Blanket Fit

Blanket Size Chart ( Bottom measurement )

How can I tell if the blanket fits?A blanket will not stay in place unless it fits properly. A badly fitting blan-ket will slip and could cause discomfort for the horse and/or be strained tothe breaking point.

• Measure your horse before you go to your local tack shop. This can bedone with a tape measure. Simply put one end of the tape in the centerof your horse’s chest and the other end on the horse’s buttocks where youwould expect the blanket to finish.

• Horse blankets are sized in centimeters, inches or feet and inches—makesure you check what size blanket you are getting as a 66" blanket will notfit a 6'6" horse.

• When you’ve bought the blanket, take it home and try it on your horseover a clean bedsheet or clean summer sheet—make sure you leave all thetags on. If the blanket fits, then remove the tags and use; if not, youmight be able to return the blanket to the retail store you purchased itfrom as long as it is in a saleable condition —check with your retailer atthe time you purchase the blanket.

• The blanket should fit well over the withers and the shoulders so that thehorse can move freely without the blanket slipping back.

• The chest straps should be fastened so that the fabric overlaps under-neath them. The straps should be tight enough to hold the blanket inplace, but not so tight that it causes the blanket’s shape to distort on thehorse’s back or could cause pressure points around the horse’s chest andwither area.

• Cross surcingles should be fastened so you can fit a hand’s breadth be-tween the surcingles and the horse’s body. This means that the straps aretight enough to prevent legs becoming caught should the horse lie down,but not so tight that the horse will be uncomfortable.

• If the blanket has leg straps, they should be fastened so that the left strapis passed around the left hind leg and fastened back to the left side. Theright strap should then pass around the right hind leg, loop through theleft strap, and then fasten to the right side. There should be about 4–5"between the strap and the horse’s leg to prevent the blanket slippingwithout causing the horse any discomfort.
