Christmas cheers!
Yes, it’s nearly Yuletide again and already it’s time for the bumper Christmas edition of Shouldham News. The year 2012 has been an eventful one for our village, with the in-vasion of the chafer bugs on the playing field, electrical mishaps throughout the village, and Shouldham cele-brating the Diamond Jubilee in right royal style on the Green. There has been bad news, including the King’s Arms closing its doors in June (look inside for plans to save our pub), but good news too: notably the highly successful reintroduction of a Harvest Supper celebration (see inside for reports of the occasion). We’ve had a village shop, bar and restaurant throughout the year, thanks to the Chalk & Cheese, and now also a village website, www.shouldham.info, due to the tireless efforts of a new Shouldham resident, Matt Brown.
A great deal of thanks, too, must go to all the people who – entirely on a voluntary basis – bring you Shouldham News four times a year: our talented designer, Emma Gibson; our dedicated ad manager, John Dovey; Keith Matthews, who keeps the books straight; and our foot-weary team of distributors (Ann Hullah, Chris Lawrence, Helen Brown, John Dovey, Keith Matthews, Julie Walkey, Linda Peake, Mick Bentley, Sarah Ryan, Cas Sawyer, Steve Jones and John McGourty) who de-liver the newsletter to every house in Shouldham and Shouldham Thorpe. Martin Nicholls Martin Nicholls, a friend to many in Shouldham and
the long-time printer of Shouldham News, died on 18th November after a short illness. Even after he
moved away from the village, Martin often returned
to the King’s Arms, especially during rugby matches
when his cheerful banter enlivened many a lacklustre
England performance. Our thoughts are with Perri and
his family.
Village Weekend 2013 Plans are well underway for next year’s communal events, with the dates already set for the Village Bike Ride (Sunday 5th May), the Open Gar-dens and Yard Sale (Sunday 9th June), and the Village Weekend (Friday 5th and Saturday 6th July). On the Friday night of the Village Weekend we’re aiming to have a grand auction – both of household effects and of promises, so if you’ve a secret talent you’re willing to share with your neighbours, start getting prepared! We shall also need volunteers to run stalls at the fete, which next year will be on the playing field. SOKA: Save Our
King’s Arms! Moves are afoot to try and save our vil-lage pub. The King’s Arms has served Shouldham for more than 350 years, and several of us in the village are keen that it will do so again. We don’t see a rejuvenated King’s Arms as being in direct competition to the Chalk & Cheese (and neither does the Chalk & Cheese’s proprie-tor, Andrew Archibald, who is happy to support us). We are hop-ing to have an initial public meeting (probably in the Village Hall) on Friday January 11th, where we plan to investigate the possi-bilities of turning the King’s Arms into a community-owned pub. Please fill in the questionnaire starting on page 6, so we can find out your views. At the public meeting, we also hope to gauge the level of support in the village for this enterprise. Introduction
Following the closure of the King's Arms in June 2012, several of us in
the village decided that 'something must be done'. We are currently in the process of creating a committee to explore options for a community bid to purchase and run the King’s Arms.
If a cooperative was set up, then its objective would be to seek to pur-chase the King’s Arms, and having successfully purchased it, the coop-erative would find a tenant to run the pub.
The cooperative would in time raise the funds to purchase the King’s Arms by issuing shares. One of the important differences between a co-operative and a limited company is that cooperative members all have
an equal vote, whether they have one share or tens of thousands of shares.

the future King’s Arms, the King’s Arms’s future customers, covering an area extending beyond Shouldham.

