STEM PROJECT DAY
On Tuesday 13 November 2018, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) educational day was held here at Shellharbour Public School. A
number of Wollongong University and Warilla High School students took time out
of their day to arrange some fun filled STEM activities for stages 2 and 3. Some of
the activities included Material Engineering, which we made gooey slime, a coding
session where we controlled a series of mini robots and a station which we tested
3D printed slingshots. This was a fantastic learning experience and enjoyable day
for the students at Shellharbour Public School. We are appreciative for all the
Wollongong University and Warilla High School volunteers who agreed to work in
their own time to create these spectacular activities for the children to participate
in. Hopefully the school community, in future, will take part in another one of
these fabulous, educational project days! Thanks to Mr Smart from Warilla High
School for his organisation - Brianna Welsh (5/6D) and Caitlin Gallagher (5/6C)

CONGRATULATIONS KATE SAUNDERS
Kate Saunders has been appointed to Tullimbar Public School as an Assistant Principal from the beginning of
2019. This is recognition that is long overdue and very much deserved. We will miss her enormously, but wish
her well in her new role. Congratulations mate!
WE WILL ROCK YOU
WIN Entertainment Centre is currently showcasing the production of ‘We Will
Rock You’. Elissa Dorrian, Rebecca Kencevski and Year 6 have decided to
bring the production to life at Shellharbour Public School. The production
stars the characters Galileo and Scaramouche as they travel on a journey to
bring back rock and roll. As it is not an easy quest, the characters struggle to
bring back the bohemian rhapsody. Come join us on this amazing adventure and purchase tickets for $7.00 per
person at the school office of Shellharbour Public School.
SCHOOL CAMPS
Our Year 5 and 6 have just returned from Cataract Scout Camp and our Years 3
and 4 from Mowbray Park Farmstay. A number of reports follow. These
memorable events aren’t possible without the preparedness of staff to not only
organise them, but actively participate during the camps necessarily taking
them away from their own families. My thanks to Kerri-Anne Docherty, Cathy
Testa, Rhonda Mosley, Kate Saunders, Maree Nikitaras, Vicki Prior, Kyle Jacobs,
Brendan Carter, Belinda Dawson, Janaya Rose and Elissa Dorrian. Particular
mention must be made of Jo Dyson who spent the entire five days at the camp
with both grades and Glenn Hayes (father of Jack) who helped supervise our
Year 5 students. Although I didn’t get to the Stage 2 camp, I did manage to
spend Wednesday with both Years 6 and Year 5. In difficult conditions, the kids were exceptional (as were the
teachers). The staff at the camp couldn’t stop complimenting our staff on the behaviour of our kids. Well done
everyone.
YEAR SIX CAMP REPORTS
On Monday, 25 November, Year Six departed the school. On the bus, we sang a lot of silly songs like ‘Baby
Shark’, ‘Let it Go’ and the Queen songs we have been doing for production. I tried to get some sleep after the
singing, but just when I was about to doze, Curtis and Dreau got all the boys on our end of the bus together and
they all yelled “Wake up Claire”. I was super annoyed, but it was pretty funny. When we arrived at Cataract
Scout Park, we were organised into three day groups and into our tents. We set up our tents and moved our
belongings into the tents and settled in. After fruit and cookies for morning tea, we began our activities. After
the giant swing we did caving. In the cave I got stuck and had to be pulled through but that probably added to
the fun. After caving, we had showers.
When we went to dinner, Mrs Dyson enthusiastically made us sing for our supper. While Mr Jacobs played the
guitar, we all sang “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen. We had lasagne and salad for dinner which tasted
really nice. Ryan became convinced that I ate poshly and then we all showed our imitations of what a posh
person looked like when they ate. Nate’s version was probably the funniest. We then had these little Dixie
icecream cups with topping for dessert. After dinner was done, we washed up our plates and cutlery in the
wash stations and went to the hall and played some games. At the end we did wall sits and I was one of the last
people left. We ended up singing “We Will Rock You” on the walls. Finally the night was over and we were
allowed to sleep after a long talk about gratitude.
But the night was not actually over. At about eleven o’clock (one hour after we’d been sent to bed), I had a
mega-super long bleeding nose. Mrs Dyson and Jenavieve were really nice and walked me to the bathroom and
waited around until my nose stopped bleeding. Phew! Sleep at last.
Camp was really good and that was just the first day. My favourite activities were the waterslides and the giant
swing. On the giant swing, I went upside down and let go with my hands. On the waterslides I did most of it
superman style and also flew out of it. I also did two or three man trains with my friends and we had a lot of
fun. When we did rock climbing I didn’t really trust my belayers but they didn’t drop me which was good. I did a
race with my friend and unfortunately lost. Orienteering was cancelled after the first task because of the rain so
we played games and did trivia instead. The teachers were really kind and always helpful. They really outdid
themselves this time - Claire Barter 5/6J
COLOUR RUN A reminder that we will try again with our
Colour Run on this Friday, 7 December.
Information on this event has been sent home,
including the times that each grade will
participate so parents who are able to, can join
their children. Please remember that your
child will need a signed permission note, a
white shirt and shorts that may remain
slightly discoloured. In short – no school
uniform on that Friday. Money raised goes
towards the Year 6 farewell gift to the school. Lunch will be at the usual time of 11.00 am.
SWIMMING SCHEME
As Australians, we spend a lot of our time in and around the water; it’s
a big part of our culture. For this reason, it’s important that our
students learn water safety and survival skills, so that they can
continue to enjoy aquatic activities. To help achieve this goal, the NSW
Department of Education runs the School Swimming and Water Safety
Program. This is a Government funded program that is free for
students. All that’s required
is that the schools meet pool entry and transport costs. I was very
impressed with the stoic nature of our Year 2 students and teachers
who at times have braved the wind and cold to continue with their
swimming program. I was particularly impressed with the
differentiated nature of the instruction from our staff as well. All
levels of ability and most importantly confidence was catered for.
HEART MADE FROM COINS On Friday, 16 November, many students at Shellharbour Public School participated in a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Many 'hearts' made of cardboard were brought from home, covered with silver and gold coins, and then placed within a larger heart in the Graham Tink COLA. A staggering $696.00 was raised; yet another testament to the generosity of our school community. I would also like to acknowledge the Ministries for Community Service and Finance who volunteered their own time to remove the money from the 'hearts' and count all of the coins; a wonderful effort considering their current hectic schedule. Again, thank you for your kind donations - Rhonda Mosley
ARE YOU LEAVING US? At the end of each school year, we have a number of families who move to another area
and leave our school. If you know your child will not be a part of this school in 2019, it
will assist our planning enormously if you could let the school know now. Please contact the
school office on 42951334 if that will be the case.

PEER SUPPORT During our Week 3 Peer Support session, the children focussed on the skills of winning in a friendly way and coping with losing. The children participated in various activities and discussed how to accept the outcome of a game, no matter what it is, in a friendly way in order to maintain those friendships. We encourage your child to practise these skills in all aspects of life - whether it be weekend sport or playing a board game with family or friends.
In our final session of the Peer Support module Keeping Friends, the children participated in a board game, reinforcing all of the concepts and skills learned over the past 2 terms. They were reminded of the qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to maintain friendships and make new friends. Each Peer Support group had the opportunity to celebrate what they had learned and the new friendships and connections they have made. Our Peer Support Leaders ran an activity of their choice and groups shared in a mass Picnic on the back playground.
Our Year 6 Leaders, and their Year 5 assistant leaders, should be congratulated on the wonderful job they have done in leading their groups. It has been wonderful to witness their growth in confidence and the relationships that have strengthened with students K-6.
