It’s New Year’s Eve as I’m working away at this week’s issue of the Breeze.

Thinking about the past year gives me much to reflect on – so many things have happened personally, locally, nationally and internationally, and each has something to be taken away as a learning experience.

The dawn of each new year puts people into a mindset for making resolutions and taking on ambitious projects. Some of us have been known to set ourselves up for failure by getting caught up in the spirit of making our lives better in some way.

Rather than diving headfirst into some-thing new, I’m going to take stock of the many positive things that I’m so fortunate to have in my life.

Family is always first for me, and with the start of our new businesses this fall I know that my daughter and husband don’t always feel that’s the case.

I’ve always been a bit of a doter, and with the hours spent on Shootin’ the Breeze and Mountainside Printing I haven’t been as at-tentive to them as they are used to. Most of the time they are understanding, but it will

be a relief for all of us when we have the help in place to allow me to be present with my family in the way that we are accustomed to. For now, I can only express my thanks to Dennis and Jaiden for allowing me to spread my wings with this new endeavour.

While this adventure has meant many, many hours away from home, it has been a pleasure that I spend a good number of those hours with my big brother, Cary. He moved here in September to work in both of the new businesses, and I honestly couldn’t have done this without his help. He works the same crazy hours that I do without complaint, and we’re on the same page most of the time. Thank you Cary for all that you do for me!

We were able to make a trip back to Saskatchewan for Christmas for some much-needed time with our parents, siblings and friends. Sharing love and laughter energizes us until the next time we can make it home.

I will always think of Nipawin as “home” because that’s where my family is, but Pincher Creek is beginning to feel more and more like home as we carve out our own little niche for ourselves here.

I have nothing to complain about – I have family and friends who love me uncondition-ally, I have created a job for myself that I can do with passion, I am a proud mother, I am healthy (even with those extra pounds!), and there is nothing material that I want for.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my share of bad days, worries, hurt feelings, stress and insomnia too! I try my best not to dwell on them and to focus on the good days and the positive things.

We don’t know what’s down the road for us in 2012, but I hope the surprises are pleas-ant and abundant, and that we all find a little bit more of the one thing I’m looking for ... more time.

That means making the time for things, not expecting it to magically appear! This is one thing that I will be striving to do.

I hope your Christmas season joys were many, that you took time to relax and laugh, and that the new year brings you happiness and good health.

Here’s to 2012!

Shannon Robin

She’s a beauty

New Year’s baby Carleigh arrived January 2.

Mom Christa Cat Face, dad Joey Grier and big sister Callie were the first family to welcome a new member in 2012.

Baby Carleigh was due on Jan. 2, and ar-rived right on sched-ule at 8:24 a.m. at the Pincher Creek Hospital.

Carleigh weighed eight pounds one ounce, and is a beautiful baby.

A mere 24 hours after Carleigh’s birth, her parents were tired but happy, and hoping to head home to Brocket.

The birth of a child is a celebration at any time of year – congratultions to Christa and Joey!

Welcoming the babies of 2012A fun pastime each year is guess-

ing when and where the first babies of the year will be born, and who the lucky parents will be.

With only two hospitals in the area delivering babies (with the exception of emergencies), it wasn’t too hard to find baby number 1, little Carleigh of Brocket who was born Jan. 2 in Pincher Creek.

There will be more firsts from communities whose obstetric care is provided elsewhere, and we would like to announce the first baby born from each town in our coverage area.

Help us to share these wonder-ful arrivals by calling Shannon at 403-904-2227 or sending an email to [email protected].

The 2011 Tree of Hope graces the lobby of the Pincher Creek hos-pital, with cards acknowledging generous donations exceeding $9,800.

Pincher Creek Credit Union tops up the Tree of Hope

By Tom Gillespie

Pincher Creek Credit Union has once again demon-strated its community support with a $3,500 donation to Windy Slopes Health Foundation’s Trees of Hope cam-paign. With donations from the general public, the 2011 campaign now stands at over $9,800 raised.

“We’re extremely grateful to Pincher Creek Credit Union for this wonderful gift,” said foundation chairman Sandy Breckenridge. “They are there for the foundation every year and have come through for us again in 2011.”

Trees of Hope has been a part of the Christmas season in Pincher Creek for 21 years, first through the hospital auxiliary and now through the foundation. Everyone is in-vited to make a donation to remember a loved one or send season’s greetings to friends and family. Memorials and greetings are added to a special decoration and hung on the Christmas tree in the admitting area at Pincher Creek Health Centre.

