Dear Highclimber Students and Parents: Every spring each student has the opportunity to reflect on how they are progressing towards academic and career goals here at Shelton High. These goals are best set with reflection based on interest, aptitudes and insights gained in recent experience and achievements. Intentionally reviewing these goals while planning for the anticipated future will definitely make plans that help goals turn into reality. We design our course catalog to help guide students with their planning. In addition to ensuring students meet graduation requirements, students should also prepare themselves for life beyond high school. A well thought out and thorough four-year plan can provide direction for students while in high school and, of course, help with the transition to their dreams for the future. This document, their CSI teacher and their counselor are additional resources for a successful, challenging and relevant plan. As we all know, even the best plans need review. Please take the time to develop a clear four-year plan that is amended as needed every year to match academic needs and interests. Pay particular attention to registering for classes that will enhance a future career or explore an interest area. Remember that after making a plan, the commitment is to follow through. The future is not something that happens to us, it is something we actively do. The staff of Shelton High is here to educate, assist and support your goals and planning. Dear OBJH Students and Parents:

Welcome to Oakland Bay Junior High School where your high school journey begins. In 8th grade students will begin

creating a High School and Beyond Plan. The High School and Beyond Plan is a formal process designed to help students

think about their future and select course work that will best prepare them for their post high school goals. Students

create their High School and Beyond Plans in cooperation with parents/guardians and school staff. Students write their

plans in middle school and then continue to revise throughout high school to accommodate changing interests or goals.

This course catalogue has been prepared to help students plan a course of study that aligns with the Shelton School

District graduation requirements, their personal interests, and post-secondary education and career goals. In this

catalogue you will find important information such as graduation requirements, course offerings, and a brief description

of the courses.

At Oakland Bay Junior High, it is our goal to inspire students to discover their interests and passions, so they pursue

academic goals which afford them the opportunities to reach their career goals later in life. Please take the time to read

the course descriptions and carefully plan next year’s schedule as it can have an impact on high school graduation and

beyond.

COURSE INFORMATION

SCHEDULES HOW THE MASTER SCHEDULE IS BUILT

1. Students register for classes in spring, selecting the courses they would like to take. 2. Information is tallied and the number of sections needed for each course is computed. 3. Administrators, departments and counselors work together to design a master schedule, combining the number

of sections needed for each class and the number of available staff members. 4. When the best master schedule has been created, students will be scheduled into the classes they requested.

STUDENT SCHEDULES Student schedules are generated based on both student schedule requests submitted to school staff and the availability of school staff in areas of instruction. The master schedule is constructed using many sources of information and is balanced to meet the needs of all students. Requests submitted are considered closely in the creation of a student schedule; however not all requests can be granted in each situation. Student alternate requests will be accessed in times of conflict, as will a student’s remaining credit needs for earning a high school diploma. Being certain to submit all requested information with adherence to deadlines communicated by Shelton High School will assist school staff in meeting student scheduling needs. Please note that once schedules are complete, changes will be made only if the request meets one of the following criteria: student has previously failed a class from a currently assigned teacher, student is a senior who needs a course to meet graduation requirements, student has not met the prerequisite for a scheduled class, student has a current documented health issue that requires a change in schedule, student previously took and passed class, or student is currently missing a class. SCHEDULE CHANGE PROCESS

1. Students, families, and CSI advisors select courses and enter the requests into Skyward for the next school year during spring conferences.

2. Students review their requests in CSI and make changes. 3. In the Fall, students receive schedules and can request changes based on meeting criteria (see STUDENT

SCHEDULES above). 4. FIRST SEMESTER SCHEDULE CHANGE REQUESTS: May only be made within the first five school days of the school

year. SECOND SEMESTER SCHEDULE CHANGE REQUESTS: May only be made within the first five school days after students receive schedules from their CSI instructor.

5. During this time, teachers may also request changes for students who are academically misplaced. 6. All requests received by deadline are reviewed by a committee. REQUESTS RECEIVED AFTER 5 SCHOOL DAYS

WILL NOT BE REVIEWED BY THE COMMITTEE. 7. Any student who receives a denial of their schedule change request may make an appeal to the principal.

