THESE winter School Holidays at Melbourne Aquarium from June 30 until July 15 families will have the opportunity to visit the ‘Giants of the Reef’ and learn all about the biggest fish in Australia’s oceans!

Come face to face with reef fish bigger than sharks, featuring the 200kg Giant Grouper Mr G, the king of the Oceanarium.

Mr G is a Queensland Grouper with attitude. Whether being hand-fed by Melbourne Aquarium divers, or visiting his very own cleaning station to get his gills attended to by a team of cleaner fish, he certainly makes his presence felt.

The aquatic state emblem of Queensland, Giant Grouper are territorial animals commonly found cruising around the rocky coral caves and shipwrecks throughout the Great Barrier Reef.

Both giants of their species, a stunning, brightly-coloured Maori Wrasse and multi-patterned Potato Cod will also join Mr G in the Oceanarium just in time for the school holidays.

Check out the 11am and 2pm dive feeds for your chance to see our Giants of the Reef hand-fed by our divers. Feeling brave? Why not take the plunge and dive with the giants by undertaking a Shark Walker or Dive with the Sharks experience?

The Kid’s Play Area is a hive of activities this school holidays, with take-home art and crafts running each day between 10am and 4pm. Visitors can also pledge their commitment to keeping our oceans healthy on Melbourne Aquarium’s Pledge Wall. There is also the opportunity to join the Melbourne Aquarium team for a day as an Ocean Ranger! Meet Aquarists, help prepare the food for the animals and get an exclusive look behind the scenes.

‘Inspirational Illustration: The Lost Thing’SAM will be holding a viewing of Shaun Tan’s Academy Award winning animation The Lost Thing (2010) on Friday, July 6 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Kids aged 12 and up will have the chance to use their imagination and drawing skills after the film to create their own fantastic characters and settings. Cost is $15 per person or for Friends of SAM $12.

‘Art a’thon: Branching Out’On Wednesday, July 11 SAM is giving young artists a chance to get creative by drawing on current exhibitions featuring native forests and landscapes. From 10:30am to 12pm kids aged 5 to 8 will create their own versions of Australia’s iconic gum trees using terracotta clay, with all finished pieces fired to earthenware temperatures without using slip colours and kids aged 9 to 12 will have their chance to enjoy this fantastic experience from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Cost is at $15 per person and Friends of SAM $12 per person. ‘Vibrant Vessels’For those with a strong interest in textiles and a sense of adventure SAM is giving kids aged 15 and above the chance to enjoy making a decorative vessel (bowl, basket or vase), using wire, fabric, stitch, yarn and beads. The workshop will be held on Thursday, July 12 from 10:30am to 3:30pm and the cost is $55 per person or $50 for Friends of SAM. All materials are provided.

AFTER more than 20 years in the industry, much loved family run restaurant, Mustafa’s Kebabs is continuing to grow on their success with restaurants operating from two great locations in north and central Shepparton as well as a new store to be located on the freeway near Euroa alongside the petrol station. The stop-off eatery at Euroa is expected to be fully operational by September.

Carrying on the family tradition, Kaan Aktas (son of Mustafa’s Kebabs founder, Mustafa Aktas) will take on a dual role operating the north Shepparton and Euroa stores and eventually the central Shepparton store as well in preparation for his fathers retirement in the near future.

Kaan says the foundation of their success comes from a combination of quality local ingredients, a hard working family ethic and the consistency of their much loved traditional cuisine.

“My father has been operating Mustafa’s Kebabs since I was just a

small child and together with my sister, Hatice we’ve grown up in and around a culture of hard work and quality traditional cuisine. It’s become second nature to us, so it is fitting that we continue to grow and improve the Mustafa’s Kebabs brand as a family.”

Kaan with the help of his sister, Hatice operate the north Shepparton store and Mustafa together with his son-in-law, Gurhan Kartal operate the central Shepparton store.

Kaan said, “Between each of the stores we also employ upwards of 20 staff members at any one time, providing plenty of local employment opportunities.”

AS a part of their school holiday program of fun, the Riverside Plaza has plenty of creative and crafty ways to keep the kids entertained these school holidays.

During the first week of the school holidays there will be free badge making with the gang from local Shepparton based business, ‘happymaree’. From Monday, July 2 to Thursday, July 5 between 11am and 2pm, children will have the opportunity to design and create their very own badge to keep.

On Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 and again on Friday, July 13, Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15, between 11am and 2pm there will be demonstrations by the Woodturners, plus, kids will have the chance to get ‘hands-on’ and create their own piece of woodturned artistry. Entry for woodturning is by gold coin donations,

which will go towards local charities.During the second week of the school holidays on

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 11am and 2pm, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with free craft including Origami. Children can choose to make an Origami butterfly or bookmark, using their creativity and imagination to create an original piece to take home and keep.
