IT’S OUR FUTURE!Our company started off way back in 1927. Now, over 85 years later, Fagan & Whalley is not only the largest privately owned haulage company in our region, but also a business that operates nationally and internationally for customers large and small across a whole range of industries.

First and foremost, by sheer determination. And by treating customers, and the standards by which we serve them, as the very core of our business. By being consistent and reliable in everything that we do. By being practical, realistic and approachable. And by building the best teams that we possibly can in all our departments – F&W’s success depends equally on us all.

In 2013, we have continued to grow with our systems and facilities enhanced, so that we can offer the best possible service to our customers and the best possible conditions for our people. That said, we are still are operating in a very competitive and challenging environment; hard times will be with us for some time yet.

But the future is what counts. It always has and always will. We plan for it and we build for it, every day of the week.

As this, the first edition of ‘Shout’, our new newsletter, so readily shows!

How have we come through to this position?

Best of Burnley - our town, our business

Then and Now: F&W has been a major part of Burnley industry

for over 50 years, and is now the leading road transport business in

our area.

ToughTouch - the latest generation PDA is here

F&W is proud of its roots in Burnley and its local communities. Through good times, hard times and times of great change, the bond between us has only got stronger.

With performance, efficiency and customer satisfaction at the forefront of our operation, we are proud to introduce ‘ToughTouch’ - the new Fagan & Whalley in-cab communication system.

This latest PDA system will revolutionise communications from the traffic office to our vehicles. At its heart is the ability to send order details and instructions through to our drivers electronically, greatly improving our operating efficiency. ToughTouch is also being introduced in response to demands from customers who require real-time proof of delivery, arrival and departure times of consignments, bar-code scanning and electronic signature capture.

‘ToughTouch’ represents our ongoing commitment in providing leading edge equipment for our employees, who in turn can deliver the best service possible to our customers. The roll - out is already underway, with our rigid fleet already benefiting from this technology, with the artics following on.Training on how to make the most of ToughTouch will begin in the New Year, but any initial feedback you can provide at this early stage is much appreciated.

Today, Burnley is on the up again.

The government no less has awarded Burnley the title of The Most Enterprising Town in Britain! Along with ourselves, there are many leading edge businesses being located around the town, in industries as diverse as music and aerospace. Working closely with the Council, F&W and many other top companies in the area have formed a ‘Bondholder’ scheme to promote not just Burnley’s current businesses but also the enormous potential of our local area. Pulling together, we can really achieve something special.

Which is why one of our latest trailers now carries a special, highly distinctive, ‘Invest in Burnley’ colour scheme. As part of our general fleet, the trailer will be running anywhere and everywhere across the UK, ringing the bell for Burnley!

F&W COVENTRY: RIGHT AT THE HEART OF THINGS!

The first depot we have ever had away from our Lancashire home, F&W Coventry is situated just 2 miles from the J3 of the M6. As such, Coventry now gives us an operating centre right at the heart of the UK, bringing us a huge potential for new business. And by being located right at the centre of the UK motorway network, Coventry will also make a great contribution to the overall versatility and flexibility of running our fleet.

Coventry marks one of the most significant developments in our history. Because now, F&W has evolved from a regional to a truly national haulier.

n Depot Fuel Fuelling up at company sites is an instant cost saver. As well as our facilities at Padiham and Coventry, fuel is available in exactly the same way at our customer TRM’s site in Burscough, so we encourage everyone to use them all. Never risk running on empty as the cost of recovery is a lot higher than getting fuel at a forecourt!

TIPS FROM THE TRAFFIC DESK

Fleet update

Putting the wheels in motion

Scanias P063 PVD, PO63 PJY (in Knauf blue), PO63 PHZ - with two more to follow in November

Fuel efficient driving is mentioned everywhere these days and no wonder! Even the smallest saving in fuel makes an enormous difference to a fleet like ours. So here are a few tips to not only help reduce our fuel usage but also your own vehicles too!

Our fleet is the backbone of our business, and to most people their image of our company is based on the image of our trucks. As a result, we continually invest in providing the best vehicles we possibly can.

n 140 Scania Tractors now standardised around the 440hp 6x2 model

n 22 Scania / DAF / Iveco Rigids from 7.5 to 18 tonnes gvw

n 350 Trailers With varying heights and cubic capacities

n Plan Ahead Excessive gear changing, high revs and braking all use or waste fuel. By anticipating the road ahead, smooth driving and using the most efficient gear possible not only boosts fuel economy but also reduces noise level and engine strain.

n Idling One of the fastest ways to reduce fuel usage is by not letting the engine idle. When it’s safe to do so, always turn off the engine. Modern engines use no extra fuel starting, so there are real savings to be made.

n Cruise Control Cruise control helps to optimise the electronic control system’s ability to deliver the appropriate amount

of fuel for any given situation, thus improving fuel efficiency. If you have it, use it, but remember cruise control doesn’t have eyes!

We are family

........and that’s not all! David Weston, who drives one of our Palletforce 18 tonners, has just clocked up 25 years with us. Having worked many years as a distance driver all over the UK, David then moved onto our Palletforce team serving customers throughout the BB and BL postcodes. Upon such comprehensive and dedicated service our reputation rests!

A goal for Padiham FC!

Eric Hill - Mountaineer

Three Cheers!

We are delighted to announce that F&W is now the main sponsor for our local football team, Padiham FC. Now playing the First Division of the EvoStik Northern Premier League, this is already a historic season for the club.

Secretary Alan Smith says “Lots of Padiham people work for Fagan & Whalley, and we see their vehicles all over the country, so it’s great that such a leading local business has agreed to support us – so it’s definitely a big thank you from us to Graham Fagan and all at F&W.”

Whenever there’s a retirement from the F&W family, we always ask ourselves ‘how will we ever do without them’? Recently, three of our stalwart drivers have left the company, and we thank them for their magnificent contribution over a combined 38 years of service. So three cheers to Thomas Johnson, Jack Everitt and Neil Tattersall!.

Even the sun came out for Thomas and Jack, pictured here between Graham and Stephen Fagan, when they were presented with their own Scania 44 tonner to take home with them. There’s no real getting away - is there?

Hats off to our distance driver Eric Hill, who during the summer spent part of his break reaching Gilman’s Point, 5,681m up the side of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!Raising over £4,000 for Marie Curie in the process, Eric’s trek up the mountainside took over four days, principally due to the substantially thinner levels of oxygen found in the high African air than here in East Lancashire. So - congratulations Eric, and to everyone who supported you. And as part of the ethos of SHOUT, we’ll be pleased to give advance publicity to anyone else in the company raising money for good causes.

The next big thing!FF&W is now taking another step into the future, significantly adding to its skill set and long term business potential.

A contributing factor to the success of our business is our ability to quickly react to changing customer requirements and demand.

Built upon this, FF&W is the joint business activity between Farralls of Chester and Fagan & Whalley.

Established now for 3 years, FF&W pools the resources and expertise of ourselves and Farralls, to deliver an ideal bespoke distribution solution. Potentially, this gives us the ability to expand our customer base and enter

new markets, particularly end to end logistics management.

Already working for Knauf Insulation out of St. Helens and Cwmbran, the continued success of this unique solution lies in our versatile and dedicated team.
