Lesson Goal: The purpose of this lesson is to teach the children that they should give God the credit for the good things they do.Main Point: I Will Give God The Credit For The Good Things I Do!Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 4:7b “What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?” (NLT)

Giving God the credit for the good things we do was the subject of today’s edition of our Shipwrecked series. The children learned that it is God who gives them the ability to do good things and it is God who should get credit for the good things they do. In our Bible story, Paul and his friend Barnabas went to the town of Lystra where they were telling others about Jesus. While they were there, Paul healed a man with crippled feet. The people of the town got so excited, they claimed that Paul and Barnabas were Greek gods. The people of Lystra wanted to worship Paul and Barnabas. But Paul was quick to point out that they were people, and that God, not Paul and Baranabas, should get the credit and worship for healing the man.

On the island, Aaron and Jamie decided to hold a contest to see who could light a fire the fastest. Aaron used the method of rubbing sticks together and Jamie tried banging rocks together to make a spark. While looking for a good rock, Jamie found a backpack with a match in it. The match had been left behind to help whomever might be on the island later. Jamie used the match to light the fire, and then took credit for winning the competition. Aaron had to do a lot of ridiculous things because Jamie won, like building Jamie a sand castle and singing a song about how great Jamie was. But when the fire blew out, Jamie had to confess that it was the person who left the match, not Jamie, who really deserved credit for the fire.

This week, when your child does something that’s good, compliment them. Tell them they did a good job. Then remind them to thank God for giving them the ability to do the good thing they did.

The purpose of this activity: The purpose of this activity is to help the children recognize situations in which they should be thankful to God, instead of taking the credit themselves.

Description: The children will listen to a story of a girl who does several good things and takes credit for them herself. The kids will yell “God deserves the credit” every time she does something good.

Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this help sheet.

To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. I want you to listen to this story called “Ernestine the Great.” 2. It is about Ernestine. 3. Ernestine is very talented, but she doesn’t give credit to God like she should. 4. When I read that Ernestine does something good, or when someone compliments her,

I want you to say “God deserves the credit!” 5. Are you ready?

For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the DVD.

Note: Read the story. Be sure to read expressively, and to pause for the kids to do their part. If they are unsure ask them what Ernestine should say. Suggestions of what Ernestine should say are included in the story.

During the activity, say the following: 1. Ernestine doesn’t seem very thankful does she? (no.) 2. Who gave Ernestine the ability to do all the things she can do? (God.) 3. What kind of things should Ernestine say? (suggestions are in Story.)

After the activity, say the following: 1. You did a good job knowing when Ernestine should give credit to God. 2. Giving God the credit doesn’t always mean telling others “God did it!” 3. When we are in situations like Ernestine was, we should be humble and thankful. 4. And we should always thank God from our hearts for the things He has given to us.

Summary: Just like Ernestine, sometimes we do good things. Unlike Ernestine, we should always be thankful to God, and be humble.

Ernestine the Great

Everyone knew that Ernestine was a very talented girl because Ernestine told them so whenever she got a chance. Everyone was worried about a big test they had to take at school. When the test came back the teacher said in front of the class, “Congratulations, Ernestine! Everyone passed the test, but you got a perfect score.” Do you know what Ernestine said? Ernestine proudly said, “I knew I would get the best grade in the class. I didn’t even have to study hard.” (Ernestine should have said: “Thank you! I’m glad everyone passed. Thanks for being our teacher.”) At recess Ernestine played kickball. She was faster than anyone else and kicked the ball farthest. Do you know what she said to her teammates? Ernestine proudly said, “It’s a good thing you were on my team or you would never win.” (Ernestine should have said: “Thanks for being on my team.”) Ernestine’s mother always brought her lunch to school. When someone asked her what she had for lunch, do you know what she said? Ernestine proudly said, “My Mom drops off a hot Chick-Fil-A© kid’s meal for me every day. I’d hate to be one of the poor kids who have to eat the cafeteria slop.” (Ernestine should have said: “I’m thankful for my mom bringing my lunch today.”) When Ernestine went shopping she always had money for the coolest things. One of Ernestine’s friends told her how much she liked her shoes. Do you know what Ernestine said? Ernestine proudly said, “Maybe you can afford a pair when they go on sale.” (Ernestine should have said: “Would you like to borrow them sometime?”) When Ernestine went to dance class the teacher told her she would get to dance the only solo at her recital. One of Ernestine’s classmates congratulated her. Do you know what Ernestine said? Ernestine proudly said, “Well, who else would they give it to?” (Ernestine should have said: “I’ll do my very best because I’m representing the whole class.”) When Ernestine went to church she sang louder than anyone. As she was leaving, the pastor thanked her, and do you know what she said? Ernestine proudly said, “My voice is the prettiest, so I want everyone to get to hear me.” (Ernestine should have said: “I thank God I have a voice to sing with.”)

The purpose of this activity: The purpose of this activity is to show the children that all of their gifts and abilities come from God.

Description: The children will be instructed to build a castle or other object but will not be given any materials. The teacher will then give them materials to build with. After they have built the object the teacher will tell the kids that we can do things only because God gives us the ability, and that is why He deserves credit for the good things we do.

Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this help sheet, and a box of blocks or other building materials.

To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Are you good builders? 2. Do you think you could build something if I asked you to? 3. Okay, I want you to build me a castle. 4. Go.

For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the DVD.

Note: The kids will respond that they don’t have anything to build with, or will ask “What do we build it out of?”

During the activity, say the following: 1. Come on, you said you could build me something. 2. What is the matter? (We don’t have anything to build with.) 3. Oh, I can help with that. Use what is in this box. Note: Dump out box of material. 4. Good job. That looks more like it.

After the activity, say the following: 1. How were you able to build this house? (We used the blocks.) 2. Could you have built it if I didn’t give you anything to build with? (No.) 3. In the same way, we can’t do anything good unless God gives us the tools.

Summary: Even though you were able to build something on your own, you wouldn’t have been able to do it without what I gave you. In the same way, we cannot do anything without the gifts and abilities that God gives us.
