History

The hamlet of Sheridan was originally named “Hammondsville”, after David Hammond, a local resident who settled the area prior to 1820. However, there was already a Hammondsville elsewhere in Ontario, and the hamlet had to change its name in order to have a local post office. A local blacksmith suggested “Sheridan”, after Irish playwright Richard B. Sheridan. The name Hammondsville is still remembered today in Hammond Road, which is still located east of Erin Mills Parkway.

The post office actually moved across current regional boundaries, depending upon which store it was located in. The only reminder of the hamlet of Sheridan left today is the Sheridan Cairn, located at the Winston Churchill/QEW interchange in Oakville. The marker was constructed in May 1986.

Sheridan was originally designated for residential, commercial, open space, golf course and industrial uses in the 1950s. Until 1965, lands in the Sheridan residential district were used primarily for farming, with a few scattered orchards and some residential development along Liruma Road. The data presented in this community profile is from a custom tabulation of 2001 Census of Canada data prepared for the City of Mississauga by Statistics Canada. It is calculated from 20% sample data. This data does not include the institutional population or the 4.0% census undercount.

Statistics Canada assigns data for an enumeration area to a single representation point. Where these representation points occurred in close proximity to the boundary of a planning district, data may have been inappropriately assigned to the planning districts. Some reassignments of data to planning districts were made to correct this situation. This occurred most often for residential areas adjacent to an industrial area. Adjustments were made to the Statistics Canada population data based on adjustments to the dwelling unit allocations. When dwelling unit reallocations were made, the associated population were also reallocated.