Appeals must be submitted no later than three schools days after the schedule change request deadline. YEAR LONG SCHEDULING Shelton High School students register for the following year’s classes in the spring. Both semesters’ courses are selected at this time. An effort is made to keep students with the same teacher for the full year in year long courses. Students should choose courses carefully as schedule changes are extremely limited and withdrawing from a course can result in a W or F on the transcript.

As a general guideline, Shelton High School uses the above grading system. Pass/Fail grades are used for CSI classes and Student Assistant positions only. Please see student/family handbook for more information on grading procedures and reporting. CREDIT RETRIEVAL Opportunities are available for students to make up credit for failed courses, including OdysseyWare, LEAP, summer school, and other options. Please visit the Counseling office for more information. HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES If a high school level course is taken before the 9th grade, the student must request the course be entered on their transcript. Please see the Counseling office for appropriate forms and more information. WORLD LANGUAGE COMPETENCY-BASED CREDITS In July 2010, the Washington State Board of Education (SBE) endorsed a model policy and procedure for districts to offer competency-based credits for world languages (i.e. based on a student's demonstrated proficiency in a language that was not gained via high school coursework). Students interested in gaining high school credit in this way may visit the following website for more information: http://www.k12.wa.us/WorldLanguages/AssessmentDays.aspx. REPORT CARDS/ PROGRESS REPORTS Semester report cards are issued twice a year and are mailed to all students. Semester grades are posted to the official transcript. Mid-term progress reports are issued at the middle of each semester and also mailed to all students. These grades are for information only. Report cards and progress reports include letter grades, attendance summaries, and important school information. WAIVING COURSE REQUIREMENTS Under special circumstances and in accordance with RCW 28A.230.050, SHS has a process in place to accommodate students who need to waive the physical education requirement.

1. Waiver requests must be completed before the last semester of the student’s senior year. 2. The student must have taken a full schedule all four years to be granted a waiver. 3. The student’s proposed schedule for both semesters must show that the student does not have room for the

class he/she desires to waive (i.e the student is fully scheduled with no open periods). 4. Students must obtain a waiver form from the guidance center and initiate the request in accordance with the

deadlines. 5. Justification must be given for the request. 6. The completed application form should be returned to the counselor. 7. The principal must sign the waiver for approval to begin the process. 8. Upon completion the student must submit proof of documented hours for final approval.

REPEATING OF COURSES All occurrences of repeated courses must be included on the transcript, along with the credits earned in each of those occurrences. If a course is retaken for grade improvement, the higher grade earned in the course is included in the calculation of the student’s GPA. See the Counseling office for more information.

NCAA ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY Students interested in participating in college athletics after high school need to be aware that additional academic courses are required for eligibility and not all courses are approved for NCAA eligibility. Student athletes must also register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, preferably during the junior year. Visit the NCAA website www.eligibilitycenter.org and see the Athletic office or the Counseling office for more information. CLIMBER SUCCESS INITIATIVE (CSI) All students are assigned to a grade-level class in which they will work with an advisor towards completing Washington State requirements. These include the High School & Beyond Plan, Certificate of Academic Achievement, and state testing or approved alternates. HIGH SCHOOL & BEYOND PLAN The High School and Beyond Plan is a formal process designed to help students think about their future goals and how to accomplish those goals. This includes exploring interests and career options, developing a course plan for high school, and exploring opportunities to develop skills. Students create their High School and Beyond Plans in cooperation with parents/guardians and school staff. Ideally, students start their plans in eighth grade and then continue to revise them throughout high school to accommodate changing interests or goals. WASHINGTON STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY The Seal of Biliteracy is an award to promote and recognize linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy in one or more world languages in addition to English through the establishment of a Washington state seal of Bi-Literacy. COLLEGE ACADEMIC DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS (CADRS) The College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs) refer to college admissions criteria established by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). The term differs from high school graduation requirements that are determined by the State Board of Education and local school districts. Courses meeting CADR are determined by the school district and noted on the transcript with the “B” designation. More information about courses and guidelines can be found on the Washington State Achievement Council’s website at http://www.wsac.wa.gov/. CERTIFICATE OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT/ CERTIFICATE OF INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT The Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) and Certificate of Individual Achievement (CIA) tell families, schools, businesses and colleges that an individual student has mastered a minimum set of reading, writing, science, and math skills by graduation. COURSE FEES Courses may have applicable fees. Some financial assistance is available for students who qualify. See Counseling Office for details.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY A program of study is a comprehensive, structured approach for delivering academic and career/ technical education to prepare students for postsecondary education and career success. Shelton High School offers several Program of Study pathways. Programs of Study are intricate guides for students, mapping out specific course options for a chosen career path from freshman year to after high school. Programs of Study show how to smoothly transition into postsecondary education from High School Career & Technical pathways. Students who choose CTE pathways are universally competitive for work, prepared for postsecondary education, and ready for life as influential, contributing members of civilization. Career Pathways can serve as guides along with other career planning materials as learners continue on a career path. Courses listed within these programs are only recommended coursework and should be individualized to meet each learner’s education and career goals. Please see Career Center for details.

