Shepherd’s Path A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions Memorial Day, Lesson 1 Lesson Title: Remembering to Be Thankful Take Home Point: A thankful heart is a happy heart. Warm-Up: A few years ago, a popular saying appeared: “He who dies with the most toys wins.” It reminds me of the story of steel magnate John Rockefeller, who in the early 1900s was considered one of the wealthiest and most powerful businessmen in the world. During an interview he was asked, “You are rich beyond anyone’s dreams. How much is enough?” Rockefeller replied, “Just a little bit more.” In those five words he succinctly articulated the mindset of the discontented. Whatever he had was not enough. And with Rockefeller’s focus on gaining what he didn’t have, thanksgiving to the God who provided what he did have was forgotten. During his lifetime, he considered Christians to be weak and Jesus to be a matter for others. He died a bitter, hard- hearted man, still looking for an edge in money and power over anyone and everyone else. Read: Psalm 103:2-5; Philippians 4:4 Observation (What happened?): List all the benefits from the Lord that David mentions in Psalm 103:2-5. According to Paul’s letter to the Philippians, what is the basis for our rejoicing always? Interpretation (What does it mean?): What do you think David means when he says the Lord satisfies your desires with good things? What does it mean to always rejoice? Insight: One person in the Old Testament stands out for his attitude of rejoicing in the Lord. You may not have heard of him. His name is Habakkuk. His namesake book is in the part of the Bible known as the Minor Prophets. Habakkuk asks the Lord how long he is going to put up with the wickedness of the Israelites, so God says he is sending the Babylonians as his instrument of judgment. Habakkuk is horrified. “They’re worse than the Israelites!” He tries to talk God out of it to no avail, of course. Eventually, Habakkuk understands God’s plan is beyond comprehension, and in verses 3:17-19 (NIV), he says, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.” Now that’s rejoicing regardless of circumstances. Application (What does it mean to me?): When is the last time your soul rejoiced in the Lord? How close to “always” are you? Time yourself for exactly two minutes. During that time, write down every blessing from God you can think of, not including any stuff. Which did you run out of first – time or blessings? A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions God is Our Rescuer Series, Lesson 6

Lesson Title: Stand Back and Watch the Rescue Take Home Point: In the middle of a fight, when I have lost all my might, stand back and I will see,

THAT GOD WILL RESCUE ME!

Warm-Up: Have you ever heard anyone say, “And then…I rescued myself!” Not likely! Someone may say they escaped a situation or dodged a bullet or got out of a scrape, but topically a rescue is not considered to be self-performed. So what is the key feature of a rescue? In a genuine rescue, someone other than the one being rescued successfully acts to eliminate the danger or remove the person being saved from the threatening situation. Rescues occur because those in peril cannot act on their own to avoid harm. Read: Exodus 13:17 – 14:31 Observation (What happened?): Why did God want the Egyptians to go after the Israelites? How much fighting did the Israelites have to do in order for the Egyptians to be defeated? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why do you think the Israelites were so afraid when they saw Pharaoh’s army coming after them? How many different lessons can you see for the Israelites to learn in the rescue God provided and how he provided it? Insight: The Israelites faced an impossible situation. Their reaction was fear, and they cried out to God and Moses. Not, “Lord, save us!” but, “We wish we were still slaves!” But since God is merciful and has a plan far beyond human understanding, his response was to act anyway to rescue his people. His timing was intended to maximize Israel’s understanding of his presence and power – he didn’t have them cross days before so they were safely beyond the reach of the Egyptian army. They got across just in time, with only God between them and Pharaoh. And it’s not likely any of them thought God would do it as he did. His means of rescue was unexpected, even “impossible.” For us, we are to demonstrate faith just as the Israelites did – walking one step at a time, not knowing the end but trusting God that he will deliver. The lesson is to not limit God – expect him to rescue, but in his own way and time. He can and will do it. Application (What does it mean to me?): What lessons have you learned when God has rescued you? How do you apply them today? What difficulty or fear are you facing that requires God’s might to overcome? Pray for his deliverance in his way and time, and expect him to act on your behalf.

