Running a retail business isn’t limited to selling merchandise, generating customers, and driving revenue anymore. There are many other aspects of retailing that need significant attention and one of them is shoplifting.

Retail theft is a common yet critical problem that can have a drastic impact on the bottom line of a retail business. While there is no shortage of advanced software and security devices in the market, it’s not easy for small businesses and start-ups to invest in such expensive solutions.

With that in mind, we researched and pulled together a number of cost-effective yet proven tactics to reduce the chances of shoplifting in your retail store and protect your retail assets.

Organization

For some retailers, it is difficult or almost impossible to figure out whether something’s gone missing from the store, let along catching the shoplifter.  A messy and disorganised store is an easy target for thieves and burglars. You got to keep your shop display organised enough to spot the unusual or missing effortlessly.

A few tricks you could use to maintain a high level of organisation and product placement include:

Use lockable shop fittings and display units to store expensive items.

Incorporate different levels of height into shop display for enhanced visibility.

Try to change and move your displays every couple of weeks so that the setting is not very obvious and mundane.

Avoid creating monochromatic displays. Have your merchandise grouped by colours to make one group of items stand out against the other one.

than actually shopping. They take multiple items into the dressing room only to leave with one. They seem nervous and avoid being noticed. Pick up random items uninterestingly and put them back repeatedly.Wear unusually oversized clothes and carry large bags.
