Endless opportunities

for our young men and

women as they grow up

experiencing the joy of

Brahman cattle.

LEADERSHIP ... The Florida Junior Brahman Association is an organization that provides an opportunity for youth to gain experience in owning, showing and breeding Brahman cattle.

MORE THAN SHOWING ... The FJBA offers so much more than just showing Brahmans. They provide opportunities for the youth to demonstrate their skills in the following categories:• Herdsmanship • Sponsorship • Quiz Bowl • Public Speaking• Educational Posters • Photography • Queen & Princess • Leadership Development

SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS ... every year the young juniors will receive scholarships and awardsbased on their leadership skills, citizenship, scholastic merit, financial need and their partic-ipation in agriculture.

BRED & OWNED ... The FJBA juniors are rewarded for their hard work in cattle production byexhibiting their raised product in a show competition.

CATTLE SHOW ... Each cattle show has both a bull and female division. Cattle are exhibited in theirrespective divisions based upon the animal’s age. This helps the juniors to realize the valueand importance of the conformation, structural correctness, docility and performance of theirproduct.

About a year and a half

There are many great things about showing Brahmans, meeting new people, hanging outwith friends and getting to do what you love and learning something new every time!

There are two people in the Brahman breed I look-up every much. Their names are KelvinMoreno and Tammie Watts. They have taught me so much and I wouldn’t be where I amtoday in the Brahman breed if it weren’t for them!

My favorite thing about shows would be getting to be in the show ring!

A good friend of mine got me started in showing cattle, also of course my parents, andKelvin Moreno has taught me a lot in the last year as well! I wouldn’t be the showman I amtoday without all the support.

Houston is my favorite show. It might be a lot of work but it is worth it!

Mostly black and sometimes red.

Believe it or not, last year I would have told you I would never pick Brahmans over my clubcalves. But I have come to realize that Brahmans are much better in many ways. I pickBrahmans because of their way of getting attached to a person.

Would have to be their ears, of course!

Yes, I always will.

Nineteen exhibitors and 16 families hauled the 2,000 mile journey to and from the much anticipatedAmerican Junior Brahman Association (AJBA) 35th Annual “All-American” National Junior Show heldin West Monroe, Louisiana on June 23-28, 2014. Along with Alabama, Arkansas, California,Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas, Florida made its presence known with its largestdelegation to date. With more than 250 juniors in attendance, over 550 owned and bred andowned Brahman cattle, along with the Golden Certified and Certified F-1 females were exhibited.Florida proudly brought home many achievements and awards. However, the greatest achieve-ment was the unity of the group during the activities and milestones achieved.

Bred and Owned entries were evaluated by Chad Breeding from Miami, TX. Bethalan Biship andReed Fussell walked away with the following:

GRAY BULL BRED & OWNED SHOW- Class 15 – Winner & Junior Champion ... IS MR SNOWFLAKE III ... shown by Bethalan Bishop- Class 24 – Winner and Reserve Senior Champion ... RAF 512 (P) ... shown by Reed Fussell

In addition to showing cattle, juniors could participate in a wide variety of leadership contests. Florida definitely staked a claim in each category. Rounding out the week was the Annual Awards Banquet where many juniors were recognized for their hard workthroughout the year and week. Over $20,000 in scholarships was presented to graduates. The Florida winners are as follows:

At the close of the banquet, Moreno Ranches graciously donated $6,500 back to the AJBA from their All-American Summer Sale that was held in conjunction with the show. A huge thank you goes out to the Moreno family for their continued support.

Lanier Brahmans, Moreno Ranches, and RW Ranch were just a few of the corporate sponsors of the All-American. The Lanier, Moreno and White families attended the shows and activities with full support of the Florida delegation.

After a long week of ‘toad strangling’ rain, hot weather, crawfish boil, miniature golf, Duck Commander (hoping to meet Si!), all you can eat catfish, and spending quality time with family and friends, Florida left its mark on the 35th Annual “All-American” National Junior Show. Looking forward, be sure to mark your calendar as the FJBA heads to the 36th Annual “All-American” June 14-21, 2015 in Lufkin, Texas.

