Hockey 7's – Results!

Last Friday two teams – a girls' and a boys' team – went to Hawthorn to represent our school in the regional Hockey 7's! The

girls' team won one game and drew the two others, and the boys won one game and lost the others. We didn't have much

training, so this is a huge achievement! Congratulations to the teams for an outstanding performance!

Last term, 2G were ‘Waste Wise Warriors’ as we investigated and learnt so much about sustainability as

part of our Unit of Inquiry.

Landfill was our issue…..particularly waste with food. We found out our very own classroom had a prob-

lem with this when we searched our class bin!

So locally we were starting to make change for what we knew was a global problem!

We went crazy with investigations that involved even more ACTION!

We performed at assembly to share our message with a 5R’s song. We said ideas like, “Lets save the

world with Judy Moody” a super story we shared. Finally, we thought our own classroom waste needing

investigating further. ACTION happened.

We collected food waste in a COMPOST bucket and when it was full we contacted Nadia Robertson to see

if we could add a real COMPOST bin to the gratitude garden. She was so helpful, and with the support

from Ms Bienert, Mr Stokes, Bunnings Box Hill and Graydon we started a COMPOSTING program for our

classroom waste.

Here is some of the reflections from the 2G Waste Wise Warriors.

Today 2G was excited to work together as a team to make a big difference to their compost mission!

We planned to use our new tumbler compost bucket that Graydon built. Bunnings provided this for

free thanks to a link with Nadia and the wonderful community project of the gratitude garden.

We went to the garden to fill it with pea straw, mouldy fruit that we had collected last term, decompo-

sition powder and spray accelerator. The most important thing was wearing the gloves and a mask so

we didn’t smell the rotting, decomposing food and get any dust in our faces from the other items.

Once we finished our work we turned the tumbler and we opened the bucket again to see the stuff

starting to change into soil. We learnt a lot about the process. Anglein

In 2G we are making a giant compost pile. All 2G helped and enjoyed composing in the gratitude gar-

den. We all had a go and it was fun. We already had a compost bucket from last term and now 2G put

everything that is food waste in the classroom into a compost bin. All the food changes colours and

shapes. Audrey and Mahee

Today 2G was working on a compost bin. We can’t put cat or dog’s poo or any meat or diseased plants

into this bin. You can’t put these in because it will make the compost bad. We are doing a compost bin

because if the food scraps go into landfill it will cause a toxic gas and make our environment bad.

Term 3: Working Bee – Sunday August 20th, 2017

The Term 3 working bee will be held on Sunday August 20th. Once again this term, we would appreciate the assistance of the Balwyn North Primary School community, as we continue to take pride in our wonderful school grounds. The Working Bee will be commencing at 9am and finishing at noon with a sausage sizzle.

A small yet committed number of people assisted at the Working Bee in Term 2. We would love to see many more helpers this Sunday 20th August.

Can you volunteer one, two or three hours of your time? No matter how long you can help for, your assistance in maintaining our school grounds would be greatly appreciated.

Listed below are some of the tasks we will be attempting to complete on the day.

A reminder that due to OHSC policy, no personal power tools can be used on the day.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or queries. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday August 20th.
