PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS Each month during 2018 I highlighted the efforts of the various teams of people who, on a voluntary basis, kept our Shed and our activities going. I called these teams of people Shed Heroes. A dictionary definition of the word HERO is “a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities”. I am pleased to be able to say that once again that this year is no different from last year. So many of our members are Shed Heroes, prepared to share their achievements, abilities and their life experiences - who they are, with the men at our Shed. Again I can say, if it were not for our Shed Heroes we would not have such a great place to meet and we would not have the range of activities that so many of you enjoy. I am encouraged by the mutual interaction and sharing of ideas and abilities I observe when I visit our Shed. To every one of our over 300 members, and in particular to our Shed Heroes, can I say thank you for what you bring to the Shed. We would not have the Shed community we have if it were not for you. Please, keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing you at the Shed. Peter Lindsay President

SPECIAL NOTICE FROM THE CARTOON DRAWING GROUP

“Hey, Shedders, do you have a children's story written by you for your grandchildren sitting in your top drawer waiting to be illustrated?

Why not contact the MGMS Cartooning group to see if they can help.

Perhaps it can be illustrated and made ready for publishing for the grandchildren to become a lasting family treasure?" Kevin Lindeberg ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

SHED SOCIAL MEETING REPORT

Date: 1 April 2019

Meeting opened at 11am with Bill Semple in the Chair

1. Apologies Mike Coles, John Elms, Steve Fluerty, Herb Sneyd, Terence Damons. Bill Whittaker,

Geoff O’Connor, Andrew Smith, William Robson, Gary Richie, Gary Earl, Stephen Kayser, Graeme

Cumner, Dave Tate, Alan Wood, John Raine, Gavin Taylor, Dan Mahon, Don McGuiness, Kevin O’Brien,

Neville Greenwood.

2. President’s Comments Peter Lindsay

The President spoke about the desire of the Shed to be involved in a Recycling Program. Richard

Kingsley had volunteered to develop the program along with other volunteers. The problem to be

considered was storage of items for recycling so the President urged that members initially be cautious in

the number of items they bring to the Shed for recycling.

Two short videos were played. One showed the visit of Ms Deb Frecklington and Mr Tim Mander (Leaders

of the Opposition in Queensland) visiting the Shed and the other was a song by Clint Eastwood “Don’t Let

the Old Man in”.

3. Secretary Robert Fraser

The Secretary highlighted three future events.

Shed Bus Trip on April 9 to the Port of Brisbane and Fire Service Facilities.

Annual Shed Church Service on June 9 at Hertford Street Baptist Church at 9 a.m.

8th Annual Gathering of Australian Men’s Shed Association in Adelaide in September 2019. Details

on the Notice Board.

4. Treasurer Graeme Cumner

Due to illness, Graeme Cumner was unable to attend so Assistant Treasurer Jim Pollock advised that we

continue to have a healthy financial situation.

5. Welfare Richard Moulton

Richard Moulton advised that there were 106 attendees at the Meeting including 3 visitors.

Richard highlighted some members who were being supported in their visits to hospital including Michael

McCaulay and Ces Lusted.

Recently the funeral of Bill Wittaker’s wife was attended by members of the Welfare Team.

Richard again reminded members to contact him if they were entering hospital.

6. Community Projects Bart McKnight

Bart advised that several community projects were under way including providing planter boxes for the

restaurant on Mount Gravatt and the P.A. Hospital. Mt Gravatt State School had contacted the Shed to

ask if we could make cages to put over air conditioners.

Bart is continuing to make arrangements for the transport of the Windmill from the Darling Downs to be

stored at the back of the Girl Guide’s Hut. Lloyd detailed a number of projects which had been undertaken

at the request of community members.

Lloyd was organising for two working bees to be held soon. One was to reorganise the Workshop and

another to reorganise the Container.

8. Building Jim Pollock

Jim specified a number of pieces of machinery that were now surplus to requirement. A list would soon be

put out and members could put in bids to purchase the items.

Bill Semple advised that the inaugural meeting of the Native Bees Group would be on Wednesday

17th April at the Shed at 9.00 a.m.

10. Office/Shirts Peter Tyley

Shirts were now being supplied by a new company which meant that the shirts would be cheaper and

obtained more quickly.

Harry Crosbie was substituting for Peter while he was on holidays.

11. Travel Group Kevin Schneidewin

Their recent camping trip to Yarraman and the South Burnett was very enjoyable and their next trip is

to the North Coast of New South Wales in early June. See Kevin Schneidewin for details.

12. Speaker

The Meeting was addressed by Carol Fazel who spoke on “How to generate

Happiness”

She had come from a background in working with cancer patients in the “Looking

Good, Feeling Well “Program.

She highlighted the relationship between the way people feel and how they look.

