11 a.m. The Audubon Center of the North Woods will present “Raptors by Family.” All birds of prey have certain characteristics in common, but each group (falcons, owls, hawks, and eagles) has adaptations that make them unique. The audience will explore these unique adaptations through activities and by meeting 3 live raptors.
Booths & ActivitiesArchery – Try some target practice with MN Bowhunters.Eagle’s Nest Nature Store – T-shirts, hats, field guides, games, puzzles, sale items, and more. Be sure to buy your Duck Stamp today!Explore the Refuge on Your Own – Several service roads will be open to vehicles, 8 am - 3 pm.Friends of Sherburne NWR – Learn how the Friends support refuge educational programs—and how you can, too.Hospitality – Enjoy cookies, coffee, and cocoa courtesy of the Friends. A donation is suggested. Celebrate the 52nd birthday of the refuge with free cake at 12:30 pm. Habitat Management- See the tools and equipment the refuge uses to manage refuge lands.Food Trucks– 2 food trucks will be on site to serve a variety of food selections at a reasonable cost. Wildlife Discovery– Test your skill at wildlife identification with furs, feathers, and bones to help.Nature Journaling for Students – Staff from Elk River and Princeton Early Childhood Programs will help your child design a nature journal and show them how to use it nearby. Info will be available about their programs.Horse Drawn Wagon Rides – 10:30 am – 3:00 pm Take a wagon ride through the oak savanna to learn about this special habitat, its wildlife, and plants. Interpreted wagon rides start at about 10:30 am.

1 p.m. Gary Moss is a renowned wildlife artist who has spent his entire life fishing, hunting, and observing nature. His work is a reflection of his love and experiences with wildlife. Over the past thirty years his artwork has been frequently featured by Minnesota and national conservation groups. During his presentation he will tell the story of his career, his connection to Sherburne, and his process for creating the new murals in the lobby of the Learning Center.
Meet & Greet Live Animals– Meet and learnabout live animals from staff of the Audubon Center of the North Woods. Not offered during presentation (10:30am-12:30pm). See Spike the Porcupine!National Wild Turkey Federation – Jakes BB Shooting Range (Sand Dunes Gobblers) – Kids can try their hand at shooting in a safe environment.Kids’ Photography Contest Exhibit– View amazing photos taken at the refuge by kids in grades K-12.Pollinator Booth – Learn about the native pollinators that call Sherburne NWR home and why they are important to us. Enjoy a hands-on activity learning about native seeds.Roving Trail Interpreters - Go on a guided hike or ask our expert trail rovers about the refuge.Sherburne NWR Photo Club - Come learn about the Sherburne Photo Club, see a demo on macro photography techniques and the gear that club uses to get that perfect shot!Silent Auction – Support the Friends of Sherburne by bidding on many great donated items. Located in the Learning Center. Bidding closes at 2:30 pm.Turn-in-Poachers Wall of Shame Trailer –See the effects of poaching on Minnesota’s fish and game.Dip-Netting- Get your hands wet and explore the variety of invertebrates that live in the Schoolhouse Pool.Sherburne Soil & Water Conservation District -Learn more about SWCD, see their prairie roots display, and play pollinator plinko!
