MBV BOARD HIGHLIGHTSBy Peter Cavoto, President

Bill Duncan, of Duncan Coors Architects, was at the June 27 Board meeting to explain the replotting process. When in 2002 MBV acquired the Sunset, previous Shea Sales Office, it had a residential zoning. That zoning remained until we submitted plans for remodel. Those plans were submitted to the county in March and much negotiation has occurred to achieve an agreement that the building can be zoned 5B commercial along with the remainder of our campus. It will take at least 30-45 days for the official approval for the Sunset to become part of our campus. The parking issue is another division of the county but we can expect an opinion by August. Thank you to all who have participated in the Sunset, Library and Office input collection and analysis by Keith Charpentier and the Planning Committee and Audrey Morganegg and the Design and Décor Committee. George Brown, Dan O’Brien, and Dick Powers, MBV resident architects provided much needed professional consultation. Madonna Schelot, the original interior designer, who picked the green chairs we all love in the Sunset room is also using her expertise to support these committees. Her design resources and expertise have already saved us money on the pool loungers providing a safe alternative to the original ones. The final unsafe loungers should be

picked up by the end of June before you receive and read this. Jay Raleigh, AV leader and member of the communications

steering committee, used a similar group input process of all AV users to determine the needs for upgrades in the Superstition Center. These recommendations and cost effective analysis will enhance the usage of many groups and all residents. The Board approved replacement of the present microphones and an additional 8 so that all would be on the new required frequency.

There will be condensation tests taken in the Superstition center to help solve the leakage and floor issue. Our manager and Building and Grounds will analyze this data. Building and Grounds has9 completed the monument lighting. Take a look after dark as they have spent hours checking to make sure it is adequate for us. B&G also recommended a ramp from the golf cart parking to Indigo that was approved but will not be installed until finalization of Sunset plan.

Our Board thanks you for the opportunity to serve you. We welcome your questions, concerns, input and involvement. Please feel free to email all of us at [email protected] or if you have a concern that is maintenance related, such as a light bulb, please fill out a work order form at the office.

MBV Board Minutes for 5/30/2017 Submitted by BOD secretary, Pam Ingram

Meeting called to order by Peter Cavoto, President. Janet Swaim, Pam Ingram and Wayne Walworth present. Ed Butler and Jan Pitts present by phone. Board meeting minutes and committee reports and minutes unanimously approved. Peter stated during the Presidents report that Building and Grounds will be looking at the loose wood in the Superstition center and further Pickle ball recommendations. He then introduced Bill Duncan our architect for the Sunset who explained the plotting process. See Board Highlights for further detail.

Suzanne Murray, Manager, reported the FOB updates were completed, that due to a truck mix up all loungers were not picked up but should be by the end of June and there will be a condensation study of the Superstition.

The COY contract was renewed for another year with unanimous approval and noted they have not raised their prices in several years. The blue loungers will be purchased by Indian Summer Condos when our new loungers arrive.

These are the following committee recommendations:1. Ramp from golf cart parking to Indigo Drive approved 4:2, Wayne

and Ed dissenting.2. Waterfall Monument lighting successfully completed with unanimous

approval. 3. Responsibility for the repair and maintenance of walls and or fences

of perimeter walls are outlined and should be painted the same color as the theme color of the neighborhood. Unanimous approval. See architectural or assistant manager for any clarification.

4. Screen door architectural change unanimously approved see architectural guidelines.

5. 8 replacement wireless microphones plus two handheld in the new frequency approved unanimously to be paid out of reserve funding.

6. 8 new wireless microphones plus two handheld in the new frequency approved unanimously to be paid out of future development. Three bids received, the lowest bid approved.

7. 2016 operating surplus of $40,000 to be moved to Future Development and $39,301 to reserves.

Those Pesky CC&RsLET’S CHAT ABOUT SUMMERTIME AT MBV

By Debbie O’BrienI happen to like the heat, well, to an extent. When it’s over 110

degrees, I’m kind of ready for it to cool down some. I was born in Alaska, we only lived there 2 years and it’s no surprise that I really don’t like the cold. With the heat and the spring rains and that blasting hot Arizona wind, the weeds go crazy, tree branches are breaking off, dogs don’t want to go outside for a walk and the trash cans are smelling up the garage. Of course, the Village is quieter with the winter residents gone for the summer. And we’re wishing we were sitting on a porch by the beach in San Diego with a good book.

You would think it’s not as busy in the office in the summer. But then we get calls about the weeds that have taken over the neighbor’s yard and the trash cans that are sitting out in front of the garage all the time. The common area maintenance work orders are plentiful, broken branches from the wind are falling in back yards and in the wash. It seems that especially in July we hear about sprinkler system pipes that have cracked and turned into skyward shooting fountains in your yard and running down the street.

If you have someone watching your house for the summer, give the office their name and phone number so we can contact them first when there’s water running out of your yard. We hate to have to call and get you in a panic about a broken sprinkler head. Have your landscaping company get to work on the weeds and trim the trees. We’d love to see you at an Architectural meeting talking about building a trash can enclosure next to your house.

Is that you Leonard?

This, That & Other Things

Thank GOD there’s a name for this disorder.

Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden.

As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that

I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table, Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,

And notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back

On the table and take out the garbage first...

