PrefaceThis booklet reports the second program of In-ternational Exchange Workshop of Architecture and Urban Design that began in 2012 between Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) Depart-ment of Engineering and Design, and Chung-Ang University (CAU) School of Architecture and Building Science to pursue vision of East Asian cities. The Workshop held the first program 2012 summer in Seoul and the second 2014 summer in Tokyo. SIT eight and CAU eight students worked together at SIT in Tokyo, August 21-29, 2014. We greatly appreciate collaboration each other and hopefully expect it deeper.

The 2014 workshop worked on Shibaura District neighboring SIT in Minato Ward between the CBD and waterfront of Tokyo. ‘Minato’ says a port in Japanese and Shiba-ura means area behind Shiba Distric. Its landscape is dynamic mixture of business development, high-rise condominiums, traditional streets and industrial sites in canal web. Asian cities changing find within the heart
such transitional areas potential to contribute ur-ban diversity. Four groups respective of SIT two and CAU two students found blocks adjacent to canals as their working site, completed concepts and master plans during Tokyo session August 21-29, and later developed schematic designs at home till the Internet presentation between Seoul and Tokyo on September 27.

Site Visit
What do you feel walking aside the sea? Our pro-posal is shopping promenades between towns and waterfront. A site is given in blocks in walk from JR Tamachi Station, edged as island by canals, and is more residential and business but less commercial. Canals are fenced from building estates along. We proposed five nodes adjacent bridges that connect the site and the outside. The first node is a port which boats stop at in the south end. The second is an information center
in the south end, that visitors pop in and start ex-ploring the town. The third is a plaza giving resi-dents and visitors open space in the west end to communicate. The fourth is a bike station in the north end, an in-land port in other words, that bi-cycles and pedestrians come in and go from the town. The last is a viewing point in the east end commanding the sea and releasing people’ s strain by the wind.

This city has many waterfront and harbor. And riverside view is also
good, but there is no activitys and people at the riverside. At the
waterfront, there are only dead space. People don't use the waterfront.
Psychical distance from the waterfront is so long for the people. There
is three point. Tamachi station, the road to habor axis and habor. We
consider with these things when we design this project. This city
historically also has fisher, but there are just office and residence. So no
activitys come from this separation. We focus on this disconnection. We
create new piers for the connection.
Before we renovation, there are one
residence and two office buildings.
We want some activitys at the
waterfront. Shopping street can
make some activitys. Woman and
kids that live at the residence will
use this shopping street. And also
we design piers. The program is
park for local people, fisher market,
restaurant.
We m a k e fo u r n e w p i e r s . We
consider ships circulations and
also people circulations. When we
design at the first time, piers are so
big and wide that can't work ships.
So we change pier. We make narrow
and long pier that don't block the
ship circulations. And also there are
many waterfront area. People can
enjoy the waterfront.
Shopping Street
Before this project, we should
decide user for this area. We decide
three user. First, Tamachi Station
user. Tamachi Station is near this
site area. So they can use this many
times. Second is residence people.
Different par t of is land, there
are huse residence that are lived
woman and kids. Third are ships.
Ships can use fisher market.

This diagram is under the main
four building that we renovated.
There are many shopping cube. The
size of cube is 10x10, 8x8, 6x6. We
use grid system for the plan. And
people can walk the street through
the shopping cube. People can use
this shopping street at the back
of the building. Because we make
some stairs and terraces.

Our site is a block in ten-minute walk from JR Tamachi Station, neighboring condominiums, of-fices, shopping streets and schools. We think this diversity of activities should penetrate the block into the backside canal, and propose to renovate buildings in the block and add pedestrian piers taking people along the canal. Lower floors of the buildings convert to public space enabling ac-cess and view from the street to the canal. The
public space takes visitors to the piers facilitated with fisherman markets and restaurants along the board walkway. The section is worked out so in detail through the street, block, piers and the canal that people feel there both the town and waterfront. The piers remind of the old days as fishermen village in Shibaura District and provide new attraction of waterfront as well.

DESIGN RULEWe took out three of the elements from the animal. Then, design the whole thing with them.
HOW ABOUT THIS ?
RUN LIKE DOG.
FLY LIKE BIRD.
SWIM LIKE FISH.
Water is the origin of life. The addition of the program with an element ofanimal on this site is close to such water, we willchange the space of rest Lively this space.
someone‛ s rest = sleep
someone‛ s rest = reading
someone‛ s rest = playing
someone‛ s rest = talking
WAY TO RESTThere are a lot of different ways in how to rest.We select only red area.
By starting from the building of the three , it will transmute the surroundingbuildings into space of the rest.It is going to be landscape, such as photo below in the future.

Our scheme comes from Dreaming Butterfly, a Chinese tale that nobody may know whether he looks up at a butterfly flying above or he is a flying butterfly looking down at a man lying on the bench. The site is a canal and the buildings along. The canal is so closed by the buildings like wall that few people visit or walk despite brilliant sunlight and fresh air. Our goal is to create a sort of aerial quarter connecting the canal and build-ings. The first step is to find possible open spaces
in the buildings in lower floors accessible from the canal. The second step is to bridge the open space so that people walk across the canal and buildings. The third step is to set public use in the open spaces. The aerial open spaces attract birds, small animals and insects as well as people with confortable sunshine and breeze, and thus induce dreaming as if flying butterfly.

THERE IS NO WAY GO THROUGH THIS AREA NOW. TO MAKE BLEU GARDEN ,PEOPLE HAVE NEED OF A NEW ACCESS.SO, JUST 1 AND 2 FLOOR BECOME TO VOID. THEN PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO PASS THROUGH THIS AREA.AND IT MAKE MORE ACTIVITY. VARIOUS PEOPLE BECOME TO COME AROUND HERE.ACCORDINGLY, I PLAN NEW FUNCTION EACH FLOOR WHILE THINKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO COME HERE.

Presentation
Canals in Shibaura District have contributed to both keeping fishery and urban development, and set industrial sites and buildings along. Recent buildings face streets and leave canals behind, and thus reduce public access to the canals. The District fails to demonstrate its original livability of waterfront. Our proposal is Blue Garden, convert-ing warehouses along canals to civic use attract-ing residents and visitors to waterfront area. Blue symbolizes waterfront and Garden indicates pub-
lic space. Our site is a node of canal web articu-lated by roads and a railway, and surrounded by industrial, commercial and residential estates. We designed three places in the site. Deck Garden is a shopping promenade on the warehouse first floor in the east. Beach Garden is a park along the shore in the north. Stair Garden consists of containers inserted into the warehouse. This tri-angle raises potential of the canal and provokes action in the waterfront.