Take Home Point: To trust people means that you can count on them. Lesson Title: A Rescue Plan You Can Count On

Warm-Up: The story is told of a circus performer who claimed he would cross Niagara Falls on a high wire. On the day of his performance, he stood before the people who came to watch and said, “Do you believe I can do this?” The excited crowd roared, “YES!” With that, the acrobat carefully and steadily walked the wire across the falls and back. The crowd cheered his success. Then he asked them, “Do you believe I could carry a person on my back across the falls?” “YES!” the crowd roared again. “Do I have any volunteers?” Ooo, silence. Although they saw the acrobat do it, none were willing to trust him with their life. Read: Exodus 16 Observation (What happened?): Who were the Israelites really grumbling against? What was required of the Israelites in order for them to eat? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why do you think the Israelites grumbled about a lack of food so quickly after seeing God’s miraculous rescue at the Red Sea? What was God teaching the Israelites by how often they had to gather their food? Insight: Did God deliver ready-to-eat manna as the people sat at their tables? Of course not. They had to gather what he provided. This was an important lesson for the Israelites and for us as well. A friend of mine once said that what we really want is a “Bic” God who “works the first time every time” just to satisfy our needs. The Israelites were no different. It may seem a silly question, but why did God require them to gather the manna they ate? For the same reason he asks us to pray when he knows what we need and why he tells us to deliver his message of rescue to the world. Our actions put “feet to our faith.” We exhibit belief by acting on God’s promises. That strengthens our faith and opens the door for God to teach us of his care, his unfailing personal presence, and his desire for us to be a partner in accomplishing his work on earth. Application (What does it mean to me?): What are you grumbling about in your life right now? Who are you really grumbling against? Take a few minutes to walk around your house and thank God for providing what you see. Be specific in your prayer. Sometime this week, do the same in another part of your life – family, friends, work, church, etc.

Shepherd’s Path A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions

God is Our Rescuer Series, Lesson 8 Lesson Title: What Rescued People Do

Take Home Point: God shows us the best path to follow – the Ten Commandments.

Warm-Up: A friend of mine suffered a heart attack several years ago. It was not fatal, in part because of the prompt response and excellent care of medical professionals. During his recovery, my friend was given a list of “commandments” for healthier living involving diet, exercise, work habits, etc. He has been extremely careful in following these instructions; one might say he follows them religiously! Those who were his rescuers demonstrated their ability to help him, and he trusts the directions they gave to avoid, as much as possible, the future need for rescue. Read: Exodus 19-20 Observation (What happened?): Which of the Ten Commandments direct what a person should do instead of what a person should not do? What was the response of the Israelites to the presence of God? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why did God give the Ten Commandments? What did God want to teach through his commandments? Insight: Why do we find it difficult to obey instructions we are given? Things like road detours, test instructions, directions for assembly, work processes – these are generally provided to help us succeed in what we are attempting to do. Usually we recognize the value of directions and are willing to comply. So when we don’t, why not? Sometimes because we think we have a better way, or we don’t want to take the time to comprehend and go by the instructions given. But to be honest, sometimes it’s just because we are not going to let someone tell us what to do or how to do it! Simply put, it is our desire to be our own authority. More than the occasional failure, it will bring spiritual death unless it is overcome. Read Romans Chapter 7. In his own words, Paul is ruthlessly honest about this in his own life: “Although I have the desire to do what is right, I don’t do it.” (Romans 7:18). Thankfully, he also supplies God’s answer in 7:25: “I thank God that our Lord Jesus Christ rescues me!” Application (What does it mean to me?): How do you respond when you break one of God’s commands? How does God want you to respond? Thank Jesus right now for the power to live a life pleasing to God.

Warm-Up: “Don’t leave the house while I’m gone.” “Don’t answer the door and let anyone in the house.” “Don’t talk to strangers.” “Stay right beside me while we’re in the store.” These are all very good instructions we give our children for their well-being. Do they always listen and follow these instructions? No, not always. Occasionally, they genuinely forget or misunderstand. We can excuse that as part of growing up and use it as a learning experience for them. But when they don’t obey because they want to do it their way, or they listen to a friend instead of their parents, then it is a problem that requires a firm response.

Shepherd’s Path A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions

God is Our Rescuer Series, Lesson 9

Take Home Point: Only worship God. Lesson Title: Fooled People Worship False Gods

Read: Exodus 32 Observation (What happened?): Why did the people tell Aaron they wanted him to make a god? What did Moses say so that the Lord relented and did not destroy the Israelites? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why do you think the Israelites wanted an idol to worship? What do you think God wanted the people to do while they waited? Insight: In Exodus 24:14, Moses told the Israelite elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you.” Then he went up the mountain to receive the law of God. As frequently occurs when people are told to wait for God, the Israelites got impatient. With impatience they either forgot the direction Moses gave or chose to ignore it. The result is what you read in Exodus 32. It’s not really so unlike us. Sometimes God asks us to wait on him so the timing of his work is just right. But we get impatient and try to do something on our own, or we look to someone else for help. When that happens, we are just like the Israelites at the foot of the mountain. We do something foolish. In fact, we have even less of an excuse because we have the Bible, where God’s promises are written so we can be reminded of them any time. He promises to never leave us, to work for our good, to complete his work in us, and so much more. We can depend on his promises no matter how distant he seems. He is always with us working on our behalf. Application (What does it mean to me?): What do you need to guard against so it does not become an idol that you care about more than the Lord? What do you do when you are tempted to trust something other than God for your future?

