1. Welcome to Shine A Light Support Service! We would like to introduce our services to you: We support families affected by childhood cancer from diagnosis for as long as they need us. We do this in different ways: Our services include: » Open house drop in sessions » Parent and toddler groups » Teen social group » Activity days and day trips » Home visits » Provision of refreshments for the paediatric oncology clinic at UHCW » Activity and therapy sessions for parents at our family centre in the centre of Coventry We are always looking for new families to support and our personal, confidential initial chat will explain in more detail how we help the whole family. We are able to help these families thanks to donations, volunteers, sponsors and fundraising. If you would like to help us there are different ways in which individuals, groups and associations, schools and education establishments, corporate and organisations can help our cause:

VOLUNTEER SPONSOR DONATE

FUNDRAISE CHARITY PARTNERSHIP EVENTS

Full details of these are included in our pack – and are available to download from our web site. Here are 3 reasons to support Shine A Light Services: 1. We are a local charity – the help we provide helps families in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

2. Thankfully 8 out of 10 children now survive cancer but it remains the leading cause of death from a

single disease among children and young people in the UK, and often leaves survivors with other health conditions which will affect them for the rest of their lives. * Our services are designed to support children and young people between the ages of 0-24 and their parents and siblings, throughout this devastating and life changing experience. We will offer support to families from the date of diagnosis for as long as they need us.

3. The services we provide enable families to stick together through the tough times and meet other families in similar positions with whom they can become friends and offer mutual support.

important funds so if you would like to hold an event with our support please get in touch. What do you receive in return? There are many ways in which you can be rewarded for helping us – if you volunteer you can learn new skills, meet new people and get real job satisfaction when you accomplish tasks that are helping us to help the families. From a corporate point of view volunteering offers great team building and motivational opportunities too. When you donate or fundraise for us we support you and ensure that you know how the funds raised are used and we will help in any way that we can to ensure that this is easy for you to do. Volunteers make a massive difference to people and communities all over the UK. Shine A Light volunteers help to keep our centre running 5 days a week and are also involved in outreach activities. They help us to launch and manage new projects, they are involved in the community and fundraising events, they help to keep things running smoothly with admin and book-keeping skills and they keep our centre clean and well maintained.

Volunteer with your colleagues, friends, and family or on your own to meet new people….. You can volunteer regularly, or at events or as a one-off. We will ensure that you have a worthwhile experience and achieve during your time with us.

Here are some great reasons to volunteer for Shine A Light:

Employability – volunteering looks great on your CV and you can learn new skills References – It can be a great way of getting up to date references and fill in gaps in your work experience New Skills – what a great way to try something you have never done before? You may want to change direction and this experience can give you just the opportunity to test out lots of different roles for free! Training – we offer training to our volunteers and run our own in-house training courses to help you to make the most of volunteering which in turn helps the families we support. Here’s what our volunteers have to say:

6

“I became unemployed and I found it hard to even get an interview – volunteering at Shine A Light has given me a reason to get up and out of the house because I know I am making a difference by my actions. It has also taught me that it is a great way of improving my self confidence and learning new skills. One of the really great benefits is the lovely people I have met and who I have enjoyed volunteering with. Even when I get a job I will still volunteer for Shine A Light as it has been a pleasure to offer my services to this worthwhile cause and a bonus to feel more positive and part of a team.” “Volunteering typically means giving up your free time to a charity but volunteering at Shine A Light doesn't feel as if you are giving up anything at all. Working with Sam, Marie and the team is an absolute pleasure and everyone is united towards one goal of ensuring the charity is helping as many families as possible through the difficult time they face before, during and after their fight with cancer. Seeing those happy smiles is what makes volunteering at Shine A Light worth every second.” So what type of volunteering roles are we looking to fill? There is lots of support available for willing volunteers! You can volunteer a few hours a week, a day a week, at events, on an ad hoc basis or more often. Once you apply to volunteer we will hold an interview and discuss how we can work together. We have full policies and procedures in place and the facility to carry out DBS checks for all roles that require this. We also pay reasonable expenses and offer induction, training and we can give you references for regular volunteers too. Take a look at the roles and if you have something different to offer that’s not on the list we would love to hear from you. Volunteering can take place in our centre in Coventry, at events and you could be working with families affected by childhood cancer if you wish, or in more behind the scenes roles.

7. Become a Charity Partner of Shine A Light Support Service!

Our corporate partners are an important part of our work and we recognise that there are advantages on both sides. We are always looking for companies and organisations who want to make a difference to people’s lives by choosing us as their Charity Partner. At Shine A Light we don’t just help the child who is suffering from cancer, we help the whole family and our partners play a crucial part in this.

We are aware that the impact of having a child with cancer hits the whole family, from the shock of diagnosis, for many years past the end of treatment. Impact is both financial and emotional and part of our ethos is recognition of the whole family unit in every area of support we offer.

We believe this is important to the ongoing care needed and we feel that by helping the family as a whole we are meeting needs that cannot be currently met by other service providers including the NHS.

Transforming lives Your contribution matters to us and our service users. We can demonstrate the impact of your partnership, how it is helping to transform lives, by reporting on what a huge difference you will make to the children we support.

Flexible, balanced partnerships We understand that for you to support us we have to be able to work together in a mutually beneficial way. We welcome the opportunity to listen to what you would like to achieve as a partner and how you would like to make a difference. We will then offer suggestions of support and ways in which we can help you to meet your goals, thus helping our families. Together we can achieve and make a difference to the lives of families with children with cancer. Contact us now for an informal discussion!

Employee engagement By involving your employees in a partnership with us, you can develop more cohesive teams through team building, boost staff morale and increase staff retention. We want to help you to ensure that your company profile is heightened and that your company is a desirable place to work, thus attracting good candidates for roles you may wish to fill. We can offer some great ideas and we have lots of contacts and we can introduce you to companies and organisations that manage teambuilding days with a difference.

Strategic and Operational Level We want to create a win-win situation for our partners and ourselves, and we do this through working with you at a Strategic level to achieve your goals and also at operational level, where we can work with you and your staff to make a difference to the families that we support. Brand values and collaboration Sharing values and understanding how we can collaborate to our mutual benefit will ensure that we are delivering change that will impact those who need it most. So how can we work together? Here are some general suggestions but please feel free to discuss your own ideas with us as we are always looking for new and improved ways of working with our partners

Please note that Tourist/ Visitor visas and Student Visitor visas (usually students visiting for 6 months or less) do not allow people to volunteer

I am a refugee People who have refugee status or have exceptional leave to remain are allowed to do any type of work, including voluntary work. Do I need to be DBS checked?

This will depend on the volunteer role that you are looking to do. If you are working with children or vulnerable adults, you can expect to be asked to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Will I be trained?

Depending upon the role you will receive training – we have set methods and procedures for various roles and these will be explained to you and a copy of the procedure given to you to help. You will always be with someone that can help and we would never expect you to feel uncomfortable in any role.

Will I receive a reference?