COLLEGE COURSES AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Shelton High School offers a variety of classes on the high school campus that create opportunity for students to earn both high school and college credit after successful completion. Courses being offered will be determined by student enrollment and faculty availability. RUNNING START Running Start is a dual credit program that allows eligible juniors and seniors to enroll in college level classes to receive both high school and college credit. In order to qualify for the program students must have permission of their parents and must comply with all college requirements including placement testing and maintenance of acceptable academic standing. Tuition is waived for college courses taken through Running Start. Student pays for books fees, and transportation. An informational meeting will be held in the early spring. Please plan to attend if you are considering this option as there are many factors to consider. COLLEGE IN HIGH SCHOOL This program allows high school students to take college courses within their school and earn high school credit and college credit. Students remain on the high school campus and take accelerated courses. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES This program developed by the College Board enables high school students to study college level material through enrollment in an AP course. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the subject by taking an AP exam in May. Based on these AP scores, colleges and universities may then grant credit, placement or both. Students can benefit from these courses by learning a subject in greater depth, developing skills critically important to successful study in college. TECH PREP Tech prep programs enable students to remain in high school while beginning a CTE technical program that leads to a two-year degree, certificate or employment. Tech Prep programs combine the academic courses that students will need for success in college and technical courses that they will need to prepare them for a career. NEW MARKET SKILLS CENTER Located in Tumwater, the New Market Skills Center offers specialized technical training to juniors and seniors from several area school districts. Each program is a three-period block in the afternoon.

POST HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING Deciding what to do after high school is a complex and complicated process. The curriculum in CSI is designed to assist with this decision. More information about post high school planning and financial aid can be found through the Counseling Center, Career Center, and through post-secondary institutions.

Four-Year Colleges and Universities Students who plan to apply to four-year colleges are required to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). Most four-year colleges have similar entrance requirements. However, students and parents should review individual college requirements carefully. Information is available in the Career Center and by going online to the college of your choice. Community and Technical Colleges Two-year community colleges and technical colleges are open to everyone. A placement test is required for placement in English and math classes and needs to be completed before registering for classes. Application deadlines to community colleges and technical schools begin in January and scholarship deadlines are often in January around the time of the FAFSA, so apply early. If your test level does not indicate college level competencies, remedial courses will be required. To qualify for financial aid, a person either has earned a high school diploma or a GED. Students who do not meet all of the four-year college or university admission requirements may enroll in a community college transfer program and when the requirements are completed, then transfer to a four-year school. Apprenticeship An apprentice is a wage-earning worker who learns a craft or skills through planned, supervised work on the job. Admission requirements to apprenticeship programs vary, depending on the characteristics of the occupation. Generally, a prospective apprentice needs to be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma. Specific information can be obtained from the Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Washington Department of Labor and Industries, Apprenticeship section. See the web site www.LNI.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Apprenticeship/ for the Washington State Registered Apprenticeship programs. Military Program All military programs, enlistment, ROTC and academies require the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test and a high school diploma. For ROTC programs and academies, the four-year college and university admission requirements listed above must also be met. Academy applicants must obtain a Congressional nomination in order to be considered for an appointment. Students interested in ROTC or the academies must contact their school counselor to apply in the spring of their junior year. AmeriCorps The AmeriCorps program offers opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. Whether your service makes a community safer, gives a child a second chance or helps protect the environment, you will be getting things done through AmeriCorps. Participants can choose a variety of options from tutoring, environmental jobs, building houses, etc. Full time participants who complete their service will receive compensation to go toward their education.

