I n 1976 in Little Silver, there were seven gas station/general auto repair shops, Peter Soviero, owner of Mayo Auto Ser-vice recalls. Everybody was a general repair shop back then, working on Chevys, Fords, and Chryslers. It was difficult to get a piece of that pie. Thats when I started specializing on the import work. Back then, no one was servicing or repairing import cars.

He and a helper worked seven days a week, and in three years they had outgrown the space. Mayo then moved to a 4,000-square-foot former warehouse in Little Silver, where Soviero operated for the next 25 years. The business evolved very quickly, he explained, once he added import cars to the domestics he was already servicing, The business just took off at that point. Everybody who owned Mercedes, Porsche, or BMW back then was almost forced to go to the dealer. I wanted to offer my customers a choice over going to the dealer and thats when I became the dealer alternative.

It was a move that propelled the business to success in the 1980s, one which has now expanded to a 14,000-square-foot facility in Red Bank with 14 service bays and 12 employees. Soviero and his staff on average service 45 to 50 cars on a daily

basis. His philosophy is simple: I offer dealer qual-ity service for a lot less money.

Technicians are trained and ASE Certified, specializing in Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Lexus, Land Rover, Saab, Volvo, all Japanese vehicles, and all domestic cars, vans and trucks.

Soviero attributes the business success to his often-obsessive attention to detail and a commit-ment to keeping up with the latest technology.

That aspect is rapidly changing, Soviero said, noting that when small repair shops go under, its likely because they lack the most current diagnos-

tic equipment and cant keep up with the ever changing technology. What sets me apart today is that I invest a tremendous amount of money in diagnostic equipment, targeted for the European cars. General repair shops dont have that type of equipment, so they are forced to turn the work away. My customers feel secure in our expertise and are aware of Mayo Auto Services knowledge and state-of-the-art equipment to do the job right.

In addition to that equipment, his staff is also constantly taking courses on new tech-nologies. Every year something new devel-opscars that self-parkcars that brake on their own. I invest a lot of money, and my technicians spend a lot of time to stay

updated. If you dont stay on top of it, its going to pass you by, he said.

A majority of the general public is under the false impression that if you dont go back to the dealer for service while the car is under the new car warranty, you void the warranty. Thats abso-lutely not true, Soviero said. As long as you ser-vice the car in accordance with the factory rec-ommended maintenance schedules, the warranty remains valid, no matter where you have your car serviced.

C elebrate the recent grand opening of Phoenix Performing Arts Cen-ter, the new home of Phoenix Productions, Red Banks own non-profit community theatre organization. We have an exciting few months coming up, as we look forward to producing Mary Poppins in July 2015, followed by Evita in September, and then Peter Pan in November. All are welcome to audition includ-ing several roles for children ages 7-13 in both Mary Poppins and Peter Pan and no roles are cast until the audition process is over. If you know a talented youngster who loves to perform, please look into our special audition workshops aimed at preparing children and teenagers for auditions for both shows.

Camp Phoenix is the original Musical Theatre Experience for the young performer. We are excited about the new opportunities available to performers ages 7 to 17 afforded by our new Phoenix Performing Arts Center including full day sessions and aftercare until 6 p.m.

While we continue to launch our main stage productions at the Count Basie Theatre, our new space will allow us to produce smaller shows in our own black box venue. And, in our near future, include an outreach program of traveling shows, childrens theatre productions, and the-atre performing groups for seniors.

O ver the past six years, Subaru owners have helped donate over $25 million to various charities with their choice to purchase or lease a new Subaru during the Share The Love Event. The event took place during the holiday season and not only included incredible deals on new Subarus, but also was an opportunity to act philanthropically and contribute to the community.

With every new Subaru that was purchased or leased, Subaru donated $250 to the customers choice of five national charities or the one charity specific to the local Subaru dealership.

World Subaru, located on Shrewsbury Ave. in Shrewsbury/Tinton Falls, chose The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation for their local charity option for those participating in the Share The Love Event. The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation raises money for alternative therapies and actual treatments for children in desperate need.

The statistics surrounding childhood cancer are startling one in every 330 children will be diagnosed with a form of cancer by age 20, and cancer claims the lives of more children annually than any other disease, such as asthma, muscular dys-trophy, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS all combined. The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation is a leader in the fore-front of bringing many alternative therapies into clinics which could prolong the lives of children diagnosed with cancer until a cure is found.

World Subaru general manager Joe Wajda gave his sentiment for the Share The Love Event and his reasoning for choosing The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation for World Subarus local charity option. The Share The Love Event is such a powerful opportunity to make a positive change, not only locally, but also on a national level. Ive always been amazed at the ability to make an impact on the lives of others, whether on a small personal level like being able to offer a Subaru for an affordable price to another member of my community, or on such a larger scale, like taking part in philanthropy that has the potential to do something as meaningful as making strides towards the treatment of childhood cancer. I believe that the combined efforts of many can evolve into something so much larger than we can fathom, something as large as aiding in the fight against childrens can-cer, and the fact that I personally can be involved in this, and be an active part of it, is one of the greatest things I can imagine.
