1. Should I save my carpet after a flood? PuroClean Emergency Recovery Services 2. Water damage happens! Floods in your home or business can come from: burst pipes a burst water heater over the ground storm water burst washing machine hose leaking ice maker supply line a leaking roof a toilet overflow or sewage backup 3. When floods happen . . . Many homeowners, business owners and property managers wonder Should I save my carpet and pad? A better question is: Do I really want to save it? 4. The answer to both questions is . . . That depends . . . on several factors! So what are the factors that determine if you should save your carpet and pad? 5. The #1 factor determining if you *should* save your carpet and pad: First, consider the type of flood water that caused the damage! Just ask yourself where did it come from? 6. The #2 factor determining if you *should* save your carpet and pad Next, ask yourself how long was the carpet and pad exposed to the water? 7. The #3 factor determining if you *should* save your carpet and pad: Then ask yourself how was the carpet and pad installed? (Was it glued down, or installed with tackless strip?) 8. The most important factor is: What kind of water damaged the carpet! There are 3 types or categories of water damage. . . Category 1 Category 2 Category 3 9. The 3 types of floodwater: Category 1: CLEAN WATER Clean water is not contaminated. Its water youd be comfortable enough to drink even if you dont want to! It can come from broken pipes, or even a burst hot water heater. This means you can save both the carpet and pad! . . . But only if you extract the water and dry them within the first 24 hours to 48 hours after the water damage has occurred. Tip: *Get the water removed fast! If you leave clean water to dwell it becomes Category 2 or Category 3 water!* 10. Category 2: GRAY WATER This type of water is dirty or used. It comes from washing machines, dishwashers and bath tubs. Depending on how it was installed, the carpet can usually be restored but only if its been wet for less than 48 hours and its not glued down. For Category 2 water damage, usually only the pad needs replacing. Tip: *Dry the carpet, treat it with anti-microbial solution and steam clean it after installing new padding* 11. Category 3 BLACK WATER This is the worst kind of water damage for carpets and pads! Category 3 water comes from sewage back-ups or over-the- ground-flooding during heavy rains It is contaminated with bacteria, viruses and mold Category 1 and 2 water damage becomes Category 3 after 24-48 hours In this case, you have to get rid of both the carpet and pad for the wellbeing of your family or employees. Tip: *Replacing both the carpet and pad is the only safe option!* 12. Our goal is to make you smarter about your options when water damages properties . . .
