Should Comics be allowed in our School Library?

INTRO (Point) Recently our school received funds for the purchase of materials for our Library.

(Evidence) There has been some debate over the use of these funds with different groups suggesting

uses. Finally, the suggestion to provide comics in the library was brought up. (Elaboration) Many are in

favour, but there are a few detractors who are vehemently against the idea. (Link) After discussing the

matter with some teachers, students and our Librarian, I offer my opinions on this issue as I am in favour

of having comics in the Library.

However, most of the objections regarding comics arise from the fact that (Point) many depict

unnecessary violence, sex or crimes in the storyline.(Evidence) Definitely, there is a genre of comics that

is quite extreme. (Elaboration) However, it is a simple matter of selection and I am sure our Library

Committee will select only the best materials and avoid any obscene or unsuitable types of comics whenthey purchase the stocks. (Link) There are many other categories of comics that are available in the

market.

(Point) As for those who fear that comics are only for students with a lower ability of reading, it actually

a strong point to promote comics (Evidence) as they make reading less of a chore and more of a delight

and will appeal to those who are less able to appreciate complex texts like novels or biographies.

(Elaboration) This subtle introduction to the joys of reading will encourage weak readers and could

create a love for reading. (Link) Soon, the slow reader may progress to more lengthy articles like

magazines. Thus, comics are the ideal diving board into a vast sea of literature.

Nowadays, students come under a lot of stress from the demands of exams and increasingly higher

standards. When students are tired, they could head to the library and immerse themselves into comics

which are often humourous and could relieve them of their stress. They could relax and enjoy the

delightful graphics of Tin Tin or Asterix and be transported into a simpler world and forget their cares for

a while. Hence, reading comics is a good form of relaxation for the mind.

Furthermore, many comics, the better ones, contain good examples of English which is passed on

painlessly to the reader to emulate. The graphics provide clues as to what action is taking place and as

they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so reading is aided by the cartoons. The script and

action go hand in hand in creating the meaning of the story and this will aid in the understanding of the

language and action. As a result, learning English becomes painless as the words are easily absorbed by

the mind through the aid of pictures.

In addition, some students like to read comics under their desks and some students are too idle and

constantly sit around gossiping and getting into arguments. What better way to get away from these

distracting habits than to instil in our students the habit of reading by creating a comics corner in the

Library where students can select from different comics like Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbs or the higherlevel The Far Side which is renown for its classic sarcasm, irony and creative criticism. SECOND PART

OF P4Some cartoons are political, while some, like Malaysias Lat series are biographical and cultural.

All these different types of comics show how flexible and unique language is and how it can be deployed

to create different sorts of meaning. Therefore, comics can potentially inspire the imagination and give

rise to creative writing as well. This may improve our English essays as humour is always appreciated in

narrative writing.

CONCLUSION

Finally, a student who is reading has a mind that is exploring the verbal universe. When the mind is

completely engaged, it is learning. Comics are a painless way of delivering grammar, sentence structure

and comprehension in a painless dose that is easy to swallow. In conclusion, I hope this article will

persuade our school leaders to create a new comics section in the library with the funds given to us.
