The Short Stay Program is a short-term training
program aimed at nurturing talented personnel that
can contribute to the economical and environmental
development of mineral resources in their respective
countries. This program first began in 2011, and since
then we have held this program every year; inviting
international students from partner universities to
visit Akita. Over 100 students have participated in this
program so far. The program consists of field trips,
lectures, and tutorials; and participants can also enjoy
and experience Japanese and Akita culture.
Overview of the Program
Welcome to the
ICREMER Short Stay ProgramICREMER Director’s Message
Welcome to the 2021 ICREMER Short Stay Program.
This program will cover a wide array of indispensable
specialized areas of study surrounding resource development
and utilization. The objective of this program is to enable
you to contribute to the economical and environmental
development of natural resources in your respective
countries. In addition to successfully completing this
program, I hope that you will also develop solid and
enduring relationships with other participating students
throughout the program.

ICREMER and Akita University
The tradition of Akita University dates back to 1910, when the Akita Mining College was
established to train engineers in the exploration of underground resources. Over the
subsequent 100 years, Akita University has played a leading role in education and research
of resource sciences in Japan. In 2009, Akita University established the International Center
for Research and Education on Mineral and Energy Resource (ICREMER) and the new
faculty of International Resource Sciences in 2014 based on our achievements and
experiences. The faculty provides the only foundation in Japan where students can
consistently and systematically learn "the course from resource investigation/development
to environmental recycling". This faculty’s distinctive feature is the integration of the fields
of both the Social Sciences/Humanities and the Hard Sciences, resulting in cutting-edge
education and studies, which are provided to not only Japanese students but students from
other countries as well.

I was introduced to the Economic Geology Laboratory. I had the opportunity to use their fluid inclusion microthermometry machine as well as their sample preparation equipment during the Short Stay Program. This program is a wonderful opportunity to meet other fellow researchers from other countries that focus on different fields of resource science. Interact and exchange ideas with them. Make the most of your stay in Akita, stay curious and don’t forget to have fun!

By participating in this program, my knowledge has become more extensive. To visit to Osarizawa Mine Park helped me to imagine more about the old mining system. And permission to use Rocscience software was good for me because I use it for my current research.I hope this program can help you to get many new
friends and learn from them. Adapt as quickly as possible, multiply connection with people around. And most importantly take advantage of time in Japan. Because the program time is very short. Don't waste your time, and enjoy Japan!
I graduated my PhD in Mineral Economics under the supervision of Professor Adachi from Akita University. Prior to my graduate studies I participated in the Short Stay Program, an opportunity that presented me an interest in the field of mineral economics. During the program I did a mini-research in mineral economics. Indeed the Short Stay Program played a critical role in my career development by exposing me to other fields related to geology which was my undergraduate field of study.
