Superior St. Duluth, MN 55804 218.724.6432 Thank you to all who have visited us in our new location! The feedback has been great. I’m glad you like it as much as we do. If you haven’t made it out yet, there are plenty of reasons to do so this summer. The schedule is packed full of very exciting workshops, classes, events, and trunk shows. Some continued traditions include our summer local beer tastings, knitting at the beach, knitting in public, and a one of a kind trunk show from the Three Irish Girls. One of the new traditions for us will participating in the Lakeside Sidewalk Sale in July. We will set up outside with the other local merchants on Superior Street. We will also be participating in World Wide Knit in Public week, and I am looking forward to bring it to the streets and hosting a KIP event. Bring your chair and let’s crowd the sidewalk with your comrades and enjoy the day! The Knitters Guild will also be at Sir Ben’s for this special day. We will also be on the sidelines of Grandma’s Marathon. The word is that the morning is quiet, with people parking along Superior Street to catch a glimpse of their loved one, but then it clears out as the day moves on. We have some new yarns to tempt you this summer as well. First, is a 100% organic linen from Quince & Company. Sparrow is a fingering/sport weight yarn with a color palette to keep you coming back for more. Personally speaking, pink has never been my color of choice. Never. But I admit it is one of the three I chose for my first project, the Linen Poncholette by Sister Arts Studio. Pink grapefruit was the chosen one! We are also now carrying a cobweb lace yarn in a pure white for those traditional lace knitters, and silk/linen blend from Queensland Yarns. The new colors for summer are vibrant and my needles can’t keep up! We have some new classes and workshops to offer as well. We are also hosting some guest instructors, including Carol Anderson from Cottage Creations, Mary Reichert from Otlak Felt Studio, and Diane L. Augustin from Yarn Happy Bead Happy. With our new and improved classroom offering us a chance to get messy and a little wet, we will offer a natural dyeing class and a wet felting class. We are also doing another weaving class, as well as a great variety of knitting, crochet, and needle felting classes. Here’s to a great summer. Don’t forget your project... Thank you to all who have visited us in our new location!

Carol Anderson WorkshopsSaturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28

Carol Anderson, the owner of Cottage Creations, has designed and written knitting instructions since 1983. With 60 years of knitting experience, her efforts were greatly influenced by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s approach to knitting. Her signature design is no doubt the Wonderful Wallaby Sweater for the Family, and one of Yarn Harbor’s best-selling designs is Lily’s Little Sweater. We are excited for her to stop here and share some of her knowledge. No matter your level of knitting, you will always learn something in a Carol Anderson class. Check the class listings sections for more details, and sign up now as space is limited.

t Knitting at the Beach Tuesdays this summer, 6:00 pm until sundown.

Starting July 7th, we meet at Kitchi Gammi Park (Brighton Beach). Park at the end of the road in the gravel parking area, and walk down the trail that goes through the woods. You will come to the yarn in the tree to your right, about one city block down, and you will find us on the large rock deck that Lake Superior has provided for our use. This will be our fifth year at the beach - definitely one of our favorite things. We hope to see you there!

You can simply wind a ball using wool yarn and felt it in your washing machine, then put it straight in the dryer. There are also patterns on Ravelry for casings around your wound balls for a neater appearance. [photo from diynatural.com]

Rigid Heddle Weaving 101 - Nikki Bollman Saturday @ 11 - 5 (with a break for lunch) [7/11] & Saturday @ 9 - 10 am [8/1]

Need a new way to bust through that yarn stash? Or maybe you’re ready to add a new dimension to your fiber repertoire? Let’s explore

the basics of making fabric. Using a portable rigid heddle loom, we will talk about warp and weft, learn direct warping, and weave a

plain scarf while practicing rhythm and even tension. We will go over hemming and taking the project off the loom at our finishing

party. Materials: Rigid Heddle loom (rental available from Yarn Harbor), a few yards of smooth scrap yarn, tapestry needle, and warp

and weft yarn (150 yards worsted weight yarn for each). For the warp yarn, it needs to pass the “pull test”: if the yarn snaps or drifts apart

when firmly pulled, then it isn’t suitable for warp. Cost: $45 (loom rental: $15 - limited supply)

Natural Dyeing Class - Theresa Hornstein Saturday @ 10 am - 2 pm [8/22]

When most people think of natural dyes, it’s the exotics that come to mind, but the plants in our region can create a rich color palette

own backyard, how to prepare different dyes, and how to use modifiers to expand the range of colors. Materials: one skein of natural

color wool yarn. Cost: $25

Kids Knitting Camp - Jean Walters, Yarn Harbor Monday - Friday @ 10 - 11 am [8/10-8/14]

People 8 years old to middle school age will learn to knit or advance their knitting skills in a workshop atmosphere. New knitters will

start with the knit stitch, and can learn to purl, cast on, bind off, or read a pattern once they’ve mastered the knit stitch. If you can already

knit, you can advance your skills or get help with a project you’ve already started. We will meet each morning for a week. Materials: 10”

US 8 straight needles (wood or bamboo suggested) and worsted weight yarn or project you are working on. Cost: $30

Felting Foundations - Mary Reichert, Otlak Felt Studio Saturday @ 10 am - 3:30 pm [9/5]

Creating felt is a magical process. What begins as a soft pile of wool, with a little water, soap, and agitation, turns into a durable and

beautiful piece of fabric. In this beginning class, you will design and layout a flat piece of felt with carded wool, creating your own piece

of felt which can then be used for a project of your choosing--a placemat, coasters, small rug, or yardage for sewing projects--with

the finished piece about 16” by 22”. This wool shrinks 40% from carded wool to finished felt and this is all done by hand; please come

prepared to be on your feet and physically engaged in your project. Cost: $50, plus $15 materials fee
