Welcome2013 began in terrific style for Sheffield Theatres, and we’re delighted to be announcing our summer season to you as Regional Theatre of The Year!

This season, we stage the world première of This Is My Family, a brand new musical comedy written specially for us by Tim Firth (the author of Calendar Girls) and a new version of The History Boys, which will star Olivier award-winning actor Matthew Kelly in the role of Hector.

In the Lyceum Theatre, we have a fantastic line-up of some of the best productions currently on tour in the UK including The Old Vic’s production of Michael Frayn’s backstage comedy, Noises Off; the critically-acclaimed Sleeping Beauty by Matthew Bourne and for family audiences, Birmingham Stage Company’s James and The Giant Peach will delight all ages. Following the huge success of The Full Monty, we’re also thrilled to announce that in September, we will produce Kay Mellor’s glorious comedy A Passionate Woman.

We’re looking forward to sharing our work with you this season and hope that you will join us for the wide variety of productions on our stages. We also continue our programme of post-show talkbacks and play readings, offering you further opportunities to immerse yourself in the work we do.

In January, we were delighted to be awarded the prestigious Stage 100 Regional Theatre of the Year Award.

The award was the culmination of an outstanding year for us. We’re proud to be recognised for the contribution that we make to the creative life of our city, the region and on a national scale. During 2012 we staged a major season celebrating the work of Michael Frayn, the production of Democracy later transferring to the Old Vic and Aidan McArdle being awarded a Theatre UK Award for Best Supporting Performance. We produced the first major production of A Taste of Honey since author Shelagh Delaney’s death; collaborated with the Bush Theatre on the world première of DC Moore’s Straight (which also transferred to the Bush Theatre following its run in Sheffield) and ended the year with the hugely successful production of My Fair Lady.

This year, we’re looking forward to enjoying more bold, exciting work with our audiences across all three of our stages.

In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who did extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

Music In The Round May Festival 2013 Turtle Soup: The Curious Story of Music in Britain

Join Music in the Round and Ensemble 360 for a joyous celebration of great British music-making.

Festival highlights include a live chamber music and film event at the Showroom Cinema, celebrating the centenaries of Sheffield’s discovery of stainless steel and the birth of Benjamin Britten; a family-friendly day of activities at Kelham Island Industrial Museum; an evening of music influenced by India and east/west musical collaborations; an Alice in Wonderland inspired family concert of live music, ‘curiouser and curiouser’ rhymes and nonsense; and our own unique take on the Last Night of the Proms.

Take the StageApril – JuneA creative team from Sheffield Theatres will support local primary and secondary schools (Year 5 to Year 12) to rehearse and perform specially-chosen plays for the Crucible stage. Schools will be supported by professionals at Sheffield Theatres in direction, performance skill development and production elements. The rehearsal process will start from April and continue through to the performance in June. Throughout the project we will also be working with a professional theatre designer who will transform our stage for this one-off production by local young people.

Voices in the SquareMon 22 Apr – Fri 10 MayTeacher’s workshop Mon 11 Mar Primary Schools bring Tudor Square and Sheffield’s Theatre Land to life with a musical extravaganza created by young people working with a musical composer and director. Box Office opening hoursMon – Sat 10.00am to 8.00pm On the first Tuesday of every month the Box Office opens at 11.00am due to staff training.

On non–performance days the Box Office closes at 6.00pm. On Sundays and Bank Holidays the Box Office opens one hour before the show.