But then I think, Since I’m going to be near the mailbox When I take out the garbage anyway,

I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table, And see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where

I find the can of Diet Coke I’d been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks, But first I need to push the Diet Coke aside So that I don’t accidentally knock it over.

The Diet Coke is getting warm, And I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Diet Coke, A vase of flowers on the counter

Catches my eye--they need water.

I put the Diet Coke on the counter and Discover my reading glasses that

I’ve been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, But first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, Fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.

Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV,I’ll be looking for the remote,

But I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,

But first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, But quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table, Get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to Remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: The car isn’t washed, The bills aren’t paid,

There is a warm can of Diet Coke sitting on the counter, The flowers don’t have enough water,

There is still only 1 check in my check book, I can’t find the remote, I can’t find my glasses,

And I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,

I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day, And I’m really tired.

Congratulations to Karleen Huffman. My Dad died ten years ago this month. My mother, still going strong at age 86, is excessively organized & intolerant of clutter. The spices in her cupboard are arranged alphabetically (labels facing out), but since she is not a cook, it is easy to find the three spices she stocks (cinnamon, salt, & pepper) without knowing the alphabet.

What is the thread that binds these two facts together? Within days of Dad’s death, Mom started the process of throwing out his ‘things’. The garage was pretty barren by the time we got there: golf cart sold, tool box given away, & car wash supplies gone. I was a little sad as many of

my fondest memories involve those ‘things’. My dad was the one who taught me to golf, he helped me build forts & science projects, and we spent many a Saturday morning washing the family car.

But there in the corner was my Dad’s golf bag. Mom said, “Take whatever you want; I’m giving what’s left to the neighbor.” I snatched up a few golf clubs & snared the ball washer. Most of the clubs now reside in an extra golf bag we keep for guests in the garage, but Dad’s nine wood lives in my golf bag, sentimental yes, but still the perfect club on occasion.

So, it was with extreme delight last Tuesday, while playing with the MountainBrook ladies , almost ten years to the day of dad’s death, that I stood on Mountain Brook’s # 4 tee box, pulled out Dad’s nine wood, and got my first hole-in-one. Thanks, Dad; I know you were also cheering as the ball rolled across the green and into the hole.

Kitchen PrayerGod Bless my little kitchen,

I love its every nook; And Bless me as I do my work,

Wash Pots & Pans & Cook. And may the meals that I prepare

Be seasoned from above,With thy Great Blessings & Thy Grace;

But most of all Thy Love. So, Bless my little Kitchen, God,

And those who enter in,May they find naught but Joy & Peace

And Happiness therein.

BRIDGE WITH MBV

Golf WITH MBVSummer Classes, Groups and Clubs (CGnCs) CHANGESJune, July and August the Mountaineer will be allocated

half the pages we are allowed the rest of the year. So, to find more space, we have cut the CGnCs to less than the 150 words previously allocated. We also deleted all CGnCs that are not active during the summer. The person or group that is responsible for the winter CGnCs that have been deleted will

be responsible for sending in a new announcement by the 25th of the month prior to the Mountaineer in which you want the

announcement printed. If you have more information that you want made public during the summer, i.e., winners of

games, you can post the complete article on the MBV website at [email protected]. Sorry for the inconvenience, Your

Book Discussion for Juneby Peggy Malsom

My summer reading fest continues as I revisit a favorite historical friend. The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by Candice Millard details the former president’s exploration of an unchartered tributary of the Amazon River. It was dangerous, death-defying and “bully”. If you haven’t previously read about TR, please read Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough first to more fully

appreciate this extraordinary American.

Helping the HelplessBy Shannon McConville

Anyone who knows me, knows I am an animal lover. My passion is dogs. I am allergic to dogs and cats so my family and friends think I am out of my mind. I often agree.

In 2012, Matt and I started volunteering at a local dog rescue. It was a lot of hard work, yet, so rewarding finding these poor lost animals loving homes. In 2015. we started our own rescue. It has its daily challenges, as we deal with the “hard to adopt” dogs. They are on the euthanasia list due to fear, aggression or medical issues. They also bring us unimaginable joy.

These animals may have never had a kind word or touch from a human. Bringing them into our home and seeing a petrified dog learn to trust and just be a dog makes our hearts fill. Matt is amazing with these animals, he has a special connection I have never seen before. They look at him and you can see a calm come over them.

He has taken dogs old dogs or dogs with “no hope” medical issues, merely to give them the last few days of love and compassion when their owners have failed them and dumped them. He sits with them at the vet while they cross the rainbow bridge. I selfishly leave that to him; my heart can’t take it.

Summer is the worst time for animal shelters, they have higher intake numbers due to dogs lost during the 4th of July, inexperienced dog sitters accidentally letting them escape, and families just turning them in because they are going on vacation. Unfortunately, they are over capacity with barely any funding which forces them to euthanize these sweet souls.

Animal Shelter workers are unsung heroes. They take on this horrendous task with compassion, dignity and humanity. They run specials during the summer just to avoid this heartbreaking reality.

Make sure your animals are chipped and have an id tag so you can be reunited with your loving companion.

“Adopt, don’t shop” Pinal County and Apache Junction shelters have companions just waiting to love you. If you need help finding one to love, we would be happy to help.

It literally takes a village to save animals, everyone can do a small part.
