    MarcBrct Sherwood, dnughter of Hugh and Mary (Brooke) Sherwood,married William Hamblcton, who was born in 16B3 in Scotland and emigrated to Maryland. He died in 1725. The Hnmbletons ar e one of thefew families in Marylnnd who BtiU owned their original plantations inthe twentieth cenbjry. Margaret died in 1755.

    On November 21, 1703, the slorngc of tobacco for marketing andahlpplng wasat Daniel's land onlots lately Richard Gildart's(Emory, p. 22.), so evidently Danielwas acquiring more property.

    In 1763 he was appointed a commissioner to designate Talbot Countvlines. (Ibid. , p. HO.)

    On February 8. 1745, Danielmarried Elizabeth Rice, who was bornin Ta'.bol County. (Nat. Gen. Soc. Quarterly, Vol. XII, p. 27.) (Clark.Vol. Ill, p. 8.) Elizabeth may have been thedaughter of Ralph andCatherine (Sherwood) Rice, though no proof is established. If this ist rue, sh e would have been Daniel s first cousin.

    The wooing hadbeen goingon for some time, and had ripened intoan engagement; after which Samuel, with a view to improve his worldlycircumstances preparatory to assuming so responsible a relationship,wcQl down the river to workfor higher wages than couldbe obtained athome. He was accompanied by Samuel Cooley, and the two Samuelshired as deck hands on a steamboat bound for St. Louis. In April Cooleyreturned, expecting Nicholson soon. Cut weeks passed, and noSamuelcan.c. The month of Maythat period so congenial to the sentimentalLnfluenccs of the spirit of Cupid passed day by day and week by week,bringing no intelligence from the absent lover to his waiting and moretfcfji anxious bride-elect. Whether he had been drowned, murdered,died of flickncsH, or hod intentionally deserted her, were questions thattortured her to a degree that any rel iable inter igencc of the worst wouldhave afforded some relief.