Students will read and analyze challenging fiction and nonfiction novels, plays and poetry. Students will complete assignments including essays, research papers, short stories, poems, grammar assignments, and group projects. Homework, attendance, and a strong work ethic are required. A focus of the course will be on the skills to prepare for national assessments.

Junior English (Early American Literature) Credit: English Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 11 Students will demonstrate command of standard English conventions and read and analyze U.S. literature prior to the twentieth century, completing related writing assignments. Students will study the elements of argument and apply them in an essay and will complete a research paper and presentation based upon an early American author.

Junior English (20th Century U.S. Literature) Credit: English Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 11

Students will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and read U.S. literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, completing related writing assessments. Informational speeches and essays will be required for the course.

Junior Honors English Credit: English Prerequisite: Pass state and national testing; minimum SRI score of 1031. Current academic success. Length: Year Grade Level: 11 This course involves an in-depth study of American literature. Composition, research, and presentation skills are vital for success. Writing effective college-admission essays and SAT preparation will be embedded into course units. Students need to expect to read challenging, advanced level materials, to participate fully in class activities and discussions, and to consistently complete daily homework assignments.

Science Fiction

Literary study will focus on themes such as good versus evil, critique of society, utopia versus dystopia, and the role of technology. Myths and Legends

Credit: English or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 12 Students will explore the classic mythology of the Greeks and Romans as well as legends from various cultures. Activities will include presentations, comparative literary analysis, argumentation, and projects involving story telling. Research and nonfiction reading will be included.

Sports Literature Credit: English or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 12 Students will study the diversity of the sports experience, the role of sports in society, and the basic elements of a sport, such as competition, personal goal setting, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Course work will include reading sports-related nonfiction and fiction, research, argumentation, writing reports and personal essays, as well as presentations.

Business English Credit: English or Elective or CTE Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Students will focus on proper grammar usage, basic punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. Students will be required to read nonfiction, including at least one business-related book. Writing will focus on the composition of business correspondence as well as letters of argumentation, refusal, adjustment and collection. ENGLISH FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL)

OBJH (ELL) Tutorial Credit: Elective Prerequisite: Placement Based. ESOL Qualification Length: Year Grade Level: 9 Students will learn strategies toward better study habits as well as receive tutorial support on work from other classes. This is a pass/fail grade course based on grades from concurrent classes. This is for English as a Second Language students only.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ELL)

(ELL) Beginning English Credit: English Prerequisite: Placement Based Length: Year Grade Level 10, 11, 12 All students whose home language is not English and who do not score sufficiently high on the English Language Proficiency test are required to take ESOL. This level of ESOL is designed for non- or limited-English language learners. All four language learning areas are stressed: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. However, emphasis at the beginning is placed on listening and speaking.

(ELL) Intermediate English Credit: English Prerequisite: Placement Based or Successful completion of (ELL) Beginning English Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 All of the basic skills learned in ELL Beginning English will continue to be expanded with more emphasis on reading and writing. The mechanics of written English will be stressed as well as using more complex forms and grammatical structures.

OBJH Natural Resources - Standard Freshman Earth Science Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation Length: Year Grade Level: 9 This class is intended for students who want to experience a more hands-on approach to the required high school geology, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology and basic chemistry curriculum. As a part of the Career and Technical Education program with Shelton High School, students will explore career options, leadership skills, employment preparation, as well as academic and life skills training. Emphasis is placed on the cycles and systems that affect the Olympic Peninsula and the Pacific Northwest. Numerous activities and labs will develop problem-solving techniques and inquiry methods. There are numerous mandatory field trips and outside classroom environment activities.

