When The Mariners’ Museum needed to X-ray two historic cannons – one brass and one iron – and a whale harpoon, Jeanne Willoz-Egnor, the museum’s director of Collections Management, contacted Newport News Shipbuilding for help. The brass cannon – which can be traced to a 19th-century member of the French royal family – had an item stuck in its breach, or the thickest rear section of its barrel. Willoz-Egnor wanted to identify the item to see if it could be removed without causing damage. The iron cannon was inspected for defects because museum personnel wanted to ensure it could be safely fired. The whale harpoon was inspected to see if it contained any internal objects of interest.

Shipbuilders from NNS’ Nondestructive Test Engineering and Inspection departments were eager to perform computed radiography on the cannons and harpoon using the shipyard’s Linitron, a linear accelerator and high-energy X-ray machine. The John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Program recently recognized three individuals for demonstrating leadership with the 2017 Safety Improvement Program.

CVN 79 Production Director Joe Dvorak and Top Side Construction Director Geoff Hummel presented X11 Fitter Bill Scillath, X91 Construction Supervisor Jackie King-Gross and X31 Foreman Michael Brasseaux with certificates of appreciation and thanked each shipbuilder for stepping up as leaders of safety improvement.

“Throughout the year, these individuals have demonstrated a high level of passion and enthusiasm for improving safety in their work areas,” Dvorak said.

Scillath was recognized for his ladder stability improvement idea – the program's 175th approved idea for the year. King-Gross was recognized for submitting a total of 13 improvement ideas throughout the year identifying hazards related to fire prevention and walking/working surfaces. Brasseaux was recognized for implementing two ideas that produced significant man-hour savings and a reduction in injuries.

“Our team had fun doing this work, and we take pride in supporting preservation of items considered important to naval history,” said John Bosco (O37), who led the NNS team. Other shipbuilders who took part include Dean Lavinder (O37), Randall Hall (O37), Mike Bryant (O38), Kevin Walker (O38) and Donna Blankenship (O38).

The team was able to provide crisp, detailed images, allowing museum staff to devise a plan to remove the item stuck in the brass cannon’s breach without damage. Results showed the iron cannon contained defects, so museum staff will have to weigh the risks of firing it. The whale harpoon images show that it contains three separate threaded pieces consisting of two cylinders with a threaded-on sharp tip for penetrating a whale. The cylinders were designed to be packed with gun powder.

“The images you guys provided were really great,” Willoz-Egnor told the shipbuilders who worked on the project. This isn’t the first time NNS has pitched in to help the museum. For the past two decades, the shipyard has periodically used its Linitron to X-ray objects recovered from USS Monitor, a Civil War-era ironclad warship.

“I continue to be amazed by the giving spirit of our shipbuilders. They work long, hard hours – giving the shipyard 100 percent – and they still find the time in their days and their hearts to give 100 percent to the community,” said NNS President Jennifer Boykin. “When our community succeeds, we all succeed, and I could not be more proud of the powerful partnership we share with the United Way.”

Shipbuilders’ collective contributions play a significant role in providing support for local citizens and benefit more than 190 United Way partner organizations dedicated to helping people.

CVN 79 Program Safety Improvement Leaders Recognized

“What I love most about the Safety Improvement Program is the employee involvement in identifying and implementing improvements to their work environment," said Dru Branche, Environmental Health and Safety director. "The ideas are creative and employees are always justifiably proud of what they have accomplished and this Program is foundational to achieving great results across the company.”

With a new year and a new safety improvement goal, the CVN 79 Program plans to continue to identify employees that are stepping up and making a difference in their work areas to keep shipbuilders safe.

AROUND THE YARD

Employee Development Dale Carnegie Courses OfferedNewport News Shipbuilding has added two Dale Carnegie courses to its employee development curriculum to help employees take their performance to the next level. Classes will be taught by Dale Carnegie professionals at Hampton, Newport News and Virginia Beach locations. The courses are eligible for college credit and reimbursable through the NNS Education Assistance Program.

The two-day “High Impact Presentations” class will be useful to any employee who speaks in front of groups. Class participants will learn how to develop a central theme, structure the presentations, persuade the audience with supporting facts and examples and lead effective question and answer sessions.

The “Effective Communications and Human Relations” course teaches students how to strengthen interpersonal relations, manage stress and handle fast-changing workplace conditions. The class will meet one evening per week for eight consecutive weeks.

For class schedules and other details, visit the O44 Career & Professional Development intranet site on MyNNS or contact Wade Powell at (757) 536-8003.

Plant Engineering Gives BackNewport News Shipbuilding’s Plant Engineering Department (O41) marked its 100th anniversary in 2017 with a number of celebratory and fundraising events to support the community. The department’s last event of the year, a holiday luncheon held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, was no different.

Shipbuilders partnered with the Community Action Network, a 501(c)(3) group that works to end hunger and homelessness in Newport News by providing counseling, training, housing, transportation and employment. Leftover food from the holiday luncheon was donated, providing a hearty meal for those in need. Shipbuilders also provided a monetary donation in support of the Community Action Network’s mission of reducing poverty.

The Rev. Bruce D. Cheney Sr., executive director of the Community Action Network, thanked to the Facilities & Plant Engineering Directors Jim O'Brien and Adam Zydron, longtime volunteer and AMSEC manager Stephen Kortz, and the O41 Engagement Leaders – Taylor Amponin, John Chilbert, Kevin Crowder, Jessica Greulich, Omayra Orama, Megan Pym, Lauryn Redd, Danyelle Saunders, Dana West and Aaron Zurfluh.

“This was a great opportunity for us to enjoy each other’s company while also supporting the community,” said Amponin, who leads the engagement team. “We’re looking forward to more opportunities to partner and make a difference in our community.”

The Plant Engineering Department (O41) partnered with a nonprofit group that is working to reduce poverty.

January 22, 2018 Dear Shipbuilders: Congratulations! I could not be more proud to announce that in 2017, Newport News Shipbuilding achieved its safest year in recorded history. This safety milestone is thanks to the hard work and perseverance of ALL shipbuilders. This accomplishment underscores your strong commitment to your co-workers and to our health and safety programs. A good example of this is our Safety Improvements Program. We had a goal to make 750 improvements last year, and we not only met this challenge, we surpassed it and implemented 1,178 improvements—all of which were employees’ ideas to improve the worksite experience. Your engagement and continued focus on safety has helped us create a culture that is paramount to our success, and I applaud your hard work. As we kick off 2018, I encourage you to help us find new ways to continue this positive trend. Speak up if something isn’t working, and look for innovative, safer solutions in your areas. Let’s continue to work together to ensure the safety of all shipbuilders. All the best, Jennifer Boykin President Newport News Shipbuilding