Over the years, the Trees of Hope campaign has en-hanced palliative care, emergency, surgical, acute care, physiotherapy and other departments at the health centre.

“We have had donations by mail using our flyers, but lots of folks prefer to drop by and make their donation in

person,” Sandy said. “We appreciate every gift received, no matter the size.

Every single dollar is used to enhance services locally.”

A great start to the new year!About 200 people attended the

annual Stavely Elks Club New Year’s Eve dance this year, and shortly after midnight they all had their fingers crossed as the draw was made for a $2,500 travel voucher.

The draw was made by 93-year-old Riley Moon, who happens to be the oldest Elk member in District 14.

To the sur-prise of both men, the ticket Riley pulled from the draw barrel belonged to his son Gord of Nanton.

Gord says he was “pretty excited”, but also hoped no one thought it was “a bad draw.”

It was defin-itely not a bad draw to win!

As an added bonus, an extra $500 cash for spending money went Gord’s way because he was present when the draw was made.

Gord and his wife Mavis have “lots of ideas to sort through” as they decide where to head on vaca-tion, and they’re counting on Gail at the Nanton Travel Agency to help them out.

Gord has been a member of the Stavely Elks Club for 43 years, and figures he’s made it to all but one of the past 20 New Year’s Eve dances.

It goes to show that consistency pays off!

Elks member Don Broomfield says the event is a deal that can’t be

beat, with a $40 ticket buying you a prime rib dinner, an evening of great socializing, and a chance to win the vacation draw.

Don couldn’t say enough about the success of the evening.

“Our cooks did an amazing job in the kitchen. The meat was cooked just right, as usual, and the meal as a

whole was just awesome.”He says the “Free Beer Band kept

the dance floor full with everything from old swinging and jive tunes to new country. A perfect fit for our event.”

It took about a dozen Elks in the kitchen to prepare dinner, and another 20 or so to make arrange-ments for the evening, decorate, and clean up.

With this group there never seems to be a shortage of willing and helping hands.

Gord describes the Stavely Elks group as “very active,” and that may

be an understatement. The club is the largest in Canada

outside of the major cities, boasting a membership exceeding 170 Elks.

Most members come from the MD of Willow Creek, but some live as far away as Vancouver.

Next on the to-do list is a bartend-ing gig for a company’s customer

appreciation dinner and dance.

On Jan. 21 the Elks are sponsors of the Robbie Burns Celebration by the Skye-Anna School of High-land Dancing of Stavely.

Don is proud to point out that the Elks “always have something on the go.”

The club was instituted in 1925, and has been active since with the exception of

1942-45 during the war years. At its peak in 1980 there were 304

members in Stavely Elks No. 112 – not bad for a town of approximately 500 residents!

In December of 1925 two traditions were born. The first was Santa and his Elk helpers giving candy bags to the children before Christmas, and the second was the New Year’s Eve dance.

Good things have longevity, and both of these traditions have carried on through 2011.

As most would agree, Don thinks this is “quite a notable statistic.”

Gord and Mavis Moon accept the New Year’s Eve prize from Exalted Ruler Ed Greenop of the Stavely Elks Club.

More than the price is right at Sobeys

Sobeys assistant manager Ken Sorge checks both prices and inven-tory levels as part of his regular routine. The scanning gun gives an instant price check reference and allows for electronic inventory control and ordering.

Sobeys Pincher Creek strives to pro-vide “service, quality and freshness at competitive prices,” according to owner Richard Levesque.

The 20,000-square-foot store is loaded with a huge variety of grocery items, household necessities and even fresh flowers for the dinner table.

Bakery items are made daily on-site, as are quick lunch or dinner items like freshly made chili, soups and pizza.

“The produce is as fresh as we can get it, and everything is guaranteed,” Richard says, “I stand behind every-thing we make – that’s how much confidence I have in our store.”

Many other quick meal options such as shepherd’s pie, barbecued chicken and a variety of side dishes are avail-able every day at the store, and come in particularly handy on those days when time is a little short.

Pizzas can be purchased ready to bake, or hot from the oven with at least 20 minutes notice. If you know pizza is on the menu for the evening, call ahead in the morning and it will be piping hot from the oven at the time you wish to pick it up.

Sobeys offers storewide savings on the first Tuesday of each month which makes for a busy day!