Warm-Up: There is an interesting situation that occurs each year with my favorite college football team. The school recruits the best high school players it can to maintain a winning tradition. The new collegiates were real standouts in high school. For some, talent alone carried them through their high school years. When those players are introduced to the new training regimen and playbook, it’s a real shock. One or more decide they can continue to get by on talent alone. The humiliation of the first practice opens their eyes to their need for the coaches’ guidance. Read: Joshua 9:3-27 Observation (What happened?): By God’s command, what were the Israelites to do with the inhabitants of the land? According to verse 14, what did Israel’s leaders not do when the Gibeonites told their story? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why do you think the Israelites did not inquire of the Lord? How do you think Joshua and the other leaders felt when they discovered they had been deceived? Insight: How often have you found yourself looking back at a situation and saying or thinking “if only” or “I wish?” You know there is nothing you can do about what happened, and the consequences may be with you a long time, but you also know that you trusted your own decision-making without consulting God. Usually it is not during the difficult times that this occurs – it seems then that we are well aware of our neediness and cry to God for guidance. No, it is usually when things are going well in our lives, when the “right” choice seems obvious, that we stumble on Satan’s temptation or our overconfidence. It’s in those times we really need to keep our guard up and be aware of our constant need for God’s help, even in what seem like little things. Our human nature wants so much to be independent, just like a growing child. But just like a child, we still need our heavenly Father’s guiding hand and direction. We always will. It’s how he made us. Application (What does it mean to me?): How do you make talking to God a part of your everyday living? What situation are you facing in which you need God’s wisdom? Pray for your small group children to ask God for guidance in their everyday lives. Pray for their parents, too.

Lesson Title: Who Will Take a Stand for the Living God?

Take Home Point: Put God first.

Warm-Up: Most of us know the accounts of how Christians were cruelly killed in the Coliseum in Rome by fire, starving beasts, or gladiators. But did you know that the Coliseum persecution killings were stopped by one man who took a stand for the Lord? One day as the “games” were underway, a man named Telemachus jumped from the stands and cried out for Caesar to stop it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. So shocked was everyone that all paused and turned to see what Caesar would do. Caesar gestured “thumbs down”, and a gladiator killed Telemachus on the spot. Telemachus died, but from that day on, the “sport” murder of Christians in the Coliseum stopped. Read: Judges 6:1-32 Observation (What happened?): Why did the angel of the Lord say Gideon would defeat the Midianites? How did Gideon obey God in preparation for leading Israel, even though it caused hostility among other Israelites? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why do you think the Lord visited Gideon directly to declare him as the one who would lead Israel against the Midianites? Why do you think Joash wasn’t upset about his son’s actions in tearing down and burning the center of his idol worship? Insight: It is common to find that people view the God of the Old Testament as different from the God of the New Testament. But the Bible is remarkably consistent from front to back in both the revealed character of God and how he deals with individuals. For example, in this week’s reading in Judges, Gideon is directed to destroy an idol prior to leading Israel in throwing off the oppression of the Midianites. How different is that from the words of Jesus in the parable of the servants in Matthew 25? The angel of the Lord agreed to give Gideon a sign to prove he was from God. How different is that from the response Jesus gave to Peter’s request in Matthew 14? God’s patience, mercy, and power to act in his name are always the same, as real now as it was then. Application (What does it mean to me?): Is God calling you to turn away from an idol receiving more of your attention, energy, and resources than your relationship to him? What are you going to do about it? Where is God directing you to take a public stand for him in a world hostile to his truth?

A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions God is Our Rescuer Series, Lesson 21 Lesson Title: How to Search God’s Will

Take Home Point: If you search for God’s will, he will show you his way.

