Shop Local Nov. 30 For Small Business Saturday
Large national retailers have BlackFriday. Online retailers have CyberMonday. Now small businesses havea day of their own during the criticalholiday season in Small BusinessSaturday.
Small Business Saturday is heldannually on the Saturday afterThanksgiving. This year it falls onNov. 30. It is a day for everyone from the business owners who create
jobs to the customers who buy locally
to support small businesses thatinvigorate the economy and keepcommunities thriving.
American Express initiated SmallBusiness Saturday in 2010 to helpsmall businesses get more exposure
during one of the biggest shoppingweekends of the year.
In 2012, U.S. consumers who wereaware of Small Business Saturday areestimated to have spent a reportedtotal of $5.5 billion with independentmerchants.
Also in 2012, government ofcials
in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.,ofcially recognized Small Business
Saturday including President Obamaand the U.S. Senate.
Small business owners have been
very active and creative with theirpromotions. American Express ishelping amplify those efforts with freedigital and in-store marketing toolsto help small business owners expandtheir local footprint. These tools can be
found at smallbusinesssaturday.com.Visit www.shopsmall.com to
nd ways to participate and more
information.
The 3/50 Project
The 3/50 Project was started in2009 by Minneapolis-based retailconsultant Cinda Baxter. It beganwith a blog post and has quickly takenoff.
Baxters idea was simple: if half ofthe employed U.S. population chose
three locally owned independentbusinesses they would hate to lose, and then spent a combined total of$50 a month with them, it wouldhave a major impact generatingan estimated $42.6 billion of revenue
annually. For every $100 spent in locally
owned independent stores, $68 returnsto the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If thatmoney is spent at a national chain, only$43 stays in the community. Spend itonline and nothing comes home.
Learn more about supportingindependently-owned businesses allyear long at www.the350project.net.
Choose independentmerchants for holidaygifts & help support
the community
This Holiday Shop Local! The unique character of our communities is defined in large part by the businesses that reside here, and that playsa big factor in your overall sati sfaction with where you live a nd the value of your home and property. Dollars spentin locally-owned bus inesses have a huge impact on this community. When shopping locally, you simultaneouslycreate jobs, fund more city services t hrough sales tax , invest in neighborhood improvement and promote communitydevelopment. In celebration of Small Business Saturday, and in preparation for the holiday season, the Kirkwood-Des Peres AreaChamber of Commerce says tha nk you for your support. Our commun ity wil l continue to prosper because of yourpatronage in our shops and offices. Please consider buying your goods and services locally and especially f rom thestrong community supporters listed below.Happy Holidays!

VERDE KIDSJessica Kester, owner of Verde
Kids, 27 S. Old Orchard Ave., wants to
make sure children grow up with anawareness of the environment and anappreciation for sustainable products.
It was three years ago that Kesteropened Verde Kids, an eco-mindedsource with products offering anenvironmental focus. The clothes aremade from organic cotton and toys arefashioned out of recycled materials orwood from sustainable sources.
Kester was teaching family andyouth programs at the MissouriBotanical Garden when she foundenvironmentally-focused materials.
I thought it would be neat if thesethings could all be in one place, shesaid. So I decided to open a shop.
Products are all made in the UnitedStates and many are made locally.Besides clothes and toys, the shop has
environmentally friendly kitchen andbath products.
My hope is that in 100 yearstheres not a need for a store like minebecause all products will be made inan environmentally friendly way, shesaid.

8-B Webster-Kirkwood Times November 29 - December 5, 2013
by Jaime MowersLong before American Express
founded Small Business Saturday, local business districts were doingtheir part to bolster small businessesin their towns.
Webster Groves and Kirkwood boastfour business districts between the
two communities the Old OrchardBusiness District, the Old WebsterBusiness District, the CrossroadsSpecial Business District and theDowntown Kirkwood Special BusinessDistrict.
The districts work on behalf oftheir member businesses to promoteshopping at their stores and hostcommunity events that businesses canbe part of.
Even before Small BusinessSaturday became an AmericanExpress promotion, the DowntownKirkwood Special Business Districtwas very aware of the contributionthat our small businesses make to
our community, said Donna Poe, whoserves as executive director of thedistrict. We started a series of eventsthat focus on our local businesses andlocal talent, and we also try to createa welcoming and pedestrian-friendlyenvironment in downtown Kirkwoodthat will help attract customers to ourbusinesses.
Business districts also help bringbusiness owners together.
Theres wonderful networkingamong business owners and thecamaraderie between us createsa friendly atmosphere, said PatRichards, who owns Embroider TheOccasion and serves as president ofthe Old Webster Trade Association. We help each other and we refercustomers to each other. If we donthave what theyre looking for, we knowwho does and well send them there.
Verde Kids owner Jessica Kestersaid members of the Old OrchardBusiness District do the same.
There are business that areworking on cross promoting eachother, she said, noting Verde Kids ispromoting Naturally Pure Salon byholding a rafe for their customers to
win a makeover at the salon. We wantto send people to each other versussending them outside of Webster. Wesend customers back and forth and weappreciate each others efforts becausethats the way were going to grow asbusinesses and compete against thebig stores. Our goal is to be able tomake a presence known as a groupof places a place where people cancome and knock a few things off theirlist at one time. We want to make it(the Old Orchard Business District) adestination.
Business owners in all of thedistricts hope to see lots of shoppersthrough their doors this Small Business
Saturday. Some businesses will berunning specials for the occasion.
The city (of Webster Groves) isproud and embraces these businesses, and the community is very responsiveto shopping local and supportingtheir hometown businesses, saidRichards, who also chairs the BusinessDevelopment Commission for the cityof Webster Groves.
Although local business districtsdo a tremendous amount for theirmembers, Poe said shes grateful aprestigious company is doing its partto help small businesses.
Even though we have our ownefforts, we cant match the marketingpower of American Express, shesaid. The efforts they have made tocall attention to small business hashad a wonderful effect on our smallbusinesses.