Many people load up their carts to take advantage of the 10 per cent discount received at the till. Better yet, if you have your Club Sobeys card on hand, the discount increases to 15 per cent, plus you earn points on your purchase.

For the next two weeks, customers can continue to earn stamps on the Shop Smart cards for their chance at winning $2,000 of fuel. Richard feels this promotion has been well received.

Sobeys actively supports as many community events as possible while ac-knowledging they “can’t do everything.” Helping youth with their fundraising is high on the priority list.

The recent Hampers of Hope cam-paign raised about $3,000 for the local

food bank in time for Christmas.

A barbecue is available to use for fundraisers and can be taken to a specific destination or set up outside the store.

Richard enjoys children and is happy to host school tours through the store. There might even be pizza and ice cream involved!

Another perk of shopping at Sobeys is the free Inspired magazine, with new issues avail-able quarterly. The magazine is loaded with recipes and ideas, and a point is made to stock all ingredients for the current recipes.

Richard and has wife Trina are joined at the store by their children Rikki and Taylor, and over 40 employees.

Assistant manager Ken Sorge says the Levesques “are good people to work for,” and this means something coming from a man who has been involved with the store since it opened as an IGA in 1997.

In 2009, Richard was the general manager, Trina was the deli manager, and their daughter Sarah was an employee at the Uplands Sobeys in Lethbridge. They were ready for a new opportunity, and it presented itself that year when Pincher Creek Sobeys came up for sale.

They were up to the challenge, and took over in August of that year. Richard describes the acquisition of Sobeys so far as “a learning experience.”

Richard’s career with food began at-Western Pizza in Regina where he started as a dishwasher. He worked his way up to the top of the kitchen hierarchy as a Red Seal Chef.

Earning this designation requires a minimum of 5,000 hours of work experi-ence along with technical training and a formal exam.

This achievement sets a great example for the many young employees who may enter the workforce by helping out bag-ging groceries.

Sobeys is located at 819 Main St. in Pincher Creek, and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Earn Shop Smart points with each visit until Jan. 15.

Students of Granum School made their audience “Ready for Christmas” Dec. 21 through music, dance and drama.

The younger students sang and danced around a theme of baking, and told the nativity story through drama.

Grade 4 to 6 students showed off their line dancing prowess, and the jun-ior high students acted out The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Santa stopped by with goodies for the kids to reward them for a job well done! Granum School students and staff perform “Silent Night” at their Dec. 21 concert.

African music comes to the Empress

Adam Solomon

On Jan. 18 and 19, the energy and multicultural music of African Guitar Summit will take audience members on a musical ride through Africa’s heartland.

The group features Canadian musi-cians of African origin, and guitar is only one of the instruments you’ll hear from them.

Colourful and relaxing African guitar music is rapidly becoming a genre all its own and the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod is proud to bring this show to its historic stage.

African Guitar Summit exploded onto the world music scene in 2004, when CBC’s Radio On Stage program brought together “the smooth fire of Juno Award winner Alpha YaYa Diallo from Guinea, with his countryman Naby Camara on balafon; from Ghana, the elder master of the guitar, Pa Joe, with golden voice Theo Boakye, and the heartbeat of drummer Kofi Ackah; from Kenya, the Fiesta guitar of professor Adam Solomon; from Bur-

undi/Rwanda, the bluesy Mighty Popo; and from Madagascar the quicksilver gui-tars and harmonies of Donne Roberts and multiple Juno Award winner Madagascar Slim.” – Paquin Entertainment.

Their first album took home the Juno Award for world music album of the year in 2005. The album also landed in the Top 10 Most Downloaded Songs on iTunes’ Today’s Top Album Chart and in the Top 20 of the World Music Charts, Europe.

Their second release received a Juno Award and international acclaim as well.

Jon Helm of the Empress Theatre says “for world music fans it doesn’t get much better than this!” and he encourages those interested to get their tickets before they sell out.

Tickets are available from the Empress Theatre box office by calling 1-800-540-9229.

Holidaygreenery

This year we witnessed a lot of unusual greenery over the Christmas season.Bits of snow have come and gone, but for the most part the fields are barren and lawns are in full view. The Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek was treated to a bit of an excavation makeover this fall and the sprayed grass seed is a green contrast to the surrounding area!Temperatures will continue to be a little warmer than usual for the next week with no snow in the immediate forecast.
