Shelley College Weekly E-Bulletin for Parents Friday, 21 st October 2016 Dear Parents Thank-you for your support during this busy half-term. Behaviour around the school has been excellent and there is a purposeful atmosphere in lessons. I think our students can look forward to the half-term break with a sense of satisfaction, having worked really well over the lsat few weeks. The break is also, of course, a good opportunity to revise before the trial exams in December (Year 11)! Congratulations to the Year 11 Prefects, who received their badges this week. I know they will be outstanding leaders for their year grop and great ambassadors for all our students. My thanks to Mr Greg Wadsworth for promoting the opportunities for students to have their say in how the school is led and managed. Elsewhere in the bulletin, there are so many achievements it is difficult to pick any highlights. However, particularly well done to the students achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Silver expeditions. It is a great award and takes lots of hard work. Next term will probably be even busier. If you had a son or daughter in Year 11 last year, our presentation evening is Wednesday, 9 th November; our school production “Billy Elliot” is on Thursday, 17 th and Friday, 18 th November; and our sixth form open evening will be on 24 th November. I look forward to seeing many of you on these evenings and others later in the half- term. Enjoy the break. John McNally Principal

Dear Parents

Thank-you for your support during this busy half-term. Behaviour around the school has been

excellent and there is a purposeful atmosphere in lessons. I think our students can look forward to

the half-term break with a sense of satisfaction, having worked really well over the lsat few weeks.

The break is also, of course, a good opportunity to revise before the trial exams in December

(Year 11)!

Congratulations to the Year 11 Prefects, who received their badges this week. I know they will be

outstanding leaders for their year grop and great ambassadors for all our students. My thanks to

Mr Greg Wadsworth for promoting the opportunities for students to have their say in how the

school is led and managed.

Elsewhere in the bulletin, there are so many achievements it is difficult to pick any highlights.

However, particularly well done to the students achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Silver

expeditions. It is a great award and takes lots of hard work.

Next term will probably be even busier. If you had a son or daughter in Year 11 last year, our

presentation evening is Wednesday, 9th November; our school production “Billy Elliot” is on

Thursday, 17th and Friday, 18th November; and our sixth form open evening will be on 24th

November. I look forward to seeing many of you on these evenings and others later in the half-

term.

Enjoy the break.

the challenge and I have received many positive reports from DofE staff and volunteer assessors. All

students were a credit to themselves, their parents and certainly true ambassadors for Shelley College.

I am very proud of them all. Well Done!!

Any student in Years 11-13 who has not yet completed their DofE Award, needs to submit all evidence and

assessors reports before the end of October, in order to receive their award at the annual Presentation

ceremony at Huddersfield Town Hall in January. If anyone needs help to do this, please either email me, or

pop along to the weekly support session, Thursday 12.15 - 12.45 in the Maths area outside C25a/26a.

Thank you.

KIRKLEES YOUTH SERVICES

Get involved and have your say about changes to Kirklees Youth Service Over the last eighteen months, Kirklees Council has been looking at new ways of providing support to young people across the region. The current proposal is to replace all the existing services, including the DofE, with four early intervention hubs. This will mean that the council will no longer directly deliver any open access youth activities, for example youth clubs, but will support community groups and other agencies to do so instead. As a result, many provisions for young people may be forced to close or reduce their services and families may have to travel further for help and support. It is proposed that Area 4 (Kirklees rural), covering Colne and Holme Valleys, Denby Dale and Kirkburton, has a single central hub located in either Slaithwaite or Holmfirth to cover this area, plus mobile and outreach delivery sites. With reference to the DofE, at present the council pays for the licence to DofE in Kirklees and the DofE team to co-ordinate the award with over 63 groups. There are currently 6492 young people participating in Kirklees (over 150 of these are Shelley students), supported by 544 volunteers. It would be devastating to lose such a valuable provision for so many mainstream and additional needs students. The DofE provides the opportunity for many young people to try new activities; learn new skills; develop their self-confidence, self-motivation, communication and decision-making skills and to learn how to be a member of a team. All of these attributes are valuable when entering University or the workplace. Only 216 people responded to the first engagement earlier this year. DofE would like to ensure that this time Kirklees is made fully aware of the effect their proposals will have on the young people themselves – remember this is only one of the many youth services that Kirklees proposes to cut. They are therefore asking DofE groups and volunteers to pass this information on to as many people as possible. As part of the school policy to develop and uphold British Values, we will be asking students to make their voices heard after half-term. If you would like to have your say about the future of the Youth Service in Kirklees, please complete the on-line survey at www.kirkleestalk.org or email [email protected] Copies of the questionnaire are also available by contacting 0800 980 9030. There are also meetings planned with the Directors and decision makers, should you wish to find out more.

Year 9 and 10 students learn about the risks of child exploitation On Monday, production company AlterEgo Creative Solutions performed their acclaimed short play, Chelsea’s Choice to Year 9 and 10 students. Chelsea’s Choice is performed by four actors and tells the story of three students who find the diary of a girl, 15-year-old Chelsea, who becomes isolated from her family and friends and is groomed by a predatory older man. They act out the true story of how Chelsea starts chatting to men online after her boyfriend refuses to sleep with her. She meets Gary – in his mid to late 20s – and they begin a sexual relationship that exploits her anger at her friends and parents. The production ends with him taking complete control of her life, plying her with drugs and alcohol and passing her around men for sex. In a discussion with their teacher, they attempt to understand what happened to Chelsea and how it could have been prevented. The performance made students aware of the dangers of online grooming and of the impact that sexual exploitation can have on a young person's life. It also gave students some skills and knowledge to be able to protect themselves from this form of abuse.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Year 11 update- Students in Home Economics: Food are now planning, preparing and making a wide range of dishes as part of the controlled assessment. Dishes made so far include victoria sponge cake, enchiliadas, shepherd's pie and homemade chicken nuggets. As part of the controlled assessment students independently select their own recipes to meet the needs of different clients. The meal choices can be aimed at the elderly, school children or pregnant women. We are very impressed with the quality of their practical work so far!