These are two factors that interrelate with each other. You feel better if you look

“good” and when you look “good” you tend to feel “good”.

When we meet new people we form an opinion of them using our senses. Research suggests that our

opinion is based on looking at the person (45%), listening to the person (35%), the Smell of the

person (13%) and the way the person speaks (7%).

So the way we look is important because it affects our mood and also in relating to others.

Carol highlighted various ways that we can care for our skin and various parts of our body as well as

release the build up of tension.

PLEASE NOTE: The next meeting is on the SECOND MONDAY IN MAY, 13th May 10.30 for 11.00 a.m.

The Speaker will be Tamara Bambrick who will be speaking on “Managing Prisons”.

A BIG WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS THIS MONTH

From Left to Right: Ian McKenzie, Terry Scott, Les Hancock, Colin Ferguson and Jeffrey Farrah

Yarraman 25/3 - 29/3 This was another successful event. 14 people attended. We explored the South

Burnett area, visited palm groves, old railway tunnel, wood museums, a winery, Bunya Mountains, and

sampled the famous Kingaroy peanuts from the nut van. It was a good caravan park, plenty of room,

weather was marginal but we were given the use of a conference room which was a welcome bonus.

We met members of the local Men’s Shed and gave them some advice as they were just starting up,

and invited them to visit us when they were ready and we will help them with systems and grants and

the like. Another visit to that area in the future would be a good idea, there is still a lot we did not see. Kevin Schneidewin

Ways to Wellness QCA is an alliance of faith groups coming together with charities, unions, community organisations and ethnic associations to work together for the common good.

It has been helping Queenslanders fight for a fairer and better life through the issues that matter to them. In the last 3 years it has had many wins in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, as well as state-wide. This alliance depends on the personal relations built across organisations in local areas. The core elements of the alliance are:

Non-partisan. Never to do for others what they can do for themselves; rather working in partnership solving problems. A commitment to listening to the excluded and the most vulnerable in our community.

At Alliance Meetings in Mt Gravatt two issues were identified for action; social isolation in the local area and difficulties faced by participants in the roll out of the NDIS. MGMS is not a member of the Alliance having decided not to pay the fees associated with membership but has a strong association through the relationship with Corrine McMillan.

The socialisation project has secured funding from the state government and Wendy Blackmon has been appointed as the new community link worker based at the Mt Gravatt Community Centre. Her role will be to engage with people who feel isolated socially and help them link up with a meaningful group with the aim of increasing their sense of belonging and wellbeing; that is where MGMS would participate as a relevant group. The project has not yet been launched with design and planning underway but it will be launched as the Ways to Wellness Program.

PORT OF BRISBANE VISIT BY MT GRAVATT MEN’S SHED 09/04/19

On Tuesday, members of the Men’s Shed and some wives departed firstly to visit the Colmslie Picnic Reserve on the Brisbane River. This is recommended for families as there is lots of space and a small beach. Then there followed a full day of “ supervised” exploration of the Port of Brisbane. A guide, Peter, ably escorted us, directing the bus driver, around the Port site.

Firstly, we gathered in the cafe which is open Monday to Friday to the public, to enjoy a commanding view of much of the Port. Various container terminals were pointed out and some of the cargoes, either being removed from ships or awaiting export onto the ships, were pointed out and explanations given. The bus, with its guide, then toured the site and closer views of the materials on the wharves were enjoyed. These included new cars, trucks, trains, turbine parts for the new wind farm, coal, grain (inbound due to our drought), woodchip, logs, LOTS of containers with possibly new washing machines or IKEA furniture or champagne or ???who knows what..????

The robotic cranes and mechanisms were observed in action.nearly as scary as driverless cars?? Future plans for expansion were outlined so we understood there is a long life of activity ahead for the Port of Brisbane which employs 3,000 people and works 24 hours a day. The Port receives 250,000 new cars each year. Following the tour, we enjoyed lunch at the RSL Club at Wynnum...quite delicious and efficiently served in pleasant surroundings. Continued

PORT OF BRISBANE VISIT BY MT GRAVATT MEN’S SHED 09/04/19 Continued A tour and demonstration at the Emergency Services Fire and Rescue Services at Wynnum was of great interest to the tour group.

The Acting Superintendent, Brenden Flynn, kindly and expertly led the group around the multi - facility site where training is delivered to various emergency services including paramedics and defence personnel - this is a very busy place - and we were treated to a demonstration of gas fires in quite dramatic but VERY safe fashion.

We also observed the paramedic students using the “jaws of life” to “rescue” an accident victim of a roll - over car crash. Following this tour, a brief visit also to the tug boat facility left us educated about tug boats and their range of very vitally important activities. The drive home took us by the sea at the Bayside at Wynnum, Manly and Lota. This was an excellent day trip and enjoyed by all who participated.