OBJH Natural Resources - Advanced Freshman Earth Science Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Placement Based or Teacher Recommendation Length: Year Grade Level: 9 This class is intended for students who are college bound or extremely interested in science. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge concerning astronomy, geology, meteorology, oceanography and basic chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on the cycles and systems that affect the Olympic Peninsula and the Pacific Northwest. Numerous activities, field trips and labs will develop problem-solving techniques and inquiry methods. The material in this class is presented at a much faster pace and in greater depth than Regular Freshman Earth Science. This class also requires additional outside reading and uses a college-level textbook. There are numerous mandatory field trips and outside classroom environment activities. This course is part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program with Shelton High School. The CTE classes provide exploration of career options, leadership skills, employment preparation and advanced and continuing education.

OBJH STEM Robotics 101 Credit: CTE (.50 CR) AND SCIENCE (.50 CR) Prerequisite: None Length: Year Grade Level: 9 Stem Robotics 101 is an introductory class that uses the Lego MINDSTORMS EV3 Education Base Set and EV3 software to teach Robotics and programming. STEM Robotics is a CTE class, so the career environment presented is that of a professional working in a high-tech company.

General Biology Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 In this course students will demonstrate knowledge concerning organism interactions, population dynamics, ecosystem structure, the microscopic/macroscopic world and applied genetics. Through the use of numerous lab activities, students will develop the ability to incorporate scientific methods to problem solve.

Plant Biology Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This course is designed to meet all state and local standards for high school biology requirements, including End of Course (EOC) exam. This course will use the principle foundation of Biology to explore all aspects of Plant Biology. Topics covered are leadership, classification, scientific investigation, ecology, cells, plant physiology and structures, genetics, and much more. This is a hands-on class with a lot of active participation, including working in the greenhouse. Students will have the opportunity to be a member of FFA.

Advanced Placement Biology Credit: Science or Elective COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE Prerequisite: Background in Chemistry, Math, and Biology recommended Length: Year Grade Level: 11, 12 AP Biology is a comprehensive survey of general biology that includes ecology, biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics and heredity, biotechnology, structure and function of organisms, diversity, and evolution. AP Biology introduces students to overarching scientific concepts that are used to link major biological themes. AP Biology is designed to be rigorous, interesting, and thought provoking. Participating students need to be self-directed and motivated. Students will be prepared to take the AP Biology culminating exam.

Human Anatomy and Physiology Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Biology Length: Year Grade Level: 11, 12 This is a college preparatory course teaching the anatomical and physiological aspects of the human body. The course includes comprehensive lectures, extensive lab work and numerous audiovisual aids. Medical terminology will be utilized. Students must be willing to participate in laboratory dissections.

Ecology of Northwest - Streams, Salmon and Forests Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester, Two-Period block class Grade Level: 11, 12 This class is a field, lecture and laboratory course that emphasizes the identification, habitats, adaptations and interrelationships of organisms in the Pacific Northwest ecosystems of streams and forests with special emphasis on salmon and native culture.

Ecology of Northwest - Lakes, Beaches and Wetlands Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Biology Length: Semester, Two-Period block class Grade Level: 11, 12 This class is a field, lecture and laboratory course that emphasizes the identification, habitats, adaptations, and interrelationships of organisms in the Pacific Northwest marine/estuary, lake and wetland ecosystems with special emphasis on how to maintain water quality in those ecosystems.

Zoology Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Biology or Instructor Approval Length: Semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Zoology is a college preparatory course that provides students with an overview of basic principles, concepts, and processes in animal biology. Coursework is intended to provide an understanding and appreciation of animal diversity on earth and the complex processes that have produced such diversity.

Marine Biology Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Biology Length: Semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Students will be exposed to the living and non-living factors, which contribute to the uniqueness of marine ecosystems. The student will study the open ocean, local water and beaches, becoming familiar with the organisms associated with each area.

Chemistry Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Pass Geometry with a C or Better Length: Year Grade Level: 11, 12 This course includes the study of matter and the laws that describe its behavior. Atomic structure, chemical-physical properties, balancing equations, gas laws, equations and acids-base reactions will be taught.

Honors Chemistry Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Pass Geometry with a C or Better Length: Year Grade Level: 11, 12 Honors Chemistry is a college prep class and focuses on the study of matter and the laws that govern its behavior. It includes atomic structure, chemical reactions, acids-base chemistry, the gas laws and chemical equilibrium. Problem solving is a large component of the course. It is suggested for math, science, or engineering majors and highly recommended for students planning to enter chemistry, electronics, engineering, architecture, astronomy or any physical science field in college. Curriculum includes the study of forces, motion, statics, energy, light, sound, color, and electricity.

