FALL 2012 Shop the bee is a bi-annual online magazine that presents the best handmade of the

season from the beehive.

Each issue will update the reader on their favorite designers, fashion, home-finds, diy tips,

recipes from local food purveyors, and all the best things local and independently

When you ask a beehive designer to describe the store, they most likely start out by stating that we’re a

collective or community of local designers that live in the city of Atlanta. These facts are true. the beehive works

in a way that allows us to fall under the traditional definition of “community,” in that we all share the common

interests of creating and building a small creative business in the city of Atlanta. But to me, the definition of

community within the beehive means so much more. It means the giving of true, unmitigated, and (sometimes)

unrequited time and effort. It means that as a designer you see the bigger picture and are willing to do what it

takes to ensure everyone’s success within the store. It’s idealistic. And with the right mix, it’s possible. To me, it

means creating a family out of a community.

All of the smiling faces to your left are of beehivers, taken over the past year as we all were out-and-about

building our businesses at local festivals. At these events, you’ll typically find an entire row of beehivers,

selling each-other’s work, cross-promoting and selling with each other, and watching each other’s wares (and

backs) when need be. To help to ensure that our community stays sound, Beehivers choose to be a part of the

store, and in doing so also choose to commit their time, effort, and energy in ensuring - in whatever way they are

able - the visibility and growth of the store. Not only is doing so tantamount to the growth of their personal sales

and market share of customers within the store, but it helps to spread the word and build all of our businesses in

the general marketplace, as well.

Because of this, I view the beehive as a true community in every sense of the word and choose to add a bit to

Webster’s definition to better define exactly what we are: We are a group of people working toward a

common goal, with a common intention, with a true sense of altruism infused within our actions. Without the

willing support of all the designers contained within, I can clearly say that the beehive would not be the

success it is today. So thank you, beehive community, for all that you have done to grow us to where we are

today, and for all we will do together in the years to come.

That said, I’d like to give special acknowledgement to those designers who helped to bring this issue of

Shop the Bee to fruition. Brooke Helfen, our wonderful Store Manager and creator of SoSheSews took the

beautiful model photos in our Wear section, while the creator of Orangeberry Baby, Shanna Kenyon, provided

the oh-so-cute baby photos in our Babies and Kiddies section. Jewelry designer extraordinaire, Madeline Smiles, is

the gorgeous model in the Wear photos, and Julia Farrill, of stationary and housewares line, Red Bird Ink, so

graciously allowed me in the studio to learn how she works for the Studio Tour section. Thank you, one and all.

eavy Machinery is what operates daily in Julia Farrill’s working

studio space where she creates her popular handmade stationary

line, Red Bird Ink. Set in a surreally quaint looking pink storefront, in

a very scenic part of old Conyers, GA, I spent some time with Julia

to discuss her craft, talk about her space, and to see how she works.

Why the name Red Bird Ink? I have always loved animals and had a particular fascination with birds. When I was a little girl a cardinal used to come sit

on my windowsill and I would spend hours watching and talking with him. Since then a family of cardinals has lived in my

garden in Blacksburg, and now in Atlanta. While I was starting Red Bird Ink a pair of cardinals was building a nest near our

house. The female's right leg and foot did not work so she would carefully land with one foot grabbing the branch and then

settling her body down to stay upright. She then meticulously gathered branches from the dogwood by my window to build

her nest, grasping little twigs with her beak and moving her head back and forth until the branch broke and she flew

away. Often, she fell to the ground because one foot was not enough grip to keep her on the branch. Throughout this the

male cardinal was flying around not helping at all. I was starting to get frustrated with him and then he swooped down to

catch a bug, flew over to the female and fit to her. It was amazing to watch. We've moved the design studio since then by

still have nesting cardinals here! They teach their babies to fly, hunt for sunflower seed in our bird feeder swoop around the

magnolias, dogwoods and camellias in our garden.

What’s your inspiration behind your line (why do you do what you do?)

I adore paper and ink. The world endlessly inspires me to create new designs. My background in Landscape Architecture

has a big influence on my work. Botanicals in particular are fascinating to study, sketch and illustrate. I'm also intrigued by

insects, maps, patterns, fabric, cultural elements... almost anything can be my new source of inspirational fuel.

How would you describe the feel of your studio? Our print studio in Olde Town Conyers has a lot of history. It's an old barber shop, turned candy shop, turned print shop. The

exterior is bright pink store front, left over from the candy shop days, and we kept the two tone pink pole inside too. The rest is

bright clean white with the original black and white floors. We like to keep the studio walls pretty spare and bright so we

can accurately mix ink and see the tiny details in our print work. Music is always on at the studio, it sets the tone for the day

and keeps us moving. On a nice day we open the doors and you might hear Etta James flowing out as you walk by. Our

three big old printing presses take up most of the space and when they are running the studio is humming!

Our design studio is an extra room in our house which is in Decatur. We do all of our design, packaging and shipping from

the Decatur studio. It's also a clean white space but filled with stacks of finished letterpress pieces ready to be packed up

and shipped out into the world.

How do you handle creating in the amount of space you have? Oh how I wish for more space! As Red Bird Ink has grown we've quickly filled up every square inch of space, but have been

able to rearrange to make it work. Eventually we hope to move to a larger location.

What are your future plans for the growth of your line? We are looking forward to introducing a new line with more work from Lucy Laliberte, the mastermind behind our pig & cow

prints. Another element we are hoping to introduce soon are a few fabric products.

What are your studio essentials? What couldn’t you create without? Our fabulous giant old printing presses, lots of rulers, lots of ink, paper, Pandora, coffee, a nice sharp blade on our paper

cutter, a notebook and pencils.

What business advice would you have about your product process for other indie

designers like yourself? Do what you do because you love it, not because you can. When you feel overwhelmed with inspiration, then take a deep

breath and dive in. Try to let your designer-self find balance with your business-self.
