The scalp plays important roles: physical barrier, immunological protection, thermal

insulation, oils secretion, perspiration, among others. The scalp skin is highly vascularized, with

great density of glands: sebaceous glands, whose function is to lubricate and waterproofing

the scalp and the hair, leaving them soft, flexible and shiny, and the sweat glands which in turn

give rise to the sweat that ensures the thermal balance and removes toxins from the cellular

metabolism.

Each hair originates in a hair follicle, which is composed of a hair bulb (where the new hair

comes from), a sebaceous gland and a small muscular erector, who directs the hair shaft to

stand and also causes the chills on the skin. Environment factors such as pollution and solar

radiation combined with external aggression as chemical and thermal procedures, in addition

to emotional changes, hormonal, nutritional may influence the proper functioning of the

scalp glands, changing its homeostasis. In addition, an ineffective cleaning and the excess

The hair fiber can be divided into two parts: root and shaft. The shaft is the portion that emerges

from the scalp and protrudes from the surface of the skin. It features complex composition

and contains mainly α-keratin that may correspond to 65 to 95% of its mass. The shaft of the

hair fiber is responsible for giving shine, body and texture to the hair. Features three main

structures: cuticle, cortex and medulla, from the outside to the inside, respectively.

The hair plays an important role in the physical appearance of people and in self-confidence. It

is known that human hair is easily damaged by external agents and heat, physical and chemical

treatments such as sunlight, heating, brushing, bleaching, staining among others. This leads

to a premature aging of the hair. In addition, there is also the chronological aging, which

The hair color is determined by the amount and size of the Melaning

granules, the pigment content present in the cortex of the hair. The

hair dye is intended to change the natural hair color and involves

the use of chemicals capable of removing, replacing, or concealing

the melanin found naturally inside of the hair. The coloring

procedure may result in damage because the oxidant hair dyes

provide excessive opening of the cuticle, aiming to optimize the

absorption of colors by cortex, and as a result of this mechanism,

there is a decrease in softness, brightness and combing,

resulting in dry, harsh and brittle hair. In extreme cases, the hair

Bleaching is a chemical process that changes the content of melanin

naturally present in the cortex of the hair fiber. But, the melanin is

not the only substance degraded by alkaline pH and the mixture

of hydrogen peroxide; many other damages can be caused by

this process because the reaction of oxidation also breaks some

disulfide bonds within the keratin, oxidize amino acids and

destroy around 15 to 45% of the hair cysteine.

All these changes cause the weakening of fiber structure

and cause damage in the hair, which may lead to its fall.

Furthermore, the constant visits to salons for finishing touch-

ups also makes the hair, damaged, fragile and brittle.

The hair has different features, varying according to the ethnic group and the genetics

of each individual. The racial and individual variations determine the pattern of growth

and also the shape and texture of the hair. According to the curvature of the hair, they

can be straight, wavy or curly. But they all have a basic chemical composition, the

keratin. What varies is the sequence of amino acids that make up this protein and its

distribution in the fiber.

STRAIGHT HAIR

It is typical of Mongolian, Eastern, Eskimo and

indigenous ethnic groups. The follicle is in

upright position and so the hair is straight and

smooth when leaving the scalp. It is round in

cross-section with a regular and consistent

diameter along the hair.

Keratin is distributed evenly across the hair.

Straight hair usually allow a greater flow of oil

produced in the scalp to the ends, allowing

the formation of a more lipid film, more

uniform throughout the length of the fiber

and, consequently, a smaller loss of water by

evaporation, keeping the hair hydrated for a

longer time.

The cylindrical hair is less conducive to the

formation of nodes and less susceptible to

damage. In addition, the smooth surface of

the hair reflects more easily to light, making

hair naturally shiny.

WAVY HAIR

It is typical of Caucasians, which may be found

in different ethnic groups. In the transversal

cut the hair is oval in shape and the keratin

is distributed irregularly, focusing more on

some ends. It has the straight surface, but

with central curvature in the form of “S” and

so usually grow straight in the root and form

clusters along the hair.

The lower fluidity of oiliness on the scalp

along the fiber causes the formation of lipid

film. This film has more difficulty in reaching

the tip-ends, which makes the curly hair more

fragile, with drier tip-ends.

Tend to be drier and more frizzy than the

straight hair and more prone to mechanical

breakdown. When the curly hair is healthy,

the curls are well defined and the hair more

malleable, hydrated and with brightness.

FRIZZY / AFRO HAIR

It is more common in black ethnicities. In the

transversal cut features irregular diameter,

thicker in some parts and thinner in others

with uneven distribution of keratin. Its hair

has curvature extremely sharp and grow

spiraled from the root. This characteristic

makes it more difficult for distribution of

natural oils from the scalp along the hair

shaft, leaving them, as a consequence, much

more dry.

For this reason, it is more difficult to comb and

more prone to formation of nodes, leaving

them more fragile and brittle. The surface

of the frizzy hair does not reflect light, thus

gets a dry and opaque appearance. Whereas

the natural characteristics of the frizzy hair,

as well as the effects of external factors, it

needs specific care that provides protection,

hydration, nourishment and helps controlling

the volume and let the curls more beautiful

and defined.
