The ASA Board of Directors is dedi-cated to openly communicating withthe membership and requested the fol-lowing Board Statement be published:

“Recently the property surroundingthe building that the ASA owns anduses as their office has been purchasedand slated for development. The groupdeveloping the properties approachedthe ASA board with an offer for pur-chase. Considering excessive andunused space in the existing building, upkeep of an older building and poten-tial detrimental change in the area theASA board felt it was their responsibili-ty to membership to seek representationfrom a listing agent and explore the pos-sibility of relocating to a more appropri-ately sized, modernized site that is ben-eficial for the ASA administrationoffice. As the development of the areabecomes more imminent and preservingthe asset of the ASA takes shape inpotential relocation the board of direc-tors will keep the membershipinformed. Argentine Genetics Opportunity Sells for $35,000by Chandler Steele

American Shorthorn Association President Mike Bennett wel-comes Argentine Shorthorn breeder Héctor Mario Eyherabide tothe U.S. with gifts from Michigan Shorthorn BreedersAssociation and American Shorthorn Association.

Shorthorn cattle breeders Little Cedar Cattle Co., Michiganand Cabaña Santa Cecilia, Argentina join with the buyers ofthe “Elite Argentine Genetics Opportunity,” Jimmy and SelenaMcGuire, South River Genetics, Oklahoma.South River Genetics bid $35,000.00 US to share in an

embryo transfer flush of the two Shorthorn females, Elvira and Potranca, bred by Cabaña Santa Cecilia and owned

with Little Cedar Cattle Co. Left to right: Lynn Ewald, SteveFrench, Héctor Mario Eyherabide, Julie French, Selena McGuire,

Jimmy McGuire, Jay Ewald, and Francisco Eyherabide.“We must dream. We must imagine.

We must create.” This quote by Detroittech entrepreneur Josh Linker perfectlydescribes the shared vision of Steve andJulie French of Little Cedar Cattle Co.,Michigan, and Héctor MarioEyherabide of Cabaña Santa Cecilia,Argentina. Together, they have part-nered to bring a new wave of Shorthorngenetics from Argentina to the UnitedStates. Since their arrival in Argentina in

1826 from England, the Shorthornbreed was known for fleshing ability, maternal traits, and feed efficiency.Economic production traits are the solidfoundation on which the highly func-tional breed was built. “Today, Argentina’s beef industry is

made up of large herds of cattle that uti-lize A.I. to produce huge contemporarygroups of progeny that allow them tomake genetic progress in the most pro-gressive herds. Their environments arenot that much different than what wefind in the U.S., so those genetics couldbe utilized in the U.S. to makeprogress,” said Jack Ward, COO andDirector of Breed Improvement at theAmerican Hereford Association. Ward further explained, “I have

judged shows for Angus, Hereford andShorthorn on multiple occasions inArgentina, and I find their cattle to be

fundamentally sound, with the rightkind of balance of muscle, growth andfleshing ability.” Eyherabide has been raising

Shorthorns for more than 50 years inthe vast cattle country of Argentina. Hisfirst contact with Shorthorns was asyoung boy on his maternal grandfather’sfarm. At 15, his father gave him aShorthorn heifer from one of the mostrenowned herds of the time. Up to the 1960s Shorthorns had been

the dominant beef breed in Argentina, but then they started to lose prestigeand leadership as the largest herdschanged to Angus. When he startedbreeding Shorthorns as a teenager dur-ing this time of transition, Eyherabidewas going against a very strong currentof change. Many people in the cattlebusiness laughed at him.In 1972, after participating in some

smaller shows, he courageously decidedto take his Shorthorns to ExposiciónRural de Palermo, which is Argentina’slargest and most important agriculturalevent, and known throughout theworld. In that first exhibition over fortyyears ago, Eyherabide’s Shorthorn bull

calf was named champion bull and hisheifer won reserve grand championfemale. Since then he has exhibitedShorthorns at Palermo annually and haswon countless championship titles. By the early 1980s, the demand for

Shorthorns in the commercial beefindustry of Argentina had deterioratedto the extent that Eyherabide came tothe U.S. in search of opportunities tointroduce American sire genetics intohis breeding program. He was encour-aged by leading U.S. breeders such asBarry Jordan, Ric Hoyt and JackRagsdale, as well as ASA ExecutiveSecretary Dr. Roger Hunsley, and uti-lized the influence of the AmericanShorthorn breed to help createShorthorns that would satisfy thedemands of Argentine commercial beefbreeders. Extremely selective regarding the eco-

nomically important traits of fertilityand ruggedness, Eyherabide worked atbreeding and developing a Shorthornrange bull that would be acceptable inthe market, and prove to produce thehigh quality beef for which the breedwas once known.(continued on page 12)

In 1987 he held his first successfulauction of 35 Shorthorn range bulls. By2001 the demand for his Shorthornbulls had increased to create a sale offer-ing of 600 Shorthorn bulls. He nowmarkets almost 1,000 bulls each year tocommercial producers while producingand selecting high quality seedstock toadvance the Shorthorn breed’s place inthe competitive and demandingArgentine beef industry. Cabaña SantaCecilia is still a highly respected andsuccessful show ring competitor atPalermo, nowadays of both Shorthornsand Angus.Bred by Eyherabide, the full sisters

LEAVE Elvira X1013ET and LEAVEPotranca X1015ET earned an array ofawards at the 2014 Exposición Rural dePalermo in late July. They were champi-on and reserve champion in their divi-sion as well as champion pair of heifers.Elvira advanced to third best femaleoverall behind the grand champion andreserve grand champion females. Elviraand Potranca are owned in partnershipwith Steve and Julie French who wereon hand to witness the heifers’ showring success at Palermo. At the 2014 Great Shorthorn Revival,

