henrietta labouchere was born in Field Dalling, North Norfolk in 1984. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art (Painting) from Chelsea College of Art and currently lives and works in Norfolk.

Since her days at college, Labouchere has been interested in paint – the way it handles and flows on the panel. Her figures are boldly sketched, the sum of several layers of colour, each painstakingly applied. Her compositions are built up slowly, with nascent ideas and early missteps absorbed into the final panel; a key part of the historical evolution of the painting.

Labouchere’s reading of Modernist literature, including J. D. Salinger, Carson McCullers, W. G. Sebald (a declared source of inspiration), sparked her fondness for lonely, dislocated figures. Sometimes the inspiration is self-evident – her last exhibition, “For Esmé with Love and Squalor” owes its title to a collection of short stories by J. D. Salinger – however, in most cases, Labouchere simply strives to create compositions that radiate with the same atmosphere. Alongside this literary inspiration, she a tireless researcher of photographic archives, searching for the flavour and details of an age she revives with each and every brushstroke.

Her distinctive use of colour expresses her appreciation of and kinship with a range of practitioners, from Piero della Francesca through to Cy Twombly and Anselm Kiefer. The surface of her works - often rough and opaque - implies, through texture, the sense that her work is already historical, belonging to a bygone era.

Brimming with both nostalgia and empathy, Labouchere’s work is a profound testimony to these ghosts of a recent past.

Christopher Thompson born | 1969nationality | British

christopher thompson was born in Grimsby in 1969 and trained at The Royal Academy Schools. Thompson’s paintings originate as much from the artists own ideas and thoughts as they are drawn from glimpses of his own life and the world around him. Working from finely observed portrait studies, Thompson manipulates these ‘truths’ with imagined memories appropriated from elsewhere, weaving an enigmatic fiction that takes on a new reality on canvas. Captured in his delicate painterly technique and an often subdued palette, Thompson’s compositions portray the human drama inherent in gestures, glances and emotions. In combining his imagined sources with observational accuracy, his work traverses the divide between the real and the fictitious – one step removed from reality, yet entirely authentic. His work expresses a fascination with togetherness and individuality, with what is spoken and unspoken. Sometimes his individuals appear lonely and detached - lost in their own solipsistic thoughts - in others his figures are relational and interacting, expressive and aware of one another. In each composition, Thompson draws the viewer into the world he has created; our dialogue with his characters is as much a part of the unfolding story as the canvas itself.

louise gibson was born in Edinburgh in 1985, where she continues to live and work. She graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2009.

Gibson works primarily with industrial polyester resin, combining found objects with sculpted casts to create intricate, innovative pieces.

Gibson constructs the moulds for her work herself, individually honing the resin recipe for each specific piece, in order to create the right tone, colour and texture.

The ongoing preoccupation of Gibson’s work is the relationship between people’s behaviour and their belongings; each of her sculptures is a testament to human interaction - both with each another and with the environment.

Her compositions betray her affection for discarded materials, ‘recycling’ objects to give them a second – more insightful – lease of life.

Her newest sculptures work with specifically-owned objects to explore themes of possession and permanence, in an attempt to convey something of the identity of their subjects.

A specialist in site-specific and interactive projects, she was previously commissioned to create a collection of pieces inspired by the reconstruction and restoration of one of Scotland’s largest historic galleries, The Edinburgh Portrait Gallery.

Each of Gibson’s works are unique; hewn from a larger whole, the cross-sections are original, without the possibility of duplication. After precise ‘slicing’ at a local sawmill, Gibson grinds and polishes the surface with industrial strength materials to achieve the required finish.

alberto zamboni was born in 1971 in Bologna, where he continues to live and work today. Born into a respected family of artists, his creative inheritance was further nurtured by the vibrant artistic environment of his home city – the birthplace of Annibale, Agostino Carracci and Giorgio Morandi.

As well as the countless artists who have lived and worked in Bologna over the centuries, Zamboni’s work is buoyed by references to history’s most innovative practitioners. The skilful juxtaposition of light and shadow in Zamboni’s creations is reminiscent of Whistler’s hazy views of the river Thames and the nocturnal seascapes of Turner. Yet literature also plays a pivotal role in Zamboni’s creative process - especially authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville and George Simenon. Zamboni is fascinated by tales of adventure and the great unknown, and strives to capture this sense of odyssey within his misty landscapes.

The current body of works is a summa of his inspirations. Uninterested in the representation of reality per se; the human figure becomes the pretext to create an oneiric depiction of reality, imagined through the prism of his remembrances.

Zamboni tackles the canvas with a simple yet subtle technique; the canvas is applied directly with layers of oil, which is then carefully diluted. The subjects are lightly traced on the canvas, conferring a distinctive non-finito touch, further enhanced by the lack of a final varnish.

Zamboni has participated in a number of international art fairs and competitions, such as the prestigious Premio Cairo and the 2011 Venice Biennale. His paintings, aside from being privately collected, feature in some of the most prominent Italian corporate collections including Unicredit Bank.
