On April 30, 2014, SPLC employees from the Commercial and Finance groups volunteered their time and talents to a Shell Day of Caring at DePelchin Children’s Center in Houston, Texas. While the projects completed that day were small in comparison to all of the services and activities DePelchin provides for Houston area children, these projects will contribute to the overall environment and experience that children have there. The DePelchin campus is a very relaxed and comfortable environment, and the various projects SPLC did will add to that experience. In their Donation Station, volunteers painted more than a dozen doors and cabinets a vivid orange color to help brighten up an area that is very busy during the Christmas donation season. Everything was a monotone off white color, so the orange doors not only fit in the DePelchin color theme, but also really bring some energy to the room. Outdoors, 40 shrubs were planted and mulched along the streets, which will help screen other buildings and homes that are not part of the campus. Volunteers also refinished two large outdoor wood decks that are used by the staff and older kids. These decks provide a great place to eat lunch or to enjoy some quiet time in the park like setting of DePelchin. There was a lot of hard work, especially for those digging holes and planting the shrubs, but everyone was happy to participate and help make a difference for the kids. The weather was great, all projects were completed and it was a rewarding experience. The staff at DePelchin was amazed at how much volunteers accomplished in such a short amount of time and very appreciative of all the hard work. A special thank you to Catherine Glaze, Aubrey Swanson, Tiffany Ho, Veronica Rincon and Vince Castro for helping keep our volunteers fed and hydrated.

“Aside from Ken Edmonds two-hour marathon trip for mulch, it was a wonderful experience working along-side fellow colleagues to help such a wonderful organization!” ~ Andy Stilly

“At first I wasn’t so sure about the bright orange paint, but once all the doors and cabinets were done it looked great! The craft room now has much more character, which should provide a comfortable place for the kids to be able to express themselves creatively. All in all, I was very impressed by the facilities and the support that DePelchin provides.” ~ Wade Clerkin

On April 26, 2014, SPLC participated in the Oil Field Crawfish Boil-off at Fort Jackson in Buras, LA. This is a charitable event sponsored by the Buras Volunteer Fire Department. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for department improvement projects, the purchase of small equipment items, in-house training, fire prevention awareness and more. It is fun event and everyone enjoyed the good-natured competition in the hopes of being awarded as the best boiler of crawfish! This year, SPLC took home that honor by winning First Place!

Bakersfield Bomb Squad Demo Franklin, LA Police Department Donation

8

The Bakersfield Tank Farm had a security drill and training in April, presented by the Kern County Bomb Squad. The team was able to see the bomb robot and various homemade bombs. Most importantly, it was discussed what to do if you get a bomb threat or find a suspicious object.

A great catch by a Seattle operator identifies a potential problem at more than one facility. Greg Goodman, a 23-year veteran operator at the Seattle terminal, noticed a large intermittent discrepancy between the recently installed electronic tank gauge system and the mechanical gauge on the tank during a pipeline receipt. This near miss prompted the engineer on the project to go back to the manufacture and discuss potential causes for the error. Greg is always looking for potential process safety gaps and has received the “PROCESS SAFETY CHAMPION” award for his near miss. Pictured: Greg with his award and team members during a safety meeting.

Congratulations to Greg on a job well done!

Matthew Pregeant, Right of Way Technician, recently met with the Franklin, LA police department for a follow up on the donation that was given to them by SPLC. The donation money was used to supply the Police patrol units with built in laptops. This allows them to complete all reports on site, which prevents them from having to drive back to the station. They expressed much gratitude for the donation that was given to them.

The theme of the 2014 I&M Manual Training was “Stepping it up in 2014,” in relation to the multitude of changes to the manual over the past year. These manuals enable us to meet the Department of Transportation regulations and our own internal Shell requirements. Members of the Reliability and Integrity group from the Downtown Houston Engineering office recently completed six Training sessions in the West Region and Gulf of Mexico. The group trained over 150 engineers, technicians, electricians, etc. The focus of the one day long sessions was to highlight the updates to the manuals, introduce the Community of Practice teams for the manuals and role out the new Temporary Piping Guide among other things. The training also offered a game of competitive “I&M Manual Football” to keep it interesting.

The training team and the Operations stakeholders did an excellent job of coordinating staff across the regions and completing this task. Staff was very supportive of having the training program back in place. Unlike most training road shows, there was a high level of interest and engagement by everyone.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS: Karen McCray & Greg Smith (Sponsors), Jeff Whitworth (Visionary), Scott Olson, Brent Byrd, Jay Murphy and Tim Johnson (Presenters), Andrew Rivera (Presenter in Gibson).

During travel to all the different training sessions, the team tried to implement the concept of “BE SAFE & HAVE FUN.” Here are some of the highlights:

“Be Safe”=Tying your shoe with no thumbs can be difficult =Guys from Houston do not know when they are in an active earthquake=“Crazed individual on flight from LAX to IAH”

“Have Fun”=Visited the “busiest” Starbucks in the U.S., or so we thought…=Met Michael Douglas in the airport=The referee had to toss a few players from the “I&M Manual Football Challenge”

Getting to Know...Lisa Yan

10

Lisa Yan is a Project Manager/Engineer. She has been with Shell since Nov. 4, 2002. Lisa was with Shell Global Solution for the first three years and transitioned to Shell Pipeline for the last nine years. Before joining Shell, she worked as a Pipeline Engineer with multiple engineering consulting companies for five years. Lisa and her husband, Yang Si, have two children: daughter Cissy Si, and son Kevin Si. Yang is an Information Technology engineer at GE. Cissy graduated this May from Baylor College of Medicine and matched to Case Western’s Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency located in Cleveland, Ohio. Kevin is an incoming junior at Dulles High School in Fall 2014.

Where did you grow up? I was born in a small town in Sichuan Province in the Southwestern region of China. My home town is geographically small but with a population of tens of thousands. A branch of Yangtze River flows across the town. I had a very happy childhood while growing up with one younger sister and two older brothers. Hobbies: I enjoy working out when I have time, especially yoga. Personal accomplishments: I am the proud mother and a close friend of two young adults. I support them with passion and help them achieve their goals.

What is your favorite memory at Shell? There are too numerous to mention. The ones that stand out include taking on the project management role in construction and repairing work. I truly like working with our pipeline group where we treat each other like family by supporting and nurturing each other to achieve our respective job safety, quality and efficiency goals.

What is your dream job? When I was young, I had many dreams, such as becoming a dancer, medical doctor, but never thought of becoming an engineer. As it turns out, being an engineer is my favorite and dream job because I feel I enjoy solving problems and creating solutions that can positively impact one’s daily lives.

What is something that most people don’t know about you? I worked in the countryside as a farmhand for two years after high school at a time in China when there was no opportunity to enter college. Where I worked, it was a very rural setting, and I had no access to electricity. I consider it a kind of survival training and learned what hard work really entailed through it.

What are your plans for the future? I love what I am doing now, and I consider my work with Shell as the last stop of my professional career. After I retire, I plan to travel around the world with my husband. I have an interest in artwork and plan on taking art classes as well.