Warm-Up: Imagine that you became the owner of an old mansion surrounded by an acreage. After you purchased it at a bargain price, the previous owner came to you and said, “On this property is a hoard of diamonds that will allow you to be financially secure for the rest of your life. They are yours, and I know the location.” How would you respond? In disbelief, since you wonder why he would sell the property to you in the first place? But if you did believe him, then what? Would you just go your way? Oh, no! You would try to find those diamonds. You would ask him; you would look around carefully; you would watch to see where he went and what he did! Read: Judges 6:33-40 Observation (What happened?): What did God promise Gideon? In what ways did Gideon ask the Lord to show him a sign? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Since God had already promised delivery from Israel’s enemies, why do you think Gideon asked twice for a sign from God? Does Scripture indicate that God was angry with Gideon for asking? Insight: Sometimes I suspect that we think God plays hide-and-seek with his plan for us, but mostly hide, and we really have to pry it out of his reluctant hands. But consider an earthly example. If a child chooses to be disobedient, or disregards parental guidance, then he is not likely to act on what he hears even when he asks for help. And often when the parents do provide guidance, the child refuses it or cannot see it for his own hard heart. So it is with God and us. Listen to what the Bible says. “Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants” (Romans 12:2). This is so important that Jesus included it in his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:7-11). God is eager to show us, but we have to be willing to see it and act on it for his purposes, not ours. Application (What does it mean to me?): Think of some ways God has shown his will to you in the past. How did you know he was showing you his will? Where in your life are you seeking his will today? What are you doing to ask, watch, and obey?

Lesson Title: Your Strength Comes From the LordTake Home Point: God arms me with strength.

Warm-Up: In the months preceding January 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger was carefully prepared for launch. Computer systems were verified, the spacecraft and launch vehicle were checked out, ground and shuttle crews were trained, and the mission payload was placed in the cargo bay. Everything was ready. But as we all know, the shuttle was destroyed in an explosion during the launch because one component failed. It didn’t matter how strong all the other parts were or how complete the preparations; the crew and the ship were lost and the mission failed because of the weakness of one small part. Read: Judges 14-16 Observation (What happened?): Was Samson required to live a good and righteous life before he was used by the Lord to be judge of the Israelites for 20 years? Did Samson know the true source of his strength? Interpretation (What does it mean?): What was Samson’s real weakness in his heart? Why do you think God continued to bless Samson in spite of how he lived and sometimes used his strength? Insight: The temptation is to disparage and look down on Samson for what might have been. “If only he had focused his life and great strength on serving the Lord instead of himself, what might he have accomplished?” But like many characters in the Old Testament, Samson is not so unlike you or me, and his story opens our eyes to examples of God’s faithfulness and sovereignty. No matter what Samson did, God never forsook him, and God will never forsake us. How often do we let our own weakness get in the way of living for God? Yet God is faithful to us, and will restore fellowship with us every time we call on him in repentance (read 2 Timothy 2:11-13). Samson used his strength in vengeful ways, but for 20 years the Lord used him to lead Israel against the Philistines’ oppression. God is still sovereign, and he uses our failures to draw us to himself and to help others (read Genesis 50:20). How good and wise is the God of Samson, you, and me! Application (What does it mean to me?): What strength is God calling you to use for him and his people? What does the life of Samson tell you about the kind of people God can and does use?

A Shepherd’s Personal Devotions God is Our Rescuer Series, Lesson 25 Lesson Title: There Is Someone Who

Will Rescue You Take Home Point: You need a redeemer – Jesus.

Warm-Up: A friend of mine has a valuable guitar he has owned since he was in high school. At one time, he was unable to find a job and was short on cash. As much as he hated to do it, my friend took his guitar to a pawn shop for some badly needed money. Later, he told me about the ticket with which he could redeem his guitar. “I took care of that ticket as if my life depended on it,” he said. “I was so afraid someone would buy my guitar before I could buy it back for myself. That little scrap of paper represented my treasure, and I couldn’t wait to get it back.” Read: Ruth 1-4 Observation (What happened?): Why did Ruth return to Bethlehem with Naomi? What did Boaz do for Ruth, and indirectly, for Naomi as well? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Why did Boaz treat Ruth so well? Why do you think he responded so positively to Ruth asking him to be a kinsman-redeemer? What do you think God wanted to teach the Israelites by recording the account of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz in the Scriptures? Insight: What a contrast we have in last week’s lesson about Samson and this week’s lesson about Ruth! Samson was all about himself; Ruth was all about others. Nothing in the record indicates that Samson ruled Israel wisely. He lived violently, with a passion for satisfying his own desires before thinking of anyone else. He considered himself better than others and viewed revenge as his right and responsibility. Ruth demonstrated a sensitive heart by returning with Naomi and was obedient in following instructions for how to deal with Boaz. But she also showed strength of character in her hard work to support Naomi and her deference to Boaz as kinsman-redeemer. She was not a judge or ruler of Israel, but Ruth’s life was recorded in Scripture as an example of grace and humility, as someone God was pleased to please. And although she certainly did not know it at the time, as the great-grandmother of King David she was part of the lineage of Jesus, the Redeemer of all mankind. Application (What does it mean to me?): What price did Jesus pay for you to be freed? Have you accepted his redemption? Have you thanked him for it today? Pray for the children in your small group to understand how much God values them as individuals.

