Filling the Fuel TankMixing FuelCAUTION!
Some gasolines contain alcohol asan oxygenate! Oxygenated fuelsmay cause increased operatingtemperatures. Under certainconditions, alcohol-based fuelsmay also reduce the lubricatingqualities of some mixing oils.Never use any fuel containingmore than 10% alcohol by volume!Generic oils and some outboardmotor oils may not be intended foruse in high-performance air cooled2-cycle engines, and should neverbe used in your Shindaiwa engine!
CAUTION!
This engine is designed to operateon a 50:1 mixture consisting ofunleaded gasoline and a Premium2-cycle mixing oil only. Use ofNon-approved mixing oils can leadto excessive maintenance costsand/or engine damage.
■ Use only fresh, clean unleadedgasoline with a pump octane ratingof 87 or higher.
■ Mix gasoline with 50:1 ShindaiwaPremium 2-cycle mixing oil or withan equivalent high quality 2-cyclemixing oil.
Example of 50:1 mixing quantites:■ 1 gallon of gasoline to 2.6 oz.
mixing oil.■ 5 litres of gasoline to 100 ml.
mixing oil.
IMPORTANT!
Mix only enough fuel for your immedi-ate needs! If fuel must be storedlonger than 30 days and ShindaiwaOne oil with fuel stabilizer is notused, it should first be treated with afuel stabilizer such as StaBil™.
WARNING!
Minimize the risk of fire!
■ Stop the engine before refuel-ing.
■ Always allow the unit to coolbefore refueling!
■ Wipe all spilled fuel and movethe unit at least 10 feet (3meters) from the fueling pointbefore restarting!
■ Never smoke or light any firesnear the unit or fuels!
■ Never place any flammablematerial near the enginemuffler!
■ Never operate the enginewithout the muffler and sparkarrester in place and properlyfunctioning!
■ Never operate this hedgetrimmer if fuel system compo-nents are damaged or areleaking!

To reduce fire hazard, keep theengine and muffler free of debris, leaves, or excessive grease.
■ Lubricate the cutters with oil beforeuse, and after refueling.See Figure 18.
■ Check the cutters for damage orimproper adjustment, and adjust orreplace as necessary.See page 21.
■ Carefully remove any accumulationsof dirt or debris from the muffler andfuel tank. Dirt build-up in these areascan lead to engine overheating, fire,or premature wear. See Figure 19.
■ Clean any debris or dirt from thehedge trimmer cutter blades.Lubricate the blades before use andafter refueling. Check the cutters fordamage or incorrect adjustment.
■ Check for loose or missing screws orcomponents. Make sure the cutterattachment is securely fastened.
■ Check the entire unit for leakingfuel or grease.

WARNING!
Never operate this machine with adamaged or missing muffler orspark arrester! Operating withmissing or damaged exhaustcomponents is a fire hazard, andmay also damage your hearing.
■ Hard starting or a gradual loss ofperformance can be caused bycarbon deposits lodged in themuffler’s spark arrester screen.Remove the screen from themuffler with the point of a smallpliers. NOTE:Your Shindaiwa warranty does notinclude coverage for damage causedby stale or contaminated fuels.
■ Thoroughly clean the exterior ofthe machine.
■ Remove all clippings and otherdebris from the cylinder fins andother components (as previouslydescribed under DailyMaintenance).
■ Drain all unused fuel from the fueltank, and then clear the carburetorand fuel lines by running thetrimmer until it stops from lack offuel.
IMPORTANT!
All stored fuel should be stabilizedwith fuel stabilizer such as STA-BIL™
■ Remove the spark plug, and pourabout 1/4 ounce of 2-cycle mixingoil into the cylinder through thespark plug hole. Before reinstallingthe spark plug, slowly pull therecoil starter 2–3 times to distributethe oil over the cylinder wall.
■ Service the air cleaner element aspreviously described in the dailymaintenance section of this manual.
■ Repair or replace any damagedcomponents as required, and thenstore the unit in a clean, dry, anddust-free area.

WARNING!
The cutter blades are very sharp!Always wear gloves when workingaround the cutter assembly!
CAUTION!
Operating the hedge trimmer withworn or improperly adjustedcutters will reduce cutter perfor-mance and may also damage thisunit.
Cutter performance of this unitdepends in great measure on cutterblade clearance. Properly adjustedblades will oscillate freely yet helpprevent binding of cut materialbetween blades. Adjust blades asfollows (Figure 26):
1. Loosen all blade locknuts at leastone full turn.
2. Tighten each blade shoulder boltfirmly, and then loosen the shoul-der bolts 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
3. Working from the gearcase end, lock each bolt in place by firmlytightening its locknut whilepreventing the shoulder bolt fromturning.
When shoulder bolt adjustment iscorrect, there should be a gap of0.025–0.050 mm between the cutterblades and the flat washers, and theflat washer beneath each bolt headshould turn freely.
