A dReAMtHINKSpeAK PRODUCTION COMMISSIONED BY SHOREDITCH TOWN HALL, LIFT & LEFTCOAST

ABSeNtdates: Mon 24 August – Sun 25 Octoberpreviews: 24 – 31 Augusttimes: Mon-Fri: Various times from 6pm Sat-Sun: Various times from 12pmtickets: Mon-Thu: £12.50 Fri-Sun: £15.50

An intimate promenade dreamscape, created by dreamthinkspeak, threading its way through the maze-like basements of Shoreditch Town Hall.

A young woman enters a hotel. She is magnetic and compelling, yet strangely detached, as if in a dream; she knows everyone, yet is utterly alone; she has many lovers, but loves no one; she is 18 years old – or is she 80?

ABSENT is partly inspired by The Dutchess of Argyll’s residence at a central London hotel from the 1970’s until the 80’s, when she was finally evicted having run out of friends and credit.

ABSENT is a multi-layered journey mixing film, installation and a haunting soundscape by Lapalux to create an increasingly labyrinthine dream world that merges past, present and future.

IRA BRAND

Be GeNtLe WItH Medates: Fri 6 - Sat 7 Novembertimes: Fri 7pm & Sat 7.30pm tickets: £11

“I had days where I was in less pain and days when I was in more pain. But I always had pain. Every single day of those eighteen years.”

Be Gentle With Me is about notions of ‘illness’ and ‘health’. About what it means to be ‘healthy’ or ‘unwell’, how we share – or don’t share – our experiences of health, and what it is like to be ‘sick’. It considers illness that is long term or sudden, critical or everyday, as well as related ideas around hereditariness, the nature of pain, and our bodies as changing, fluctuating things.

Ira Brand is an artist, writer and theatre-maker. She creates live performances that are rooted in a fascination with what it means and feels like to be human. Unlike much of her previous work, Be Gentle With Me is presented here as a work in development.

And red lipstick.

dates: Mon 9 - Fri 13 Novembertimes: Mon-Thu: 8pm; Fri: 7.30pm tickets: £12.50

What would you do if everyone in the world hated you? Would you run? Would you fight? Or would you try to make them laugh?

Donald Robertson has no mates and he isn’t funny. But with guidance from his new mentor Gary, he hopes that this is all about to change.

Writer/performer Gary McNair’s acclaimed monologue weaves a classic coming-of-age story with a pinpoint deconstruction of the darker side of stand-up comedy. Donald Robertson Is Not A Stand-Up Comedian was an award-winning sell-out hit at the Traverse Theatre at last year’s Edinburgh Festival.

In association with Shoreditch Town Hall

Experimental arts and new media platform Electronic Voice Phenomena returns for a series of electrifying nights in London and Liverpool, featuring the very best in spoken word, performance, music and technology.

The EVP Sessions takes its inspiration from Konstantin Raudive’s notorious ‘Breakthrough’ experiments of the 1970s, in which he divined voices-from-beyond in electronic noise. The result is a ‘mind-boggling’, ‘perplexingly good’ cabaret of avant-garde performance, hauntology – and technology-inspired live art, installation and music.

HUNT & DARTON

BORedOMdates: Thu 19 - Fri 20 Novembertimes: 8pmtickets: £12.50

The most exciting theatre show about boredom ever?

Boredom is an exploration into the highs and lows of being bored. Embrace it, combat it or simply acknowledge it, boredom affects all of us at some time or other. And Hunt & Darton find that rather interesting. Blending multi media, story telling and performance art Hunt & Darton set the pace with new moves, some wise words, ‘you do it bits’, Holly’s bored face and lots of visual stimuli in case anyone, well, gets bored. Hunt & Darton think it is a good idea to get bored and actively encourage you do to. It might just change your life.

Award winning artists Hunt & Darton are a Live Art Collaboration between Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton.

I want to tell a story – well, my family’s story. Some of it may be true and some may not. There was a song my mom used to sing to me, which her father sang to her. It may have been Irish (that’s where he came from) or even American (that’s where I come from). Or possibly Scottish (weird, because none of us are from Scotland).

With live folk music, this show is for anyone who has ever tried to untangle a family anecdote, or wished they knew more about where they came from.

Developed with The Lowry and supported by The Albany.

KNeeHIGH WITH LIVERPOOL EVERYMAN & PLAYHOUSE

deAd dOG IN A SUItcASe (ANd OtHeR LOve SONGS) A NEW BEGGAR’S OPERALONDON PREMIERE

Written by Carl Grose Music by Charles Hazlewood Directed by Mike Shepherd

dates: Wed 2 - Sat 12 Decembertimes: Mon-Sat: 7.30pm; Sat 5, Wed 9 & Sat 12: 2.30pm tickets: full price £25, £20, £15 concs £20, £16, £12 school groups 10+: £16 groups 10+: Book 10, get 1 free

The ever inventive Kneehigh return with their blazing new show. Fasten your seat belts; it’s going to be one hell of a night!

Mayor Goodman has been assassinated. Contract killer Macheath has just married Pretty Polly Peachum and Mr and Mrs Peachum aren’t happy. Not one bit. Based on the Beggar’s Opera, John Gay’s classic musical satire, Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs) is busting with wit, wonder and weirdness. An extraordinary Kneehigh cast of actor musicians shoot, hoot and shimmy their way through this twisted morality tale of our times... by turns SHOCKING, HILARIOUS, HEARTFELT and ABSURD.

Echoing Gay’s original, the live score plunders the sounds of our times. Trip hop combines with folk, Renaissance polyphony with psychedelia, ska with grime and dubstep to create a gorgeous and powerful musical mix.

What the HELL is the world coming to? This is now, this is it The world is poor and man’s a shit The game is rigged, nothing’s truer Death’s a joke and life’s a sewer!

aware that as a Grade II listed building which is still developing as a venue, some areas have very limited accessibility for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments. We have a lift from pavement level to the ground floor of the building, allowing for access to the Council Chamber, Mayors Parlour and accessible toilet.

• There is limited access to the Assembly Hall via 32 broad steps, with two landings and continuous bannisters. People with lesser mobility impairments may find them relatively easy to climb. A mechanical stairclimber is available for the Assembly Hall steps, which is only suitable for certain wheelchairs. We need to advise that this is a far from satisfactory means of climbing and that some wheelchair users may not be happy using this equipment.

• The Committee Rooms are accessible via 28 steps, with two landings and continuous bannisters.

• Please note: The Town Hall is in the final stages of scheduling the next phase of capital works, which will include installation of a passenger lift to improve access. We are aiming to complete these works by early 2016.
