Christmas Tree Lights Thank you so much to all those people who braved the rain to watch the lights being turned. Because of the rain the ceremony was much shorter than normal but everyone entered into the spirit. Thank you to Father Christmas for calling in to switch the lights on. Normally we have a bucket collection which helps to offset the costs of replacement light bulbs and repairs but because of the bad weather this did not happen. However, if you enjoy the lights and would like to make a contribution to the costs, donations can be dropped in at Penny Bean‟s home at Midway, Main Street, or given to any of the Parish Councillors. Thank you. Happy New Year to you all.

Sheriff Hutton Bowling Club We have an Extraordinary General Meeting in the clubhouse on Thursday, January 10 th at 7 pm. All members are urged to attend this very important meeting.

The first bingo evening of the New Year will be on Friday, January 18 th in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm. There will be the usual good prizes on offer – everybody welcome at this fun evening.

An early notification : The Jumblies are very kindly going to host a jumble sale for the club on February 16th. Please keep the date free and look out for your good quality jumble for us; we need your help!

Finally, a happy and healthy New Year to all.

Sheriff Hutton Mast Protest Group Thanks again to all those who supported the “Cream Tea” party at the Mast.

We have since seen our MP Mr John Greenway to press him on what action he proposes to take on our behalf. We can advise that he has agreed to take this up with Orange again and to raise the matter in the House of Commons.

We hope this will further our campaign for the relocation of the mast.

United Christian Churches Committee New Year Party Saturday 5th January 2008 Party invitations should have been delivered after Christmas. We do hope you‟ll be able to join us! We had record numbers attending last year so are hoping for another big turnout in 2008. If you have not received your invitation by 2nd January, please contact Jill Johnson.

After a warm welcome and a glass of sherry (or orange juice) guests are served a delicious tea followed by entertainment. There is a vegetable quiche available for vegetarians and fruit salad for diabetics. Any offers of help?

Offers of transport are also needed to help with ferrying guests to and from the party, and to deliver teas out to those unable to attend because of illness. Even one trip can make a big difference. Please contact Howard Maw.

Gifts of cakes and pastries for the party are always very much appreciated and can be left at the Hall between10am and 12noon, after 2pm, or with a committee member.

Message from the Jumblies A Happy and Prosperous New Year to you all.

The first Sunday in January is when we have one of our important services. It is a covenant service in which members of the Parish Church will join with us to re-affirm our commitment to follow the way of Christ. Wesley Guild 2008 This year we celebrate 40 years since the Re-formation of the Guild after a space of many years, including the Second World War. On Monday January 7th the speaker will be the Rev. Derek Bailey who has been an Army Chaplain for 35 years. Then on Monday, January 14th we welcome Bernard and Barbara Walker who have given us many programmes over recent years. This time it is called “A Picture Evening”. Again, a well known local person Robin Wardell, who has not only appeared on Television as a Gravedigger, but will tell us stories connected with his work on January 21st. Many people know Dr. Donaldson as a local Doctor, but we have invited him to the Guild to tell us of his Mission to Uganda. The date Monday January 28th. It is interesting to note most members are sitting ready for the starting time of 7.30pm – a good indication of the popularity of the Guild, an appreciation of the speakers and the fellowship enjoyed by all.

Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association On Wednesday 5th November 18 members went by coach to Northallerton for the day. The weather was better than had been forecast and a good amount of Christmas shopping was done. Thank you Bette for arranging this. On 12th December we had our Christmas dinner at the Highwayman. The menu was varied and the meal enjoyed by everyone. The committee had arranged a gift for each member – some Thorntons chocolates in a decorated bag. Our next meeting will be on 9th January when Keith Roberts will pass on some photographic tips that he has found useful.

Sheriff Hutton Archive Group Are you interested in local history? Do you have a computer and scanner? If the answer is yes to both of these questions then come along to the Village Hall at 7.00pm on 21 February 2008 and see if you can help out on a new local history project!

There is a vast amount of local interest documents currently stored in a variety of places such that they are essentially inaccessible – the formation of this group is intended to address this issue and to make available to any interested parties a CD or DVD ROM with as such of this information as possible. It is envisaged that this disc would be of use to the local school, to historians and to residents past and present.

The bulk of this archive was collected together by the late Mr Alan Farnaby and is in need of urgent attention – many of the documents are faded and it is vital that they be recorded as soon as possible.

Due to the sheer volume of documents to be scanned/copied the more people involved the better so please make the effort to come along and see if you are interested in helping out. If you are unable to attend but would like to be involved, please contact Alan Pitman at the village shop.