Carols by Candlelight & Festival of Christmas Trees in All Saints’ Church We intend to repeat the decoration of the church with small Christmas trees (real or artificial) in memory of departed loved ones. These need to be in church before the service of Nine Lessons and Carols, which is to be held on Monday, 17th De-cember at 7pm. The church will be candlelit for
the carol service, and the decorated Christmas trees add significantly to the sense of oc-casion. Mulled wine and refreshments will be served after the service. Everyone welcome. Please contact Ann Hullah (347814/[email protected]) if

Remembrance DayRemembrance DayRemembrance DayRemembrance Day The Service of Remembrance was held at All Saints’ on 11th November at 10.45am, led by Lay Reader, Anne Clarke, with the bells half-muffled for the solemn occasion. We were delighted to have Wing Commander Abbot and Sergeant Merrett from RAF Marham with us to lay wreaths at the war memorial during the Act of Remembrance. In this, they were accompanied by World War II veteran, Ron Revell (aided by Wendy Ash), and Louisa Woodbine who laid wreaths on behalf of the Royal Brit-ish Legion. The names of the Fallen were read by Churchwarden Brian Hullah when the two minutes’ silence was duly observed. In her short sermon, Anne emphasised the importance of recalling the sacrifice that our servicemen and women have made – and continue to make – in wars across the globe. But she also stressed the struggle Christians face in striving for world peace, using as a final text Jesus’ parting words: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. The moving service had been specially revised by Rev Barbara Burton, to whom we send good wishes for a speedy recovery from illness.

Harvest Supper reaps abundant praise The revival of this traditional event was the idea of Jennifer Malby and was held in Shouldham Village Hall on the evening of Saturday, 20th Oc-tober. Although we were saddened to be without Rev Barbara Burton through illness, a sizeable group of 55 parishioners sat down to an excel-lent first course of roast pork and all the trimmings, supplied by Van Pelt Pork Butchers’, with cooking by Steve and Mandy Massen. This was fol-lowed by a splendid choice of desserts provided by various ladies of the village. It was agreed that this was an occasion to be repeated in future years, and a huge thank-you is due to Jenny and her tireless team of helpers who made it a most enjoyable evening. Along with the raffle, a worthy £190 was made for church funds, for which the PCC is most grateful. Brian and Ann Hullah

Following the success of the Shouldham Village Week-end, Jenny Malby immediately decided to organise a Harvest Supper to help raise much-needed funds for All Saints’ Church. Plans were put into action by a number
of people and, on the day, the Village Hall was set up to look especially festive. The tables were set with the new cutlery and plates recently bought with funds raised during the Village Weekend. (Incidentally, this new cutlery and crockery is available for hire.) The guests not only en-joyed food expertly and deliciously cooked by Steve and Mandy Massen, but also enjoyed the exhibition of old photos of the village – photos from a collection Jenny has put together over the years and added to by other villagers for this Harvest Supper event.
Some of the comments overheard at the evening include:

‘Now where in Shouldham is that?’, and
‘My goodness, how different that scene looks now!’
Jenny’s idea to revive the tradition of having a Harvest Supper in Should-ham was successful in many ways: in the funds that were raised, and in the enjoyable evening that resulted, the friendly chat, the delicious meal and the fond reminiscences. Jenny and her team most definitely de-served the grateful applause given them at the end of such a happy event.
Changes to the bin-collection service
From April 2nd 2013, the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West
Norfolk is introducing a new bin-collection service. You should have
received a leaflet explaining the changes, but if not, read on.
The main changes are the introduction of a weekly collection of
food waste and the collection of the black bins and the green bins
on alternate weeks. These changes will help the council to in-
crease recycling from 37% to nearer 50%. The new service also re-
duces contract costs to the council, and therefore the council tax
payer by around £1m per year.
To facilitate these changes, new bins are being delivered between
the end of January and the end of March. Most households will re-
ceive:
• A new grey 23-litre food-waste bin.
• A new grey 7-litre kitchen caddy (plus an initial supply of 50 com-
postable liners).
• A new black 240-litre bin to replace the current black 140-litre bin
(the 140-litre bin will be collected and recycled when your new bin
is delivered).
Those households with black-bag collections or communal bins will
also receive kitchen caddies for food waste.
Residents wishing to keep their existing 140-litre bin for the new al-
ternate weekly collection, rather than receiving a new 240-litre bin,
can do so. Simply complete the online form by visiting the website
www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/refuseandrecycling or by calling 01553
616200. All requests to keep the 140-litre bin must be
received before Christmas.
Information about how to use the new service will be
delivered early next year. Calendars detailing collec-
tion dates will be delivered to households before the
new service starts.

