“My mother and maternal grandmother were both expert knitters, and I learnt the craft at around age 4 or 5. I taught myself to crochet at age 8. As a left-handed person, I carefully watched my right-handed grandmother as she worked and then adapted her technique to suit my own needs. I began by designing and making clothes for my doll. Later, I progressed to making sweaters etc for myself and close friends and family, and eventually for my own children. I have only recently begun to share my designs on a commercial basis.”- Valerie Lenton