Year 11 Textiles have been finishing off their costume and furnishing designs ready to start making the final products. We have experimented with a range of decorative techniques during lessons including batik, applique and free machine embroidery. Students create a toile or paper model of their chosen design before making it in their final fabrics. We are aiming to have these products completed by Christmas, and additional afterschool support sessions are running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Year 13 Graphics have also been developing ideas for their final products. As you can see they sketch out

their ideas using different angles, including measurements and detailed information about the materials to

be used. The next stage will be to create prototypes of these ideas and to test them with their clients.

English Theatre Trip - 13 October 2016 Last Thursday, members of the English Department and the Year 13 literature students had a fantastic trip to the Exchange Theatre in Manchester to see Tennessee Williams’ 1947 Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece, ‘A Street Car Named Desire’. Acclaimed actress, Maxine Peake, stunned the audience with her fantastic portrayal of iconic female protagonist Blanche DuBoise in this sell out production. Described as an ‘earthquake of a play’, we were taken on a roller-coaster ride of what it is to be human and it was breath taking! From the intriguing set design to the atmospheric music, this production was pure genius and both staff and students enjoyed it immensely. We are looking forward to our next theatrical event to see ‘The Woman in Black’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds on the 27th October. And, that’s not to mention all the other theatre trips we have lined up for this year – so watch this space!

SCIENCE

Science Faculty Information

Year 9

Well done to year 9 on completing their first term at Shelley and in science. We are really pleased with how

the year group has settled in.

If you have ordered science textbooks then please could you remind your child to collect them. I need the

space back in my room! If you did not order books but would like to purchase before half term, I have some

surplus stock available at £30 for sets 1 and 2 and £20 for set 3 students (for sets please refer to your child’s

timetable). Some students claim to have no knowledge of your orders – so please do tell them you have

paid.

I would like to provide you with advance warning that year 9 science examinations will take place during

the week commencing 21st November. Students will sit a 30-minute examination paper in each of biology,

chemistry and physics.

The work will cover the topics studied so far in each subject as follows:

Biology

Topic 1a – Cell structure and cell division (whole topic)

Chemistry

Topic 1a – Atoms, elements compounds and mixtures (whole topic)

Tobic 1b – The Periodic Table up to and including the development of the modern periodic table

Physics

Topic 1a – Energy Transfers up to the end of the topic (whole topic)

We would recommend that revision begins over the half term holiday please. Student should use their

classbooks and if they have purchased them, their text books, to revise. We also recommend the website

GoConqr https://www.goconqr.com as a tool where students can create revision notes, share revision

activities and practice their skills.

The relevant GCSE examination specifications that we are working from can be viewed and downloaded by

scanning the following QR codes:

Biology – Topic 1a on pages 16-21 (as numbered on the document itself)

Chemistry – Topic 1a and 1b on pages 16-21 (as numbered on the document itself)

Physics – Topic 1a on pages 16-20 (as numbered on the document itself

Year 10

Year 10 students have just completed their first examinations of the year and I know that for some students

(and parents) this has been a stressful process. However the results show that we have a very strong year

group and a pleasing level of revision took place. When your child receives their monitoring their “Working

at” grades directly reflect their performance in these examinations. Their “Predicted grade” reflects our

GCSE 9-1 prediction based on overall performance since September.

We have decided to review the number of sets we enter for triple science on the basis of the test results.

Currently sets 10LM1, 10LM2, 10JK1 and 10KL2 are triple science sets. However, we are considering

maintaining sets 10JK3 and 10LM3 at the triple pace and challenge, considering how well they have

performed so far with a view to entering some or all of these students for triple science as well. If your child

is in set 10JK3 or 10LM3 please discuss this information with them and encourage them to keep working

hard so that we can go ahead with this plan.

If you have ordered science textbooks then please could you remind your child to collect them? I need the

space back in my room! If you did not order books but would like to purchase before half term, I have some

surplus stock available at £30 for triple science and £20 for combined science trilogy (some students claim

to have no knowledge of your orders – so please do tell them you have paid). Either the £30 or £20 books

would be fine for students in set 10JK3 and 10LM3 for now – we can look at topping the combined text

books up with triple revision guides (3 for £10) at a later date which give you a good complete package for

both courses.

Year 11

We are happy to share with you the following QR codes that link to documents containing timings and

dates for our remaining topics, mock exams and the real examinations.

Please could I ask you to watch out for science materials that are coming home from the biology, chemistry

and physics departments this week. Each of my heads of department have produced a set of materials

including questions that we are asking students to use to prepare for their mock examinations. These are in

the form of paper printed booklets each booklet corresponds to one of the mock examinations they will sit

at the end of November.

• Triple science students should have 6 booklets by the end of the week, unit 1 and unit 2 biology, chemistry and physics

• Double science students should have 3 booklets by the end of the week unit 2 biology, chemistry and physics

• Core science students should have 3 booklets by the end of the week: unit 1 biology, chemistry and physics

Finally, I am afraid we are unable to offer year 11 science revision guides for purchase in school this year.

This is because the publisher’s price (at £7.25 each) is much higher than the price on Amazon and other

online retailers. With the availability of second hand books in good condition online for as little as £2.50 I

cannot justify the cost of purchasing any stock at more than double this price, as it also ceases to be current

with the end of this year’s exams.
