Tony Matos Supervisor, Supply Chain, Satellite Operations: Mississauga

After using principles from Lean, two teams at the Eastern

Distribution Centre (EDC) realized that merging operations

would eliminate unnecessary travel and enhance the

customer experience. With the RTC Order Fulfillment Team and Activation

Team working closer together, they’ve been able to increase productivity by

20% and get equipment to our customers faster!

SUMMER 2015 1514 SUMMER 2015

Whether we’re negotiating costs with service companies,

bringing on the next great hardware supplier, or delivering the

right equipment to the right warehouse, Supply Chain helps

ensure our customers won’t miss a thing.

The Supply Chain team works in partnership with stakeholders

across the business to optimize the sourcing, delivery, receipt,

storage, and distribution of goods and services, both inside

and outside of Shaw. By finding process efficiencies and cost

savings, Supply Chain is saving Shaw millions of dollars.

At the heart of building a more efficient work environment,

Lean is a Supply Chain initiative that inspires employees to

identify inefficiencies in the workplace and implement solutions

to fix them. This philosophy has become a standard practice in

many warehouses, including the National Distribution Centre

(NDC), Eastern Distribution Centre (EDC), and regional Supply

Chain sites.

“Lean is often misunderstood. It isn’t about ‘doing more with

less’. In fact, by driving out the waste in our processes it allows

us to deliver an exceptional experience for our employees and

customers with less effort,” explained Mike Dressler, Manager,

Lean and Continuous Improvement.

Rhonda Hey, Supervisor, CPE Fulfillment, NDC, Calgary:

We made equipment staging easier by

moving from one-person packing stations

to a light manufacturing production line. In

the new setup, we unpack, process, and

package the equipment in stages resulting

in faster processing times and improving

safety. We have reduced work-in-process

(WIP) from nine days of inventory to one

day—a remarkable transformation!

Johnny Zakharia, Supervisor, Test and Repair

Centre, NDC, Calgary:

Before Lean, we were able to test 1,100

set-top boxes in 45 daily hours, but after

involving the team and implementing a

smarter workflow, we are now testing

3,200 set-top boxes in 49 daily hours. This

means that an 8% increase in man hours

resulted in a 191% increase in output!

Noé Morales, Specialist, Lean and Continuous

Improvement, Regional Supply Chain:

In Supply Chain we’re implementing

an organization initiative called 5S.

Following five steps – Sort, Set-in-order,

Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. By

identifying unneeded inventory within

our work areas, several of our regions

have produced great cost avoidance

totalling over $874,616 this year!

We asked some of the employees from Supply Chain how they are Living Lean:

Shaw Retail: We love our customers and they love us!

“ Michael was absolutely fantastic! Right from the moment we walked into the store, we were

more than pleased with the service. He really took his time to go through our plan and help us

decide what best suited our needs and where we could save money. We ended up upgrading

our Internet, renting two HD boxes and signing a two year service contract and got a free PVR

It really depends what stage of the editorial process I’m in—research, interviewing, writing or editing. Long-form journalism means the days are long and I ‘take the story home with me’ every night.

While I don’t have a clear-cut favourite, one of the most memorable stories I’ve worked on is the piece I did on the polygamous community of Bountiful, BC. I spent two weeks inside the community and it was an eye-opening experience.

I’ve been thrown into the backroom of a jail in Mexico—after a car chase. I hiked a mountain in the Rockies to capture a story on an ice cave and, most recently, I pursued a provocative investigation into the RCMP—one which continues to encourage discussion and promote change.

I make a point of doing yoga and Pilates and I spend time with my husband, Bill, and my family.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a journalist? 16X9’s Chief Correspondent, Carolyn Jarvis, has spent more than a decade reporting and chasing stories across the country for Global News. In 2011, after five postings from Vancouver to Ottawa, Carolyn moved to Toronto to work full-time with 16X9.

Some of Carolyn’s stories have given her unprecedented

access to otherwise closed-off communities, such as her

hour-long feature on the controversial, ultra-orthodox

Jewish community of Lev Tahor or her in-depth profile

of the polygamist community of Bountiful, B.C.

Carolyn likens herself to a marathon runner; while much

of news is more like sprinting (to a tight deadline), deep

investigative work requires a longer-term investment.

Like many journalists, one career perk Carolyn finds most

satisfying is her ability to affect positive change.

At Shaw, our technicians and installers make over 180,000 visits a month.

We wanted to learn what it was like to be a part of the in-home experience

and Dan Seafoot, a Unit Based Installer in Winnipeg, agreed to tell us

what a typical day is like.