Cabaña Santa Cecilia and Little CedarCattle Co., offered an embryo transferflush of either Elvira or Potranca, or halfinterest in the flushes of both. Thefemales produced their first calves inearly September just days before theyturned two. For their first flush, theywill be bred to the leading ArgentineShorthorn bull, Alston Polar Star, thedominant sire of the 2014 PalermoShow, and his popular son Roosmo

Matias Star who earned third best bulloverall in 2014. Jimmy and Selena McGuire of South

River Genetics, Shawnee, Okla., pur-chased the flush of the Argentinefemales for $35,000. “The deciding fac-tor for me was meeting Héctor Mario atthe Revival and seeing the excitement hehas about his Shorthorn cattle,” saidJimmy McGuire. The Oklahoma couplechose to share in the flush of bothfemales with Little Cedar and CabañaSanta Cecilia, which will be performedin Argentina in late 2014 or early 2015. It has been Eyherabide’s lifelong

dream to breed the perfect Shorthornbull. Continuously working to improveboth genotypic value and phenotypicappeal have made Cabaña Santa Ceciliaa paternal production powerhouseacross Argentina and other parts ofSouth America. “You can’t findShorthorn bulls like his in the UnitedStates,” said Steve French. “They’re big-footed, masculine bulls that have a lot ofnatural thickness, and incredible feedefficiency. You hear everyone say howgood the Argentine cattle are, but untilyou get down there and see them withyour own two eyes, you don’t realizehow impressive they are.” Producers who witnessed the offering

at the Revival sale heard the breeders’goal to potentially strengthen the foun-dation of the Shorthorn breed in theU.S. with a new, proven genetic line. One breeder on hand for the auction ofwas Mike Bennett, American ShorthornAssociation president, from California.“What they are doing with the

Shorthorn breed down there has a realplace in improving the genetics and the

performance of cattle here in the UnitedStates,” said Bennett. “The plan to sharetheir genetics is exciting and shows theprogressiveness of not only HéctorMario and his son Francisco, but alsopeople like Steve and Julie, who wentthere and recognized what their cattlehave to offer. I am looking forward tobig things from this exchange.” The future of Argentine Shorthorn

genetics in the United States is powerednot only by the tried-and-true success ofreal world Argentine cattle, but also bythe individuals working to share thosegenetics with American cattle produc-ers. “There is also a strong desire among

breeders in our country to create aShorthorn bull that will satisfy our com-mercial market,” continued French. “Ifwe can get a great Shorthorn bull out ofone of the flushes we intend to make hisgenetics affordable and available to any-one who wants to use him. This onestep will bring Hector Mario’s dream of‘Toro Perfecto’ completely full circle.” Speaking of his Shorthorn genetics

partnership with Steve and Julie French, that now includes Jimmy and SelenaMcGuire, Héctor Mario Eyherabidesaid, “Life has brought us togetherbecause I think we have the samedreams, the same imagination and thesame creativity itself.” The innovative breeding project that

the breeders from Argentina, Michiganand Oklahoma are embarking on leavesno doubt that the Shorthorn breed oftomorrow has an incredibly brightfuture, across all borders.

=Junior Corner

As I round out my last year on JuniorBoard, I can do nothing, but smile. Ithink of all the opportunities thatJunior Board has provided me with andI can only hope that everyone takes thechance to try and experience it forthemselves. I have met multiple breedproducers and developed many relation-ships because of this given opportunity, and it’s something I will always keepclose to my heart. This experience hasalso provided me with friendships that Ican connect with on many different lev-els because I share so much more of thesame interests. My biggest fear whenrunning for the Junior Board was nevermaking the board, but then I thought tomyself, “If I don’t try now … then howwill I ever know what was to become ofit?” I think that’s everyone’s biggestfear… denial. The worst thing, when allis considered, is that you never gaveyourself the shot and you must alwayslive with not knowing your own success. So why not just give yourself thechance? In my first article for theShorthorn Country I wrote, “If yourdreams don’t scare you, then they’re not

big enough” (Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ).This quote couldn’t be truer. The scari-est things in life are meant to be scarybecause it is what pushes you outside ofyour limits. You are testing yourself tobigger experiences, but that is how onegrows as an individual. I know we maytalk a lot about how amazing Jr. Boardis and that everyone should try and runfor Jr. Board, but we continue to do sobecause it truly is an amazing experi-ence. I hope that people not only see usrepresent those words by speaking, butalso by our actions. To be honest Ithought the Junior Board was going tobe easy and fun, but let me just say I waswrong. There may have been endlessphone calls, or what I feel like is endless, for donations and countless hours spentin the show ring, but I think those timeswhere the most rewarding; they werethe times where you really saw the breedas a whole step forward. All of this hardwork couldn’t be done without thedonations everyone puts forward, andthe Junior. Board couldn’t begin tothank you enough. I would like tothank my grandparents and parents for

the support throughout the JuniorBoard process. They were always mybiggest cheer section, and always helpedout with the cattle when I couldn’t bearound to take care of things myself. Iwould also like to thank Gwen for beingthe motivator to all of us Junior Boardmembers. I know some days would berough and exhausting, but she would beright by our side to keep us going; sheonly wants the best from everyone andshe always somehow magically managesto pull it out of all us. I can’t even beginto be grateful enough for all the newfriendships I have made through JuniorBoard either. These new friendships areones I will never forget and will be ableto hold onto for a lifetime. Thank youeveryone for letting me serve as a repre-sentative for the Junior Board for thepast three years, and I hope that if youwere thinking about running that I’veshed some light on really pushing for-ward with it. What do you have to lose?=