The overall goal of any cow-calf operation is to produce one live calf per cow eachyear. However, one could add to this goal to produce a high quality, high perform-ance, and heavy weaning calf per cow each year. In order to achieve this goal, cow-calf producers should take advantage of the reproductive technologies that are avail-able today. Artificial insemination (AI) has been around for centuries, and is the eas-iest, fastest, and cheapest strategy to improve the genetic potential of your herd.Nonetheless, only 8% of the cows in the United States are artificially inseminatedevery year. Implementing an AI program requires the detection of estrus, or heatdetection, which can be a laborious and time consuming activity. Heat detection ofBos indicus females is even more complicated, since these animals have a shorterduration of estrus and a higher occurrence of estrus during the night, when com-pared to Bos taurus females.

In the last decades the advent of estrous synchronization (ES) allowed the devel-opment of fixed-timed AI (TAI) protocols, where all females can be exposed to AIwithout the need of heat detection; concentrating labor, allowing better allocation oftime and resources within the ranch. Generally, TAI protocols will yield pregnancyrates of 50% to one insemination. In a recent study performed by our research groupfrom the North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC) at six differentproducer locations using the same TAI protocol the pregnancy rates ranged from44.4% to 65.8%. The primary factor, that appeared to have the largest impact onsuccess, was whether the herd had been previously exposed to TAI or not. The threeherds that had previously been exposed to TAI for eight or more years had pregnan-cy rates of 56.9% to 65.8%, whereas those herds that had not previously beenexposed to TAI had pregnancy rates ranging from 44.4% to 50.4%. Therefore, obtaining pregnancy rates deemed good or acceptable may require a long-term com-mitment rather than expecting excellent results from the start.

Typically, Bos taurus females have higher synchronization rates than Bos indicus, which will result in higher pregnancy rates, primarily due to physiological differencesbetween these two breed types. However, TAI protocols specifically designed for Bosindicus females have been recently developed with significant improvements in preg-nancy rates. A list of TAI protocols proven to be effective, together with more infor-mation on reproductive management of beef cattle, can be found at the BeefReproduction Task Force website (www.beefrepro.unl.edu). Without a doubt, preg-

nancy rates are an important measurement of success of TAI protocols; however, thebenefits of implementing ES go beyond simply getting more cows pregnant by AI.Estrous synchronization has the power to induce cyclicity in anestrus females. Thisis particularly important in Bos indicus females, which reach puberty later and havea longer period of postpartum anestrus than Bos taurus females.

Another important benefit of implementing ES is the effects of such programs onwhen the females get pregnant and their subsequent calving distribution. Femalesthat are exposed to ES will get pregnant earlier, and, consequently, will calve earliercompared to females exposed to natural service (NS). In order to assess the economicimpacts of ES compared to NS systems in commercial cow-calf operations, ourgroup conducted a partial budget analysis of both systems. In producer operations, suckled beef cows were assigned randomly within each location to 1 of 2 treatmentgroups: 1) cows were exposed to TAI; or 2) cows were exposed to NS without ES.Within each herd, cows from both treatments were maintained together in similarpastures and were exposed to bulls 12 h after the last cow in the TAI treatment wasinseminated. Overall, the percentage of cows exposed to treatments that subse-quently weaned a calf was greater for TAI (84%) than NS (78%) cows. In addition, cows in the TAI treatment calved earlier than cows in the NS treatment. Even moreimportantly, weaning weights were greater for cows in the TAI treatment (425.5 lbs)than those cows in the NS treatment (387.0 lbs). Overall, increased returns plusdecreased costs ($82.32), minus decreased returns plus increased costs ($33.18)resulted in a $49.14 advantage per exposed cow in the TAI treatment compared tothe NS treatment.

Using the same economic model, we developed a smartphone application. TheAICowculator is available for download for IPhone/IPad and Android systems freeof charge, as well as an Excel-based version of the AICowculator which can be down-loaded at the NFREC web page (www.nfrec.ifas.ufl.edu/programs/AICowculator.shtml). Using the AICowculator, producers can input their own data(number of cows, number of bulls, weaning weights, etc.) and their production costto determine if implementing an ES and TAI program would be economically viableto their operation. What about in your operation? Download the AICowculator, input your data and see whether ES and AI is something for you to consider.