After growing up in Brandon, Manitoba and graduating

from Assiniboine Community College, Dan moved to

Winnipeg in 2003 where he began his career at Shaw as

a Technical Service Representative. After eight months,

he transitioned into Technical Operations as a Service

Technician where he worked for eight years, assisting

and troubleshooting issues with cable, phone and

Internet. Dan then took an opportunity outside Shaw

to work in the IT field but after a year, felt something

was missing. After a quick call to his old supervisor

at Shaw, he rejoined the Shaw team as a Unit

Based Installer and has been in this role now for

over three years.

In his own words, Dan tells us about a typical

day for him.

“First things first, I grab coffee and breakfast,

review my Workorders and check what

equipment I need for the day before calling

my customers to arrange my day. I usually

try to work around my customer’s schedules,

filling in my day with disconnects, and helping

other technicians. Not everyone is home

right at 4:00pm for their 4:00-6:00pm

appointment time!”

What’s it really like to be a Shaw tech?

A DAY IN THE LIFE.

Call 2: The next call was for

the installation of an HD cable

box, in the same building as

the first call. It’s always nice to

have two in the same building!

This customer was a 91 year

old woman from Toronto,

transitioning from Rogers

to Shaw. She knew how to

use her digital cable box and

remote from Rogers, but ours

is different and providing our

customers with the information

they need is important to me.

Call 1: My first call of the

day had me upgrading a

customer from Standard

Definition to High

Definition. This customer

needed an enhanced

demo on the new remote

control and new guide on

the cable box.

Call 3: In my third call of the day I was installing a Whole

Home Gateway and two portals along with Internet. I had

actually installed Internet for this customer’s roommate

previously, so this made for an easy install, since I already

knew the cabling, house and customer.

Call 4: This customer called

me back since I had left an

earlier message letting her

know I could likely come

earlier, so I did. I replaced

the cable from the back

lane to the house and took

the time to make it right

and ensure everything was

up to Shaw standards.

Call 5: My last call of the day

was a Triple Play (PVR, phone

and wireless Internet) install

in a newly renovated house.

The customer had no cable

at all inside the house and an

old copper RG59 cable from

the house to the back lane.

Bigger job! Time to get to

work and make it right for

the customer!

This particular customer was

very friendly and chatty, I

enjoy chatting while I work

because getting to know

people is what makes the

job really enjoyable. This call

took two hours to complete.

It was my last of the day, so I

prefer to take my time to do

a good job.

Dan, we need your help!

Slide to answer

“Working with my customers to find a

cable solution that best suits their needs,

helping them with technical issues or

boundaries they have, and assisting

my fellow technicians are what make

this job amazing.”

With Shaw Times being

we asked some of

our longest standing

employees what it has

been like to grow with

our company.

35YEARS

Louise Williams Hiring role Customer Service Rep—Retail office for Western Cablesystems

Current role Project Coordinator II, National Technical Operations, Surrey

Year started 1977

Why do you love your role?

I have resided in the same office for all of the 38 years. I have stayed so

long because I really enjoy the people I work with, the variety of duties,

and the atmosphere of a ‘small’ office.

Tim Spelliscy Hiring role News Reporter

Current role Station Manager—Global Edmonton/Director of Community Integration— Global News

Year started 1979

What’s the biggest change you’ve experienced working at Shaw for over 35 years?

Moving from typewriters to computers, from film to tape to digital,

live news coverage, robotic cameras, virtual sets and mostly the

expansion of news. From five hours per week in 1979 to almost 50

hours per week now! Well, 46.5 hours to be exact.

Wayne McDougall Hiring role Assistant Program Director

Current role Producer, Shaw TV, Penticton

Year started 1978

What do you like most about your current role?

The variety and creativity is always changing, fresh and new. As new

technologies and processes present their unique challenges, the

constant is helping people in our community tell their story to others.

As an avid bagpiper, Wayne, along with one of the local Shaw techs,

helps organize the Penticton Scottish Festival Highland Games.

Rajal’s Story"When I arrived in Calgary, the city was covered in a soft, white

blanket of snow. It was the first time I had travelled outside

my home country, India, and I was nervous about what my life

in Canada would be like.

I have always been a working woman and soon started

missing being busy with my work. I started moving forward

with my job search, but to my surprise I did not get a

single call for an interview after applying for more than a

hundred jobs.