Playgroup News A HUGE thank you to everyone who supported playgroup‟s fundraising this Christmas! We started with a very successful Toy Fair, raising over £850. There were some really good quality toys and other items donated, thank you, and good old Father Christmas was ably supported by a great group of elves! We also sold over 600 tickets for our prize draw raffle (with over 30 prizes donated, thanks to the letter-writing skills of Anne Brown). Not bad when you remember we only have 33 children at playgroup! Add to this Lisa and Keith‟s Christmas Treasure Hunt around the village and we‟ve made a really positive impact on the playgroup‟s finances. A special thank you to Youthworks, who made a donation towards the cost of the hall hire at the Toy Fair as a gesture of support.

Mid Week Ramble Remember your new year resolution to take more exercise ? Well, here‟s a help. Meet the ramblers On Wednesday 30th January at 9.30 a.m. at the Village Hall car park. Walk about 4 – 5 miles and then a pub lunch at the end, or just a snack if that‟s what you fancy. You will be very welcome. Please come with suitable footwear and clothing for the weather.

Thanks Once again, many thanks to all of you who take your used stamps to the Post Office for Diabetic Research. I take them for sorting to a lady on Stockton Road who does this, and is very pleased to do it as she has Diabetes herself. Alan and Gilly – a big thank you for keeping the box. Janet. www.sheriffhutton.co.uk The Parish Council is pleased to announce that the Parish web site will be completed and up and running by January 1st 2008. We hope that this will be a useful source of information for all in the Village and beyond.

An abridged version of the Village News and the Parish Council minutes will be posted each month and the site will be kept up to date. If anyone in the Community feels that there are gaps or errors in the information please let us know and we will do our best to make corrections. The Webmaster will be Caryn Swartz who will link with Parish Councillors Penny Bean and Judith Calvert. We will be happy to receive updated news from any organisations which can be included on the website. There is a space for local businesses to advertise on the site and anyone interested should contact Penny Bean (878392). Those businesses that advertise in the Village news will automatically feature on the Village News page, however a separate advertisement can be included on the Business page at an extra cost if desired. The work on the site could not have been completed without the help of Bass Stewart, Shaun Conway and Caryn Swartz. The Parish Council would like to thank them for sharing their expertise and giving up their time to help. We hope that you will log onto www.sheriffhutton.co.uk Fieldnats Hope that everyone had a great Christmas break & wishing everyone a happy & healthy 2008. Our thanks goes to Richard Freer, one of our members, who shared the adventures he & his wife enjoyed travelling along the Amazon. Did you know that the Amazon at it‟s widest point is 38 miles across & at the deepest section, 500 feet. Anyone wishing to join the group is very welcome, for further information please call Melanie on 878711. Next meeting: Wed 9th Jan. Slides with Norman Lilley. Sheriff Hutton Primary School PTFA – Thank Yous! Firstly thank you to Penny Bean and the Jumblies for all the hard work put into the November jumble sale. The Jumblies together with the PTFA raised over £1400 which will go towards buying the much needed awnings for the front classrooms. Secondly thank you to all those that helped and supported our first annual Christmas Fair. The evening went extremely well; we had a wide range of stalls selling lots of lovely crafts and gifts, a mouth watering menu of food and a well stocked bar! We raised over £500 which will go towards new playground markings, study skills work shops for year 6 and school trips. We hope to repeat the event next year; if you have any suggestions for improvements please let Lara Willan know. Lastly, thank you to all the PTFA members who have helped throughout the last year. Many of us feel we live at the Village hall! However, the amount of money raised is well worth all the hard work, weekends given up, sleepless nights and tears! Look out for these two future events in 2008: Friday 8th Feb Valentine Ceilidh Sunday 8th June Scarecrow Trail Lara Willan (chair)

God With Us – “Wilderness and desert will sing joyously “Wilderness and desert will sing joyously, the badlands will celebrate and flower … God's resplendent glory, fully on display. God awesome, God majestic.” (Isaiah 35) When we come across hard times it‟s easy to ask God to help us get out of them, but I believe that it‟s sometimes right to stay where we feel it‟s hardest, because actually that‟s where God is. The writer of this bit of scripture states that we can still be in the desert place (a hard, lonely place) but it is God who makes that place hospitable, and more than that, it is God who renews us there! If you are in a hard place at the moment, be still, seek God and ask for his refreshing of your surroundings, and yourself. That is the meaning of Christmas – God with us, where we are, renewing us! Chris Ellis
