RICHARD D. SHELBY Richard Shelby is a senior political strategist deeply entrenched in public affairs advocacy and grass roots campaigns on national issues. Most recently, he was Executive Vice President for Public Affairs for the American Gas Association where he was responsible for advocacy outreach, communications and public relations with a major focus on Capitol Hill and the Executive branch of government. Shelby has been active in state and national political campaigns, and served as one of Ronald Reagan’s Regional Political Directors, covering nine states. He then went on to serve in the Reagan White House, and in 1982 was National Campaign Director for the Republican National Committee. He was also the Interim Convention Manager of the 1984 Republican National Convention. Past political clients with whom Shelby has worked include U.S. Senator Don Nickles, U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell, U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, Congressman Jim McCrery, Congressman Ed Whitfield, Congressman Bob Barr, Congressman Bill Emerson, Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson and Congressman Jack Buechner. His international experience includes providing political counsel to democratic parties and candidates in Russia, Ukraine and Albania. In the area of grassroots activity and development, Shelby has played key roles in many battles including the utility industry fight against clean air legislation, the health insurance industry battle against the Clinton Health Care initiative and in the effort at both the state and federal levels in support of official language legislation.