Through my online searches and talking with friends,

I discovered the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association

(CIWA). CIWA accepted me into the Office Administration

Program which included 14 weeks of in-class training and a ten

week internship. The in-class training was amazing and I learnt

a lot about the Canadian workplace culture. To my surprise

there were so many differences for all my classmates in the

way we worked in our home countries. The course helped

me understand the people and culture in Canada and how to

navigate the workplace.

After the 14 weeks of in-class training, it was time for my

10 week placement and I was super excited to be selected

by Shaw. It was a great learning experience where every day

I learned something valuable. Everyone on the team was

so welcoming and contributed to make this experience a

success for me, and I want to thank Shaw for giving me

this opportunity.

I am happy to share that I returned to Shaw after my

placement was complete! Working with Candice McLeod,

Director, Architecture and Product Development, I am now a

part of the TNO team as a Project Coordinator. Thanks to the

education and experience I gained through CIWA and Shaw,

I’m proud to be a working woman again."

CIWA is a non-profit organization that addresses the needs

and concerns of immigrant and refugee women, youth,

children and families. We believe that diversity is important

at Shaw and through partnerships, like CIWA, we are able

to reflect the richness of all our communities and foster

innovation through diversity of thought and perspective.

Ish’s StoryEarlier this year Ish kumar arrived in Canada as a Permanent

Resident from India under the Federal Skilled Worker Plan.

Before moving to BC, he connected with DIVERSEcity’s

Canadian Immigrant Integration Program for a pre-departure

orientation about Canadian employment culture. Arriving with

an MBA degree and over 10 years of professional experience

in the Insurance and Finance sector, Ish landed a job working

for Shaw after only 25 days in Canada. He is now part of the

Technical Support Customer Care Team. Ish shared, “I feel

great to be a part of Shaw and am thankful to Jason Young

and Cindy kuhn for their support and cooperation. Shaw gave

me the real Canadian exposure a new immigrant needs and

made me comfortable in this new country.”

As part of Shaw’s efforts to enrich our culture, we are

proud to partner with DIVERSEcity and the more than

11,000 new Canadians they assist each year. In total, we’ve

contributed $25,000 to support their mission to promote

the independence of new Canadians and to build strong,

culturally diverse communities.

Most of us here in

Canada are familiar

with the term “First

World Problems.”

Complaints from

privileged people in

wealthy countries

is nothing new, and

I too am guilty of complaining about trivial inconveniences.

Well, that was until I teamed up with World Vision for

their “No Child For Sale” campaign in Guatemala. Here I

saw firsthand what REAL problems are, and they are not

lukewarm Starbucks or an unexpected flat tire on a luxury

SUV. Real problems are things like child labour, starvation,

and malnutrition, and they are all happening right now in

Central America.

But I saw much more than just doom and gloom in the hill

town villages surrounding Antigua. World Vision has been

operating in the region for longer than I’ve been alive, and it’s

amazing what they’ve accomplished. Through sponsorship

programs, World Vision has built schools and nutrition

centres and financed businesses that have transformed entire

communities. Their focus now is to finally put an end to child

labour, and it can’t happen soon enough.

During my week in Guatemala I met little ones barely

out of diapers, who have no other option but to harvest

coffee beans for nine hours a day, six days a week. It was

gut wrenching, but I’m glad I

saw it. This ugly truth not only

motivated me to sponsor a

child (say hi to Julio!), it also

reminded me to make an

effort to purchase only Fair

Trade, Rainforest Alliance and

UTZ Certified products. It may

not seem like much, but “Never doubt that a small group

of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;

indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

We were deeply saddened this past year by the passing of

our president, colleague and friend Paul Robertson, following

his heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. In tribute to Paul,

a group of Toronto Shaw Media employees and friends

formed a cycling team to participate in the Ride to Conquer

Cancer on June 13 and 14—an epic two day journey covering

over 220 kilometres from Toronto to Niagara Falls. It was an

amazing weekend for a great cause.

The Toronto team included Arthur Reinstein, Harry Patterson,

Michael French and Allison Wood from Shaw Media.

Through the generous support of Shaw Media’s program

distribution and production partners, co-workers, family

and friends, Team Shaw raised over $160,000 in support

of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and the

Alberta Cancer Foundation. Additionally, Team Shaw ranked

number one among all Information, Communication, Media

& Technology companies in the ride’s Corporate Industry

Challenge, besting the fundraising totals of Bell Media, TELUS

and Rogers combined!

Later this summer, a group of Shaw’s Alberta employees will

add to these achievements by participating in Calgary’s Ride

to Conquer Cancer on August 8 and 9. Stay tuned for the

grand total of our fundraising efforts!