Lesson Title: Series Review Take Home Point: God is our rescuer. Trust him.

Warm-Up: A man sat on top of his house while floodwaters raged around him. He prayed that God would rescue him. A boat came by and the occupants encouraged him to come with them but he said, “God will rescue me.” So they left. Another boat approached, but he wouldn’t leave and gave the same answer. A short time later a helicopter hovered overhead and lowered a ladder, but he hollered out, “God will rescue me!” The waters continued to rise and eventually the man drowned. When he reached heaven he asked God, “Why didn’t you rescue me?” God answered, “I sent two boats and a helicopter! What were you waiting for?!” Read: Psalm 105; Psalm 106; Colossians 1:13-14 Observation (What happened?): From Psalm 105 and 106, why did God allow Israel to be oppressed by those around them? From the same Psalms, why did God rescue his people over and over? Interpretation (What does it mean?): Do you think the Israelites deserved to be rescued time after time? How did God want his people to respond to him? Insight: How many different names can you think of that are descriptive of Jesus in what he has done for us? One is in the Take Home Point – Rescuer. Some other names in Scripture are Redeemer, Savior, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and the Sacrifice of Atonement. What do all these names tell us? That Jesus did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He took on himself our sin and its payment (which is death, read Romans 6:23) and made it possible for us to stand before a holy God completely justified. What action can we take to make this possible for us? Nothing. Nothing we do can add to the work of Christ on the cross. He has done it all on our behalf. What we can do is make a choice, which is the second part of the Take Home Point. We can choose to trust him. Other words are believe, have faith, have confidence, depend on him, and rely on him. No matter how you say it, Jesus gives us everything when we deserve nothing. Our rescue really is by the grace of God! Application (What does it mean to me?): What are some similarities you have with the Israelites in what God did for them and how they reacted? How has God rescued you time after time? How do you respond to God’s discipline and his rescuing you?

Lesson Title: Oh, Give Thanks For He Is Good Take Home Point: We thank God for he is the

giver of all our blessings.

Warm-Up: Have you ever seen the pride and joy of a bride-to-be showing off her engagement ring? Is she excited simply because she is now the owner of an expensive gold band with a glittering gemstone on top? When someone asks, “Oh, it’s beautiful! Who gave it to you?”, how would you expect her to respond? Can you imagine her saying, “What do you mean? I just have it. It is beautiful and it’s mine!” Most folks would think it strange for her to not acknowledge the loving giver of that ring, and probably wonder how she could be so self-centered and ungrateful. Even if she privately thanks her fiance, it would be odd for her to not do it publicly as well. Read: Psalm 107:1 Observation (What happened?): Why are we to give thanks to the Lord? How long does his mercy last? Interpretation (What does it mean?): What do you think “the Lord is good” means? Since the Lord is always good and his mercy endures forever, when and where do you think we should give thanks to him? Insight: How do you feel when you do something good for someone, and he doesn’t recognize your kindness or express thanks? If you are like me, then once, twice, even a few times doesn’t really matter. But if it continues, then I begin to think that the person is not simply ungrateful, but is rejecting me. If none of my goodness (small, weak, or misguided though it may be) is worth acknowledging, then perhaps it is because I am not worth acknowledging. And that hurts. The point is, if that’s how you and I as sinful human beings react; imagine God’s heart when we are thankless. He knows our selfishness, and he knows our thanks will be imperfect. But he still delights to hear us thank him both alone and in public. Want a place to start? Read Colossians 1:12-14. Application (What does it mean to me?): Play the “Thanksgiving Alphabet” game. Starting with “A”, take turns going through the alphabet and think of something or someone for which you are thankful. If you do it with your family, remind each other that all these gifts are from God. You can also play this game by yourself, thanking God directly for all he is and does.