Showing films in Shouldham?
I have been looking into the feasibility of showing films in Shouldham and would like to pass information on to people and also try to get a sense of the level of interest for this.
There is an organisation called Village Screen; it helps villages in the eastern region to put on films. The titles are those you can see in the mainstream cinema, but some time after their release. The films shown in Downham Market each month are part of this scheme. If you would like to find out more, log on to www.villagescreen.co.uk/
At this point I need to find three or four other people who would be interested in working with me to try and make this happen. So email me ([email protected]) if you might like to get involved. I would also like to get a sense of the level of interest in coming along to watch films locally. My enquiries so far indicate that Shouldham’s Village Hall is not high enough to fit the screen that would be used. So this means looking elsewhere.

Annual Report 2012 – Shouldham WI
Shouldham WI was formed in March 2012 and currently
has a membership of 14 and has had 19 visitors who have
attended up to three times. There are approximately 20
more people on the email circle who wish to be kept in-
formed of WI events and activities. There is a committee of five who meet
once a month to discuss planned events and organisation. Members come
from Shouldham and surrounding towns and villages with a wide age range.
The WI meets every fourth Thursday in Shouldham Village Hall.
Meetings this year have consisted of a Norfolk cheese and wine evening,
jewellery making, garden design, teacup posies and tea party, card making,
Shabby Chic furniture painting, a visit to Caithness Crystal and a sugar-
craft evening, and will culminate in a tree decoration making session to
decorate a Christmas tree in Shouldham Church.
The WI had a stand at the village Diamond Jubilee celebration and col-
lected many names for the email round, and held a baking competition at
the Village Weekend. The WI also had a stall at St Martin at Shouldham
School Christmas market and raised £65.75 from a tombola, children’s
games and the sale of books.
The programme for next year has been planned and is available to inter-
ested parties. We have had three members join for 2012/2013 through
the early booking system. Meetings will continue to be fairly informal and
will include a rota for hostess, a raffle or sale for funds and information
from Federation. The WI will purchase a copy of the WI Gazette for each member.
We are in contact with Watlington, Barroway Drove and Pentney & District
WIs and have been invited to attend various meetings and trips. Joining
with other groups will allow us to participate in activities that we would not
otherwise be able to enjoy with a small membership. Federation also in-
vites members to trips and activities as well as competitions.

Autumn quiz
The evening of Saturday, 10th November saw nine ta-
bles of contestants at the Village Hall submitting
themselves to the mental torture that your two
churchwardens had prepared, with the sardonic
opening words: ‘It’s the easiest quiz yet…!’ After all the usual ban-
ter, groans and good humour, the Websters’ table from Barton
Bendish emerged as clear victors after a closely fought contest.
Many thanks to all the contestants; to our tireless
scorer, Anne Carpenter; to the kind donors of raf-
fle prizes; and to those who manned the door.
The final profit for church funds was another £190,
which the PCC again acknowledges with grati-
tude.

Support your Bowls Club! In addition to the events listed in ‘Dates for your diaries’, the Bowls
Club has whist drives every Tuesday at 7.30pm and line dancing every
Friday at 7.30pm. New members for 2013 are most welcome, espe-
cially bowlers (anyone from aged 12 can come and have a go). Fees:
bowlers £20 (£15 concessions) per year, non-playing members £10 per family per year. Membership subscriptions are due in January.
Support for the club has gone down over the years. You have lost the
pub, why lose another venue in the village? It’s not just a bowls club,
it is also a social club. We have had to reduce the music
nights by more than half through lack of support.
The meals laid on at our music nights are very good
value, and you get live entertainment as well. Just to
book one artist for the evening now costs just under
£200.
