She WalkS Beauty

I wake in the early hours dreaming of luscious colour. I long to be in the studio, dripping and pouring, liquid golds and luminescent pinks, creating a flower or the curve of a cheek; yet the boats gentle roll lulls me back to sleep.

Later, as we cross the water on our daily commute, my eyes blur with diamonds created by the sun, sparkling on the frothing waves that break and cascade in our wake. The damp low hanging mist glistens on the river, dancing rainbows as splashes catch the morning sun and the vibrant colours of discarded feathers strewn about the pontoon: feelings, colours and images captured and remembered, later to be rendered in paint.

My girl has left now. Once a babe in arms, this beautiful young woman is now strutting the path of her destiny; guitar slung over her shoulder, laptop in her bag. A path in a town

I once took, it seems only a moment ago. I painted her, captured all that she is and represents: young, beautiful, independent and self-assured - a romantic, a rebel, a contemporary young woman ready to enter a modern world. I taught her to walk bare foot on the grass, as my mother taught me, to admire the delicacy of a newly budded leaf, the subtle changes of colour as the seasons shift, music that causes one's whole body to throb with its melody and the gentle caress of a warm breeze upon bare skin, filled with the sweet aromas of the oncoming spring. I gave her my romanticism and she repaid me with her own.

From the tradition of the Romantics I took my cue: the words of Byron, the imagery of Friedrich and Goya, the gothic passions of the Bronte’s protagonists. I have begun my task; to proffer this modern day woman, to capture all she embodies within my own aesthetic form.

She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mellow’d to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies . One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!
