Technical Information Project Completion Date: July 30, 2012 Project Location: Albany, OR Size of Project: (cu. yds., sq. ft., etc.) : There were 222 cubic yards of concrete used for retaining walls and flatwork, including 53 cu yds of sand only mix with Davis color for pool deck and associated flatwork. 42.5 cu yds of pumped CDF were used around pool plumbing voids that were inaccessible to compaction equipment. Project also included 600 tons of 3/4"-0" backfill behind retaining walls. There were approximately 175 lineal feet of retaining wall, varying from 4 to 10 feet in height, with maximum footing dimensions of 9’ wide and 20” deep with a 12” x 24” key footing beneath. 9,400 pounds of rebar were used. Concrete Strength Requirements: 3,000/4,000 psi Describe unique mix designs: Sand only mix with a custom color for sand finish flatwork and wall caps.

Technical Information

Describe placement challenges or unique techniques: The task given to Knox Construction was to construct retaining walls and flatwork for an 18’x36’ swimming pool and spa. Approximately 10% of the pool and spa rested on undisturbed soil at the base of a 60% grade while the rest was built on engineered fill. Some of the challenges were:

• The proximity of the house to the property lines required all formwork and associated materials--including nearly 5 tons of rebar--to be hand carried 100 ft or more up a 30% grade to the work site.

• A septic tank drain field and site inaccessibility required the use of a 42 meter pump.

• Logistic issues required tandem transfer trucks to place the backfill material up to 100’ away.

• Controlled density fill (CDF) was used in areas inaccessible to compaction equipment and where 100% compaction was critical.

• Coordination with other trades required 9 separate color pours which made accurate color addition critical.

The removable stamped and sand finish pool cover panels as well as the sand finish wall and column caps were cast off site in forms built around Masonite templates. Polyurethane sealant was applied between all wall cap segments and pool coping joints. Sand used in the pool deck mix design was applied to the wet caulking, to ensure a perfect match with the sand finish pool deck.
