THE POWER OF A CHILD
In this, our Centennial Season, TCT celebrates The Power of a Child. Each of our
MainStage productions this season feature a unique child, who profoundly and positively
impacts the lives of others. TCT hopes to IMPACT, IGNITE, and INSPIRE children of all
ages to claim their own unique power to change their worlds for the better.
ABOUT THE SHOW Behind every great Man-in-Red is a great Woman-in-Red! She’s making a list and checking
it twice!
When the holiday is threatened by a severe outbreak of North Pole Pox two days before
Christmas, and even Santa himself is forced to be quarantined, it’s Mrs. Claus to the
rescue! She has less than 24 hours to figure out how to pull off the best Christmas ever.
Good thing she has a team of elves and Christmas creatures to help her work out all the
details.
Featuring traditional carols and a world-premiere script (commissioned by The Children’s
Theatre of Cincinnati), this holiday musical is about leadership, goodwill, and teamwork.

THE NORTH POLE A large part of the story takes place in Santa’s Workshop, a secret location near the
North Pole. The North Pole is the northernmost point on earth. It defines the direction of
true north. At the North Pole, all directions point south. The North Pole is the center of
the Northern Hemisphere. The nearest known land mass is usually said to be Kaffekluben
Island, off the northern coast of Greenland, about 430 miles away. While the South Pole
lies on a continental land mass, the North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic
Ocean, in waters almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice.
Attempts to reach the North Pole began in the late 19th century. The first undisputed
expedition to reach the North Pole was that of the airship Norge, which overflew the area
in 1926, with 16 men aboard, including expedition leader Roald Amundsen.
CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD In the story, Mrs. Claus must go on Santa’s trip around the world herself, to ensure that
Christmas isn’t ruined. Christmas traditions vary from country to country. Christmas
celebrations in many nations include lighting Christmas trees, the hanging of Advent
wreaths, Christmas stockings, candy canes, and setting out cookies and milk for Santa
Claus.
In Ethiopia, Christmas is called Genna, and is celebrated on January 7. Christians fast for
40 days (called the Fast of the Prophets) then head to church at dawn on Christmas
morning.
In South Korea, Christmas is a public holiday, but because Christmas is totally banned in
North Korea, South Koreans living near the border are not allowed to put up an outdoor
Christmas tree or decorations.
In India, many Christian houses decorate Christmas cribs, and distribute sweets and cakes
to their neighbors.
In Canada, Christmas traditions are similar to those of the United States, with some
lingering influences from the United Kingdom, such as Mince Pies, Plum Pudding, and
Christmas Cake, desserts traditionally served with Christmas dinner.

Grade Level Activities Grades K-2
In MRS. CLAUS SAVES THE DAY, there are many elves who work for Santa. Although the elves often
move as a group, they are all unique individuals. Each one is different!
People are unique, too. If YOU were to become one of Santa’s Elves, what would be your goofy name? What
quirky things would you do? How would you walk around? What tools/technology do you use to make toys? In
the box below, DRAW A PICTURE of yourself as one of Santa’s Elves. Use as many colors as you like, and
show what kinds of toys you would make. Have fun!

Grades 3-6
(Subjects: Math Skills (Ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplication, ratios, division)
Santa and the Elves are responsible for making and delivering toys to every child on earth!
As you can imagine, even the elves have a hard time keeping track of all those toys. That’s
why we need your help! Read and solve the word problems below, using your basic math
skills to find the solutions. Be sure to check your work.
1. There were 600 boxes of toy trains that were sent to New York City. Half as many
boxes were sent to Toronto, Canada. How many boxes TOTAL were sent to the two
cities? BONUS: If each box contains 100 toy trains, how many trains TOTAL were
sent to the two cities?
2. Santa’s Head Elf needs to know how many candy canes can be made from one gallon
of sugar. An elf tells Henchy that 1 cup of sugar makes 2 candy canes. If there are
16 cups in 1 gallon, how many candy canes can be made from 1 gallon of sugar?
BONUS: How many gallons of sugar would you need to make 200 candy canes?
3. There are 1,444 elves working at Santa’s Workshop. If each elf works 38 hours per
week, how many total work hours do they put in every week? BONUS: How many
hours do they put in every three weeks?

STANDARDS
Math Standards
3.OA.5 Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. For example, if 6 × 4 = 24 is
known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known (Commutative Property of Multiplication); 3 × 5 × 2 can be found
by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30 (Associative Property of Multiplication);
knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56
(Distributive Property). Students need not use formal terms for these properties. 3.OA.6 Understand
division as an unknown.
3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using
equations with a letter or a symbol, which stands for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness
of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. This standard is
limited to problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers. Students may use
parentheses for clarification since algebraic order of operations is not expected.
Reading Standard
RL.1.1 : Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

THEME: COMMUNITIES: PAST AND PRESENT, NEAR AND FAR The local community serves as the focal
point for third grade as students begin to understand how their communities have changed over time
and to make comparisons with communities in other places. The study of local history comes alive
through the use of artifacts and documents. They also learn how communities are governed and how
the local economy is organized.
