Specifically the successful grants are as follows: Construction of six (6) units in Loton Close - $820,000 Improvements to Springhaven Lodge - $648,428 Adaptability measures for Jean Sullivan Units - $67,593

The six (6) Independent Living Units (ILU’s) currently under construction are located adjacent to the existing seven units, Springhaven Lodge and the Kojonup District Hospital, creating an aged care precinct for the District. This close proximity will facilitate access to support services as necessary and the development includes integrated pathways and wide streets providing safe access for both residents and visitors alike. The new units have been designed with adaptability and liveability principles included, considering Alzheimer's Australia's dementia enabling principles. Together these principles will enable residents to 'age in place' with minimum modifications to the buildings required should the mobility needs of the resident change over time. Units have two bedrooms with a craft room facilitating accommodation for couples, a single resident, a single resident and carer or to accommodate visits by family members as necessary. Both communal and sensory gardens will create an environment for social interaction. The improvements to Springhaven Lodge will enhance amenity and care for residents of the hostel, improve working conditions for staff and by upgrading the facility, ensure the facility continues to be valued by the community. This project will improve the accessibility to and within the building, improve the amenity for residents, upgrade two rooms to provide for palliative end of life care, provide a secure facility where dementia residents can continue to live, ensure that the facility is able to operate during power outages and reduce energy costs and sustainability through the installation of solar power.

The conversion of four (4) existing Jean Sullivan Units will enable them to be adaptable to the changing needs of residents. In order to enable residents to ‘age in place’ (i.e. remain in their home for longer), the following modifications will be made: • Refurbish the kitchen cabinetry to enable

easier adaptability should the accessibility needs of the residents change over time. This will involve having the kitchen sink bench height able to be adjusted at minimal cost (at a future date) and modifications to ovens so that residents do not have to bend to use them.

• Refurbish bathroom cabinetry to enable accessibility to the sink with a mobility aid;

• Installation of toggle light and GPO switches; • Installation of door threshold ramps; • Installation of concrete paving and raised

garden beds in the rear gardens; and • Upgrade existing electric storage hot water

heaters to efficient heat pump systems. The ability to age in place is now recognised as a major factor in relation to the overall wellbeing of older people. Staying in the community they know and where they are known by local people, is important to many older people in terms of maintaining key social connections and continuing to participate in community life. This funding provides a huge step forward for Kojonup to enable more residents to age in place, providing extended family structures and preserving the community that we all know and love. SEGRA Councillors recently attended the SEGRA conference in Albany. SEGRA is a National conference with many and varied topics covered over two days addressing Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia. This conference was the 20th held in venues across Australia with The Great Southern region being fortunate to host this year’s event in Albany providing an opportunity to showcase our region.

Page 3: SHIRE OF KOJONUP E-NEWS · PDF fileproviding an opportunity to showcase our region. ... local people who can share their personal stories. ... attack across the Channel

The aim of SEGRA is to look for solutions rather than problems and through the 'SEGRA Challenge', gives the opportunity for delegates to pitch creative ideas, connect with like-minded people and to design actions to implement over the following months to present back to the next conference. All Councillors thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to network with innovative people, 40% of whom came from interstate, and have brought home much food for thought and forward planning.

Volunteers – We Need You! We would love your help at The Kodja Place if you can spare even one day a month as that would be wonderful! The Kodja Place has been built by this community, houses our story and there's nothing visitors love more than interacting with welcoming local people who can share their personal stories. Come down and see what's involved and how you can be a part of this journey.

Community members are reminded that the Shire President is available for appointments Wednesday morning from 10:00am until noon. Please contact the Shire Office on (08) 9831 2400. Ronnie Fleay Rick Mitchell-Collins Shire President Chief Executive Officer

SPRINGHAVEN NEWS

The residents have been enjoying the lovely sunshine that has graced us recently. They have been outside playing games, sitting and warming up their cold bodies and having lovely chats. It has been great to be able to sit and listen to their stories – even to share a laugh or three!

LIBRARY NEWS New books have arrived and are still arriving at the library. I’m sure we have something for everyone to enjoy and here is just a taste of what we have in… New Reads

The Good People – Hannah Kent. In 1825 in a remote Irish valley lying between the mountains and Flesk river of Killarney, three women are brought together by strange and troubling events. Nora Leahy, a widow, has lost her daughter and her husband in the same year, and is now burdened with

the care of her grandson, Michael. Down by the river, an old woman known as Nance Roche lives alone, acting as a 'doctress' to the community, a person said to possess knowledge from the Good People that enables her to cure inexplicable ills. With the arrival of a new priest and his determination to cleanse the valley of superstitious practices, the purity of Nance's actions is called into question.

A Promise of Fire – Amanda Bouchet. Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a travelling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods and her homicidal mother have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her

with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever. Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm – until he realises he wants her for much more than her magic.

The Fighting Season – Bram Connelly. Step aside Andy McNab and Chris Ryan, there's a new special forces operator out there – ultra lethal, ultra-tough, and all Australian. In the Badlands of central Afghanistan an Australian Special Forces platoon is fatally hit by a roadside bomb. A shadowy

Taliban commander, codenamed 'Rapier', is identified as responsible for the deadly attack. Matt Rix, the ultra-tough commando who led the ambushed platoon swears vengeance. Rix is one of Special Forces' most lethal operators. He'll neutralise Rapier – whatever it takes...but in Afghanistan's brutal war, not all things are as they seem...

Tell the truth, Shame the devil – Melina Marchetta. Chief Inspector Bish Ortley of the London Met, divorced and still grieving the death of his son, has been drowning his anger in Scotch. Something has to give, and he's no sooner suspended from the force than a busload of British students is subject to a deadly bomb

attack across the Channel. Bish's daughter is one of those on board. Also on the bus is Violette LeBrac. Raised in Australia, Violette has a troubled background. Before Violette's part in the French tragedy can be established she disappears. Bish, who was involved in Noor LeBrac's arrest, is now compelled to question everything that happened back then. And the more he delves into the lives of the family he helped put away, the more he realises that truth wears many colours.

A huge thank you to Barb & Steve for all the balls. The children had a great time playing in them, throwing them & it wasn’t too difficult picking them up afterwards. I’d also really like to express my appreciation to Marina, James & Tasha for their help every month moving all the props from the library and

WATERWISE AQUATIC CENTRE As many of you would have seen, the Shire has purchased and is utilising blankets at the Swimming Pool. The blankets are just one part of the Shire’s strategy for becoming more water efficient under the Water Corporations ‘Waterwise’ program. Great Southern Regional Manager, Adrian Stewart, had the following to say:

“Congratulations to the Shire of Kojonup for its efforts to save water at the Kojonup Pool, which was recently recognised as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre,” Mr Stewart said. “Water efficient fixtures and fitting have been installed throughout the centre and the amount of water use in day-to-day operations has been minimised. “This is a great achievement and the Kojonup Pool is now one of 31 Waterwise Aquatic Centres recognised across Western Australia. “Thank you for your commitment to saving water and helping to promote

the Waterwise message in the wider community.” See attached photos. Caption to read: “Water Corporation representative – Mick Irving and Shire of Kojonup Pool Manager – Jen Spriggs stand before the blanketed pool.”