Science Living Skills I Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Advisor permission Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This class offers a hands-on approach to basic science through daily living skills. It addresses hygiene, self-care, germ prevention and nutrition, measuring, following procedures in safe food preparation.

Science Living Skills II Credit: Science or Elective Prerequisite: Advisor permission Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This lab science course will be project-oriented and designed to offer a variety of curriculum across the health, safety and sciences. Topics include: proper nutrition, hygiene, strategies for emergency preparedness, awareness of various systems within the human body and physical sciences.

Animal Science Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Students will learn about the importance of a wide variety of animals: animals as organisms, nutrition and feeding, health and reproduction. Animals will be a part of this class. Students will also learn about careers in the animal industry and have the opportunity to participate in FFA.

Advanced Horticulture Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Intro to Horticulture or Instructor permission Length: Semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Advanced Horticulture prepares individuals to grow and utilize ornamental plant varieties for research, commercial and aesthetic purposes. Course includes instruction in plant genetics, plant physiology, soil chemistry and plant nutrition. In addition, students are introduced to careers related to plant science.

Intro to Electronics I Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: YEar Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This course is for those students who like to build things and make them work. Students will learn how to solder wire and solder parts onto circuit boards. This means lots of hands on projects where you get to make things like printed circuit boards, AM radio, power supply, audio amplifier and more. Come learn how an LED (light emitting diode) and other electronic parts work.

Robotics Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This is not the place you build Lego Robots and watch them follow a line! This program will explore the robotics Industry and the world of Mechatronics/Industrial Animation. You will learn electrical circuits and computer control logic with applications in unmanned autonomous vehicles. UV’s and Mechatronics is the wave of your future, get on board.

Principles of Engineering Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Do you like to build things? If yes, then Principles of Engineering is a class for you. You will build things like bridges, catapults, bird feeders, cloud chambers and some electronic devices. Computers are used for research and drawing mechanical devices. You will learn why things work the way they do. A career in engineering would place you in the top wage earners in the 21st century.

Naval Science Credit: Science or CTE or Elective Prerequisite: Naval Intro A & B or Instructor’s approval Length: Year Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Builds on Naval Introduction A and B to further develop the desired traits of citizenship and leadership. OBJH Introduction to 3-D Art Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Grades: 9; one semester course; 0.5 credit Sculpture introduces students to three-dimensional art including working with clay to make pinch, slab, coil and free form sculptures. Students will work with the potter wheel. Students will develop sculpture techniques while considering creative expression, form, and the elements and principles of art and design.

OBJH 3-D Art Extended Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: Passing grade from Intro to 3-D Art Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 The extended course continues the introduction of three-dimensional art and includes wire sculpture, copper enameling and glass projects such as stepping stones and other projects. Students will explore more advanced sculpture techniques and mediums while continuing to consider creative expression, form, and the elements and principles of art and design.

OBJH Journalism/Yearbook Credit: Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Students will be engaged in every step of creating the Oakland Bay Junior High School Yearbook and publishing a monthly newsletter. They will learn aspects of design, photography, production, marketing, proofreading, peer review, writing, and editing. Students must possess a commitment to developing greater responsibility, time management, teamwork, and communication skills. Attending various school events outside the regular school day will be required. OJBH Timberwolf Choir Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester or Year Grade Level: 9 Fee: Class fee required for uniforms and travel expenses The OBJH Timberwolf Choir is a non-auditioned singing ensemble open to all students at OBJH. Students will develop proper singing technique and gain knowledge of basic music skills, music theory and music history. Students will learn how to read and notate music, will learn the history of jazz (America's own true musical style) and will learn how to play a very basic musical instrument.

Introduction to the Arts Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 An overview course incorporating the study of art forms which could include visual arts, music, theatre and dance to aid students in understanding, appreciating, and communicating effectively through the arts. Theatre II, III, IV Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: Theatre I Length: Semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Students will continue to develop and practice theatre skills through the study of various theatre techniques. Topics could include children's theatre, puppetry, improvisation, mime and movement, dialects, the various styles of acting and play production.

Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Students will study stagecraft techniques for theatre, music and community events. Stage lighting, theatrical sound, special effects, set construction, scene painting and more are covered. This class can be repeated for credit.

OBJH General Marketing Credit: CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Interested in a business or marketing career? The marketing program is where you want to be! General Marketing curriculum introduces basic marketing concepts, sports marketing, the sales process, and promotion techniques as well as regular guest speakers. You will learn entrepreneurship skills required to run a student store. We also focus on communication and employability skills. Students in marketing have the opportunity to join DECA, the leadership component of the class. DECA allows students to compete, travel and develop leadership skills.

OBJH Beginning Construction Related (Woodworking) Credit: CTE or Elective INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION AVAILABLE Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Fee: Determined by projects Students learn hands on experience in the discipline of construction related skills: basic safety, hand/power tools, blue print reading, basic communication skills and group and individual project making. These modules will be selected from the Core and Level One Curricula and will provide students an opportunity to earn National Certification in Carpentry through NCCER. OBJH Welding I Credit: CTE or Elective COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Fee: $10 In Welding 1 the student will learn shop, power tool, hand tool and welding safety. They will learn how to operate and safely use Oxy-fuel welding and cutting, Gas Metal Arc Welding, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding equipment. Students will learn the basic welding industry joints, basic weld inspection, basic blueprint reading, basic shop math, basic job estimating and basic sheet metal fabrication. Also students will be studying the nationally certified N.C.C.E.R program. This is a tech prep class that will earn college credit for those students receiving a grade of B or better and registering during the class with the community college. Offered second semester only.

OBJH Engineering Technology Credit: CTE or Elective Prerequisite: None Length: Semester Grade Level: 9 Students will work in our Synergistic Technology lab and shop where they will have the opportunity to explore a number of exciting subjects. These include Radio Broadcast, Robots, Flight, Graphic Communications, Career Explorations, Electricity, Creative Solutions, Energy Power and Mechanics, Digital Transportation, Research and Design and Structures. Students will also learn the safe operation of machines and equipment in the lab.

Emphasis is placed on the cycles and systems that affect the Olympic Peninsula and the Pacific Northwest. Numerous activities and labs will develop problem-solving techniques and inquiry methods. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge concerning astronomy, geology, meteorology, oceanography and basic chemistry. Numerous activities, field trips and labs will develop problem-solving techniques and inquiry methods. If the answer is yes, sign up for CAD. In this course you will learn to make two dimensional drawings using a computer that has very good software called AutoCAD. AutoCAD software will help you make perfect drawings that can be used to build things or express ideas. You will be given plenty of time to complete your work in the classroom and there is no homework for this class.

Advanced CAD (Computer Aided Design) Credit: CTE or Elective COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE Prerequisite: Intro to CAD Length: Semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Advanced CAD (Computer Aided Design) is an extension of “Intro to CAD.” Students expand their use of design software from 2D, AutoCAD, to 3D using Rhino3D. In Advanced CAD, students will learn how to navigate Rhino3D by the proper use of tools. Students will be given a series of drawings and projects to complete that demonstrate their understanding of how to design and draw using Rhino3D.

This course will use the principle foundation of Biology to explore all aspects of Plant Biology. New Market Vocational Skills Center is a vocational school located in Tumwater offers technical programs for high school students to prepare for employment directly out of high school or pre-training for advanced training after high school.

Transportation: A bus is available and encouraged for transportation each day. The bus leaves Shelton High School at 10:55 a.m. and returns at 2:20 p.m. with exceptions on early release days. Some New Market programs require that student provide their own transportation. OBJH Honors Choir Credit: Fine Arts or Elective Prerequisite: Instructor Approval Length: Year Grade Level: 9 Fee: Class fee required for uniforms and travel expenses The OBJH Honors Choir is an advanced choir for singers seeking challenging music and higher-level learning. Students must meet the approval of the director to be selected for this ensemble. Students will develop proper vocal technique for group and solo singing, as well as intermediate level music skills, music theory and music history exposure. The OBJH Honors Choir is a preparatory choir for the Shelton High School auditioned choirs. The Honors Choir will perform in all major school concerts and travel to regional festivals. This is a performance-based class, so performances and some rehearsals will be required outside of class time.
