Welcome2013 began in terrific style for Sheffield Theatres, and we’re delighted to be announcing our summer season to you as Regional Theatre of The Year!

This season, we stage the world première of This Is My Family, a brand new musical comedy written specially for us by Tim Firth (the author of Calendar Girls) and a new version of The History Boys, which will star Olivier award-winning actor Matthew Kelly in the role of Hector.

In the Lyceum Theatre, we have a fantastic line-up of some of the best productions currently on tour in the UK including The Old Vic’s production of Michael Frayn’s backstage comedy, Noises Off; the critically-acclaimed Sleeping Beauty by Matthew Bourne and for family audiences, Birmingham Stage Company’s James and The Giant Peach will delight all ages. Following the huge success of The Full Monty, we’re also thrilled to announce that in September, we will produce Kay Mellor’s glorious comedy A Passionate Woman.

We’re looking forward to sharing our work with you this season and hope that you will join us for the wide variety of productions on our stages. We also continue our programme of post-show talkbacks and play readings, offering you further opportunities to immerse yourself in the work we do.

In January, we were delighted to be awarded the prestigious Stage 100 Regional Theatre of the Year Award.

The award was the culmination of an outstanding year for us. We’re proud to be recognised for the contribution that we make to the creative life of our city, the region and on a national scale. During 2012 we staged a major season celebrating the work of Michael Frayn, the production of Democracy later transferring to the Old Vic and Aidan McArdle being awarded a Theatre UK Award for Best Supporting Performance. We produced the first major production of A Taste of Honey since author Shelagh Delaney’s death; collaborated with the Bush Theatre on the world première of DC Moore’s Straight (which also transferred to the Bush Theatre following its run in Sheffield) and ended the year with the hugely successful production of My Fair Lady.

This year, we’re looking forward to enjoying more bold, exciting work with our audiences across all three of our stages.

‘Sheffield Theatres continues to produce exemplary shows, serving a local and national audience that greatly values its work’ The Stage

Yes, Prime MinisterWith Michael Fenton-Stevens, Michael Matus, Indra Ové and Crispin Redman

Mon 29 April – Sat 4 May

Following two sell-out West End seasons, the original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, have reunited for this anniversary production of Yes, Prime Minister. Last seen at the Lyceum Theatre in 2011, Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back in this hilarious play.

In a world of spin, BlackBerrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?

Propeller in association with The Touring Partnership

The Taming of the ShrewBy William Shakespeare

Wed 8 – Sat 11 May

‘This isn’t just Shakespeare – this is rock and roll’ Daily Express

Two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of the beautiful Bianca, whilst gold-digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate, sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. This brash, brutal and darkly comic story pulls no punches.

One thing is certain – nobody does Shakespeare like Propeller.

The Old Vic presents

Noises OffWith David Bark-Jones, Maureen Beattie, Simon Bubb, Danielle Flett, Geoffrey Freshwater, Chris Larkin, Neil Pearson, Thomasin Rand and Sasha Waddell

Mon 13 – Sat 18 May

The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to the Lyceum Theatre following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell out run in London.

Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s multi-award-winning backstage farce serves up a riotous double bill - a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through rehearsals in Weston-super-Mare, to a shambolic Wednesday matinee in Ashton-under-Lyne and a final disastrous performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

‘I’m a Jew. I’m small. I’m homosexual. And I live in Sheffield. I’m f**ked’

A levels may be over, but for one set of unruly pupils, their education is far from finished.

Back in lessons to train for entrance exams, the boys find themselves caught between two opposing styles of teaching. Eccentric Hector leads with a flamboyance that brings everything to life, while cynical Irwin has been brought in by the Head to provide a ruthless route to Oxbridge. But with love, sex and university on their minds, the question is, will any of them make the grade?

The History Boys by Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s favourite comedies, full of stunning one-liners and teenage anxieties.

Bill Kenwright presents the Live Theatre Newcastle and National Theatre co-production of

The Pitmen Painters

Mon 3 – Sat 8 June

Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award-winning play The Pitmen Painters.

Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play.

In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who did extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

Comedy Theatre Company presents

Rising Damp

Mon 24 – Sat 29 June

An unnamed northern university town is home to Rupert Rigsby, landlord of arguably the seediest, most run-down boarding house that England has to offer. His unlucky tenants include Ruth Jones, an administrator at the university; Alan, a medical student; and Philip, who is studying town and country planning. Between them, Alan and Philip are the focus and foil of the majority of Rigsby’s many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is hopelessly and pathetically in love.

ITV’s top comedy of all time, Rising Damp, comes to the stage in a brand-new production from the Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the stage versions of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies and BBC TV’s Birds Of A Feather.