Thank you Len for organising the trip. Wendy Giacomentonio

COMMUNITY PROJECTS Mt Gravatt Men's Shed’s latest community project has been delivered to the Broadwater Road Indoor Bowls Club and will be put to good use by their members.

The club provided a fairly detailed sketch of a design that would be most suitable for their needs. Asbjorn Pettersson subsequently had a meeting with club members where they outlined possible difficulties with their design as the hoist was required to fit under a carpet storage rack in a storeroom where the doorway had a height restriction.

Taking these factors into consideration, Asbjorn came up with a design that was sturdy enough to take the weight of the carpet rolls, fitted the size restrictions, was stable so tipping would not be a problem and incorporated an electric winch so all Bowls members

could lift the carpet with slings to assist.

The project took a couple of weeks from the inception to sketches, gathering of materials, construction and finishing.

Hopefully a job to last the ages. Asbjorn Pettersson (0403 016 401)

WE HAVE A WINDMILL Following the results of our Tenth Anniversary Competition the winning symbol was for a windmill (submitted by Brad Gibson and Geoff Arnett.)

The only stipulation was the members were to build the new Men's Shed symbol!

With that in mind my thoughts were based around finding a constructed used windmill, making it easier and less time consuming to bring one back to its full glory.

Recently upon returning from a camping trip out West, I decided to pull over and walk down a driveway and ask if any one in the area knew of a second-hand windmill that was no longer wanted.

To cut a long funny story short, l located a farmer with a windmill that had seen better days and was no longer needed. There is a lot more to the story however that is for another report!

So l found one in Greenmount and on Wednesday 3rd April, eight Shedders headed out to collect the Shed’s new project, our Windmill.

Alf Dare was our truck driver, with the remainder of us following and enjoying a wonderful busy day in the country.

Upon arrival at the farm the owner’s wife, Julie, was already driving the crane and ready to load the truck with our new windmill. The men got to work cutting the windmill into truck size pieces and ensuring all bits were gathered from the surrounding grassed area.

The truck was loaded and load tied down by our professional truckie Alf. With our truck loaded, secured and photos taken, we exchanged hugs with Julie and set off for home, via the Gatton pie shop of course!

We pulled into our Shed at 2:30 pm and were greeted by Jim Dack sitting in the Show Grounds’ Pay Loader ready to unload our prize. The Windmill was unloaded without incident and into the back area of the Girl Guides complex.

Thank you Shedders for your help on the day...it wouldn't have happened without you.

Those who assisted on the day were: Alf Dare, Steve Ogle, Kevin Schneidewin, Richard Moulton, Allan Wallace, Noel Studders, Jim Dack. You are legends and made a terrific team. Thank you. Bart McKnight

The Guitar/Music group is going from strength tp strength and there has been a great amount of interest shown in the program and the lessons offered. So much in fact that a new 2019 guitar learner group of six shedders started on Tuesday 2nd April and runs from 8.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. every Tuesday morning in the recreation room.

Good efforts from all the musicians. What a talented group of people we have and it’s all sounding very good indeed. Terry Thomson

PS. The drum playing and the steady beat which is required to enhance the performances of the group is missing. WE NEED A DRUMMER. Is there any shed member who can play the drums, keep a steady beat and wishes to join the music group??? Please make contact with Terry Thomson or Basil Wood.

UNUSUAL PROJECT For the last five years Leo Zorzini has been wood turning spinning tops for four autism schools in Brisbane. When the children learn to spin the tops it is the first step for them to be able to hold a pencil.

He also makes puzzles for them to try to solve. These puzzles have five different pieces of twisted stainless steel wire in each. Leo had to make 30 of them so he asked Barry White and Bert Dean to make the wooden bases. Barry now being a little twisted himself decided to make some twisted wire and mount it on a wood base to spin it. Also some round discs with a hole in them for a screw and a concrete plastic plug to see if the kids could work them by spinning . Being flat they do not fall over.

The school teachers liked them and now have asked Leo if the Men’s Shed could make another 40 of each. Barry may go around the twist but agrees with Leo that this is something worth doing if it can help kids in some way. Barry White

Photo 1: Roger Carter putting the finishing touches to the new table numbers for the social meeting. He promises they will be ready for Christmas...no year specified. Once these ones are in use, the small ones that have been used to date will be used to pull out of the hat to determine the next table for lunch.

Photo 2: Neville Bishop, Patrick Hayley, Don Ford and Dennis Bauer with the sand therapy trays that were made for a psychology centre called Little Window, in Stones Corner. The specification was that they were to be blue inside and luckily one of the recent donations from Bunnings happened to be paint in a fine shade of blue. Lloyd Akeroyd
