QUALIFICATIONS/DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Pilot in Command – Supervised crew of 4 or 5 and piloted H60 to conduct medical evacuation, search and rescue, and other Coast Guard missions. Made go/no go decisions on time sensitive, complex missions based on seasoned operational risk management savvy. Maintained high level of proficiency in day/night/NVG, all weather operations including approaches to hospital pads, elevated pads, unprepared areas, pinnacles, confined areas, hoisting operations, and low to no reference hovering. Leveraged avionics and communications suite fluency to efficiently manage mission systems and ensure mission success.

Military Flight Instructor – Attained highest pilot designation for Coast Guard pilots. From entire fleet of Coast Guard pilots, one of 14 pilots selected to serve on the H60 Standardization and Training Branch. Instructed initial pilot qualifications, unit and fleet pilot evaluations, simulator emergency procedure and instrument flight rule scenario sessions, aircraft system review, safety, and mission proficiency evaluations. Ensured standardization of recurrent training delivery and adherence to operational procedures and policy. Served as a unit flight instructor at Air Station Kodiak, Alaska. Managed training and evaluation for 21 pilots.

Chief Pilot – Chief Pilot of tactical air support element of Coast Guard’s Counter-Terrorism team. Detachment provided airlift, fast-rope capability, and aerial cover for tactical assault/boarding teams. Supervised 8 pilots and 8 flight mechanic/aerial gunners. Coordinated operations, deployments and training to maintain crew proficiency in airborne use of force, night/NVG operations, fast roping capability, formation flight and shipboard operations.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

U. S. Coast Guard Helicopter Pilot 1996 to present

• March 1996 – July 1997 – Student at Naval Flight Training. Earned “Wings of Gold” 25 July 1997.

• 1997-2001 – Assigned to CG Air Station (Air Sta) Cape Cod, MA. Primary mission offshore SAR and law enforcement. Conducted MEDEVAC cases from surrounding islands (Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, etc.) for further transport to Cape, Providence, RI, and Boston, MA hospitals. Routinely operated in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). Qualified to conduct shipboard takeoff and landings.

• 2001-2005 – Assigned to CG Air Sta Kodiak, AK. Primary mission offshore and inland SAR, and law enforcement. Operated in extreme weather and mountainous terrain from home base in Kodiak and from forward operating bases in Cold Bay, St. Paul and Cordova, Alaska. Incorporated flight surgeons and/or aviation medical specialists into aircrew during MEDEVACs. More often than not operated in IMC.

• 2005-2009 – Assigned to CG Aviation Training Center Mobile, AL. Served in the H60 Standardization/Training Branch as the assistant branch chief (2nd in charge of 14 officers and 4 enlisted personnel) and headed up the implementation of the training program to transition CG H60 aircrews from gauges to glass cockpit following avionics upgrade to Rockwell Collins common avionics architecture system. The upgrade constituted an 80% change in pilot to machine interface. Additionally instructed and evaluated pilots in full motion H60 flight simulator.

• 2009-2011 – Assigned to CG Air Sta Elizabeth City. Served as Maritime Security Response Team Aviation Detachment Operations Officer. Leader of tactical air support element of Coast Guard’s high end LE/Counter-terrorism team with airborne use of force and fast rope support. Supervised 8 pilots and 8 flight mechanic/aerial gunners. Deployed throughout continental U.S.

• 2011-present – assigned to the staff of Coast Guard Force Readiness Command in Norfolk, VA. Serve in the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures Division as the Integration Branch Chief. My primary duty is to lead groups of subject matter experts through the development of publications that instruct Coast Guard members how to conduct myriad operations and support functions. Managed revisions to Coast Guard’s Aviation Special Missions and Helicopter Insertion and Extraction procedural publications, and incorporated helicopter operations into myriad Coast Guard mission sets.