Everybody loves a Shaw Bear hug

Staff Sergeant Gary Thompson, of Hamilton experienced the comfort of the Shaw Bear when his family was in a car accident.

“I was driving my wife and daughter to school when

a very large deer bolted out and struck the right side

of our car. The front passenger window exploded on

impact, sending shards of glass into my wife’s face.

My daughter became very upset when she saw her

mother’s face and the officer who responded grabbed

a Shaw Bear from his cruiser for her.”

“Having experienced the impact of the Shaw Bear,

I can’t tell you how much it meant to my wife and

me to see our daughter feel support and friendship with Sam, her Shaw Bear.

Our story is proof that the Shaw Bear program works for children in their time

of need, regardless of circumstance.”

Sue Scott experienced the calming effect of the Shaw Bear when her son was involved in a ski accident.

“In February, I received one of the scariest phone calls of my life when my husband

called to let me know our son had fallen off a chair lift. While riding up the chair with

his ski team, he slid off the chair and fell onto the hard packed ice nearly 25 feet

below. Luckily, help arrived immediately and by the time my husband met him, he had

a Shaw Bear. From that point on the Shaw Bear did not leave my son’s side for days.”

“In the midst of a scary situation, he was so glad to have the bear, it was something

soft and familiar that brought him comfort. I think the Shaw Bear was very important

to making this situation more comfortable for my son and I want to thank Shaw for

their contribution.”

Since 1989, Shaw has provided over 405,000 cuddly, soft Shaw Bears to children. Often seen at community events, Shaw Bears are especially meaningful in stressful and traumatic situations.

MississaugaOne bike, 30 seats, 20 minutes, two kilometres and one great

team working to create more survivors! That is exactly what

enthusiastic employees from our Mississauga office did on

May 27 in support of the Heart&Stroke Big Bike Ride. In total,

the Shaw Mississauga team raised $7,083 and thanks to the

Employee Giving program, its total donation was $9,983!

The team pedalled its way through the community to raise

awareness and celebrate their accomplishment. Kudos for displaying the Shaw Values while

supporting a great cause!

Caring about each other. At Shaw, the spirit of giving is a huge part of our

culture and we love hearing stories of employees

getting involved in their communities. You’ll be

amazed at all the ways our teams give their time

and talent to those in need.

Comox valleyThe team in the Comox Valley participated in

“Touch a Truck” an event that allows kids to get

up close to all kinds of commercial vehicles. Ona

Thorington and Doug Jagow handed out a number

of Shaw kids activity books and inspired a few future

Shaw employees. The event supported the local

Therapeutic Riding Society which helps children

and adults with physical and mental challenges.

CELEBRATING SuCCESSWE’RE RECOGNIZING OUR PEOPLE FOR WINNING INDUSTRY-LEADING AWARDS.

On April 15, Global BC’s news team was

honoured with the prestigious Rix Centre

Award for Community and Corporate

Citizenship from The Vancouver Board

of Trade. The dedication to community

engagement and charitable initiatives

has been unwavering and Global BC

exemplifies the best of Global News.

Congratulations to the Global BC team

on winning the Rix Centre Award!

Each year, the Canadian Cancer Society

holds the National Impact Awards

to recognize and appreciate the

corporations and community partners

that join the fight against cancer. The

teams at Shaw Media were awarded the

Corporate Achievement Award for our

leadership and financial contributions to

cancer initiatives. Throughout the year,

various teams get involved in a number

of initiatives including raising funds for

Daffodil Month and supporting the

Daffodil Ball through in-kind and

financial donations.

After hosting regional blood drives in

the Winnipeg office for a number of

years, the Winnipeg team wanted to

revitalize the clinic. By establishing a

committee to recruit blood donors

from both inside and outside of Shaw,

the team surpassed its original goal

raising 104 units of blood. To increase

participation, the local committee

hosted informational booths, booked

appointments and even managed to

swindle some cute Bot swag items as a

thank you to those who donated.

In March, Shaw Media,

along with our production

partners, brought home

23 awards from the third

annual Canadian Screen Awards. Among

those honoured at the event were

Dawna Friesen and Global National for

Best Newscast and Chris Gailus for the

Best Local News Anchor for Global BC

News Hour. HISTORY was commended

with four awards for the documentary

Tales from the Organ Trade and it’s

no surprise that Vikings won Best International Drama. Global’s Rookie Blue was named winner of the Golden

Screen Award for Best Drama Series —

an award given to the top-rated series.

