elcome to the second short fiction writing challenge

for The First Expedition; a (roughly!) quarterlyinvitation to write a piece of fiction set within the

31st Millennium. This is intended as a chance foraspiring writers to share their short fiction with theforum for constructive critique and  –  perhaps more

importantly –  appreciation!

In addition, a few Expeditionaries (that's you!)

have requested a more combative approach, sowe're pleased to announce our first competition,

which will run alongside the challenge (see below

for details).

Submission and unveiling

For these reasons, we encourage early finishers tosubmit their challenge work to

TFEmods(at)gmail(dot)com, with the subject line'Writing Challenge 2 [your name]'.

If you wish to enter the competition, submit your

work to the same address, with the subject line'Writing Competition 2 [your name]'.

We will then post the challenge work publicly (not

anonymously, as before) in a dedicated thread, at

the rate of one piece per week, starting from one

month after the opening of the challenge (or after

the first submission, as appropriate). In the instance

that we have more submissions than remaining

weeks, we will increase the posting frequencyappropriately based upon the dates we receive your

work –

so there is an incentive for being brave andsubmitting your work early, but no disadvantage isoffered to those who prefer to work right up to the

deadline.

We will post the competition work anonymously

in a separate dedicated thread all together, the dayafter the deadline.

Challenge feedback  Once a piece is posted, we encourage all our

members to offer constructive critique about the piece. When submitting your work, please let

Hyperion or Apologist know whether you would prefer Open Critique, or Guided Critique.

Open Critique is asking for freeform critique;

everything from 'nice work!' to an essay. The Moderating

team ask all Members to bear the forum rules in

mind at all times  –  the intention of Open Critique is

to allow readers and reviewers free reign in how

they respond to the work; not an invitation to

ignore the basic rules of politeness! Open Critique

is recommended for more experienced writers who

want more direct feedback to their work.

Guided Critique will require all readers andreviewers to follow a question and answer format

in their review. It is intended to encourage newwriters, and provide a slightly more directed –  butlimited –  way of having your work reviewed.

Responses to submissions that request Guided

Critique will be required to be made their replies in

the following format.

QUOTE (Guided critique)Pace: ?/5

Characterisation: ?/5

Structure: ?/5

Favourite bit: [brief sentence/paragraph]

Weakest bit: [brief sentence/paragraph]

Suggestion for improvement: [briefsentence/paragraph]

Don't change: [brief sentence/paragraph]

The moderating team will clearly mark whether

reponses are to follow Open or Guided critique.

Millennium period of the Warhammer 40,000

universe.

Word limit: Up to 2000 words.

Prompt: 'Along came a spider'.

Challenge: Use the prompt as a theme for your

story. You don't  need to include the text in your

writing, though you can if you wish. Perhaps thetheme might be someone trying to escape from a

metaphorical web of deceit. Perhaps a character is

hit by an hallucinogen grenade, or is the leader of a

spider cult! Perhaps Malcador the Sigilite or

Maloghurst the Twisted demonstrates his more

manipulative qualities... Please regard the prompt

as an open-ended one. It's a concept rather than adirective.

The rewards Aside from the plaudits of the crowd, at the end of

the challenge, we will gather all the entries together

and save them for posterity in a pinned post in the

Remembrancer's Tavern. We hope this willgradually build up into a core of work from our

members and guests to enjoy.

Final deadline: November 29th 2013

Remember, all remaining stories will be posted

simultaneously on November 30th; so you need toget your story in earlier unless you are happy to

have your work posted alongside others.

Best of luck –

we look forward to seeing yourstuff!