Congratulations to Shaw Media on

creating great and compelling Canadian

content!

We’d like to congratulate this station-

wide effort that resulted in our

Community Service Award win for

our Christmas Wish Breakfast event,

benefiting the Lower Mainland

Christmas Bureau, which provides food

vouchers and toys to low income

families in Vancouver. This decades old

holiday tradition is a must for thousands

of people every holiday season and

Global BC is proud to be a huge part of

this toy-drive initiative. A very special

shout out to the entire morning news

team and everyone behind the scenes

who works so hard to make this great

event happen every year.

SHAW AND THE SCORE A TOuCH

This year’s management sessions had

a special guest…Canada’s very own

Grey Cup! As we announced our

historic partnership with the Canadian

Football League (CFL), we were joined

by CFL Commissioner Jeffrey Orridge,

the Grey Cup and two members of

the RCMP to help us share the exciting

news with employees and media.

This multi-year deal will make Shaw the official

telecommunications partner of the CFL and the first

presenting partner of the Grey Cup.

The CFL is a prestigious Canadian sports organization with a

long and storied history, and a national brand presence. “The

CFL is Canada’s premier sporting event, reaching millions

from coast-to-coast every week, and this partnership will

provide Shaw with a historic national platform that allows us

to connect with our customers and CFL fans in a meaningful

way,” said Brad Shaw, CEO.

Over the next few years, Shaw and the CFL will take fans

on a journey as teams vie for playoff positioning with the

launch of the Shaw Road to the Grey Cup content series.

The program will run in the second half of the CFL season

and culminate with the Grey Cup Championship game in

November.

We’ll also be working to build memorable experiences

for our customers, viewers, employees and CFL fans with

events like the weekly player achievement program and

Shaw Player Awards—an end of season celebration of the

top players, as voted on by the fans themselves.

Both Shaw and the CFL are proudly Canadian organizations

and we look forward to reaching Canadians and fans in new

and exciting ways. See you on the field.

Glenn Brian Racket(1962–2015)Glenn Brian Rackett, a long time Shaw employee, passed

away after a courageous battle with cancer. Glenn is

remembered as a free spirit who lived life at his own

pace. He always challenged the boundaries of fear—

from skydiving to public speaking in the ShawMasters

Toastmasters Club. Glen was an unpretentious man who

was just as comfortable speaking to a CEO as he was taking

a homeless man for lunch. He was also a family man, whose

daughters were most important to him. His coworkers

remember him as someone who could always make them

laugh, was friendly, sincere and considerate. Glenn shall

always be remembered.

Glenn Brian Racket

Allan Rowe(1957–2015)Allan Rowe spent much of his career with Global and he is

fondly remembered. Allan was a passionate advocate for

local news and his community, working at MITV and Global,

first as an assignment editor, then news anchor and finally,

news director. Allan stepped down in 2012 but continued to

serve the public by running for office in 2013, successfully

winning a seat in the Nova Scotia legislature.

Allan was a champion for his station and his team, a

respected community leader and a friend who could

connect with people in all segments of society.

We offer our condolences to his wife Yvonne, his

children and grandchilren, his friends and colleagues, and all

whose lives he touched in more than 30 years of

journalism and public service.

Roger was a pioneer at Shaw, and in his role as VP, Sales,

paved the way for many of the processes we use today.

An enthusiastic salesman, he used his energy and love of

storytelling to inspire his teams and win over customers. Roger

was a character with a big presence who loved to be part of

the action. Phil Murray, VP, Sales, describes Roger’s charisma:

“He had a crazy energy and if you were within a hundred feet

of him, you could feel it.”

Roger often shared stories of early days door-to-door selling

a five-channel Capital Cable subscription in Sherwood Park

or the launch of Pay TV or Full Cable Service on Shaw Cable

throughout western Canada. Whenever Roger told a story,

he found a way to leave everyone laughing. In fact, his stories

would still resonate today with many of us.

Dale Henderson, Director, Shaw TV Programming and VOD/

Interactive, was one of Roger’s protégés and shared his

memories of Roger. “When those of us who knew Roger talk

about our time with him, we will always recall his special and

unique turns of phrase, his constant use of nicknames, and

the facial expressions and mannerisms used to embellish an

already good story. He was a man with humour, style and a

personality that was uniquely his own.”

Roger Welsh helped pave the way for the success we enjoy

at Shaw today, and he will be remembered as a caring and

energetic leader who lived life to the fullest. “Ba Boof!” Roger,

we’ll miss you!

Roger Welsh (1941-2015)
