Show-me boards are one of the most cost-effectiveteaching aids available. No other teaching aid is as versatile Show-meboards can be used acrossall curriculum subjects, all age ranges and in allsituations. SUPERTOUGH,and other rigid boards, caneven be used on the carpet,outside, and on field trips.


The teacher writes the question on thewhiteboard or discusses with the class, thentells the students to write their answers ontheir Show-me boards. The teacher then saysWhen I say SHOW-ME, I want all of you to putyour boards in the air.

SHOW-ME!. All boards go up. The teachercan now see every answer. From that theteacher can analyse the speed of eachchilds response and can easily pick-outincorrect answers.

boards. Hopefully thiswill stimulate you tocreate your ownactivities in theclassroom...


MindmappingPlain boards are an excellenttool for getting ideas downbefore story writing or anycreative thinking activity.Instant erasability = morefreedom to map all ideas andis therefore far more effectivethan paper.

TeamworkShow-me boards are greattools for stimulatingteamwork. Put pupils in pairsor small groups and timethem to complete a problem.The first pair or group to holdup their Show-me board withthe correct answer wins. Idealfor all curriculum areas.

Working in groupsWhen working in groups,always encourage the firstgroup that finishes aproblem to hold up theirShow-me board with theanswer. This technique ismuch less disruptive thancalling out the answer. In group projects, appoint ascribe who can write downthe groups solutions.

BuildingconfidenceSome of the less confidentstudents can use Show-me

boards on their own. They can write an answer ontheir Show-me board andbriefly hold it up to theteacher. With just a nod or ashake of the teachers head,they know if its right orwrong without drawing toomuch attention to the rest of the class.

Silent Line Up This works best if you have alarge open space e.g. a gymhall. Ask the children to writea number on their boardwithin a given range, e.g. a number between 350 and450. Say go and they all haveto move into order fromsmallest to largest but theyhave to do this in absolutesilence. They cancommunicate with each other through gestures butno talking or noises!

You are outAsk the children to write anumber on their whiteboardin a given range and to put iton the floor in a space. Thechildren then walk around theroom and when you call stopthey have to stand beside aboard. Call out a property andif children are standing besidea board which matches it, theyare out and sit to the side. Forexample, if you are out if youare a multiple of 5. Keepplaying until there is only oneperson left. You can then ask achild to take over in your roleso you can monitor the game.

Guess mynumber Write or display a selection of numbers within anappropriate range or aselection of shapes, clocks or whatever else fits yourlearning outcome. Secretly choose one then giveclues to which one you havechosen. Children write theirguess on their board thenshow them altogether to see if they were correct.

Describe & drawAsk children to sit back-to-back with their learningpartners. One child draws apicture on their whiteboard.They then try and explain/describe the picture to theirpartner who draws theirversion on their ownwhiteboard. To finish, bothchildren hold up theirwhiteboards side by side and compare how similar(or different) they are.



Virtually every lesson andevery class, we will use theboards. The simple fact that they are so correctable they have their eraser right next to them gives them confidence; theyll try all sorts of thingsthat they wouldnt do on paper!

Gimme 5 You give the children adescription or criteria ofsomething related to thetopic. They have to write 5examples on their board. You can encourage thechildren to be more daringwith their responses bypraising or even awardingpoints for examples whichno-one or few others havegiven. This can make themthink about less obviousanswers.

DiagrambuildingStudents often havedifficulty in constructingdiagrams that represent asituation described in word problems,particularly for Mathsproblems. Show-me

boards are an effectivemedium for students topractice this skill withoutwasting large amounts of paper.

Learningobjectives Show-me boards are idealwhen planning LearningObjectives or for any form of lesson planning. It eliminates the need to uselarge amounts of paper as thestudent can do their roughworkings before properlystarting the lesson in theirworkbook.

BoardrelayShow-me Board Relay is ahighly motivating game whereeach member of a team has todo one step of a problem andthen pass it to the next personin the team to complete thenext step. This can beenhanced by giving studentsdifferent coloured pens toensure that each student inthe relay team contributesappropriately. The childrenwill really love this one!

You cant replace thesewith technology. Its justnot the same. We use both,but theres so much moreengagement and its somuch more tactile withShow-me boards. You can also use themanywhere withoutworrying about thembreaking!


GuidelinesHave a clear set of guidelines when using Show-me boards. This helps regulate thechildren and in some waysmakes it seem even morefun, e.g. only raise yourboards when the signal isgiven; only lower the boardswhen the question has beendiscussed enough; only takethe cap off the pen when thequestion is read out etc.

VocabularyChains A vocabulary chain is whenthe last letter of a word isused as the first letter of thenext word. You can ask themto use maths vocabulary orwords around a particulartopic. This can work well as awhole class as you give thefirst word, they write asuggestion on theirwhiteboard.

Describe itShow children a picture andask them to write adjectiveswhich describe elements ofthe picture. This could bemade more challenging byasking for full sentences,descriptive phrases,metaphors, etc.

BargraphsThe teacher asks eachchild to think of a numberbetween 1 & 10. Theteacher then records onthe main whiteboard thenumber of children whohave chosen 1s, 2s, 3s, 4sand so on. Children thenhave to create a bar chartusing the data working leftto right on the board.

Today we laughedtogether in French classas I had the studentsdraw each item on theirwhiteboards while Idictated recently learnedclothing vocabulary. The shared experiencewas wonderful.

ForeignobjectsShow a series of pictures(e.g. a car, a bus, a train, ahotel, a train-station, a taxi)and the children write thenoun for each in the foreignlanguage.

Taking careof yourboardsand pensKeep a Show-me board,pen and eraser in a gripsealbag or similar and makesure the students always putthem back in the gripsealbag at the end of eachlesson. This will save timeand make sure the sets stay together.

CollageCreation Take 2 6 Show-me boardsand arrange them together ina block. Draw the outline of apicture/shape/object (e.g. aflower) covering all of theboards. Each child then takesaway a single board and usesShow-me coloured drywipepens to colour in their sectionof the overall picture. Onceeveryone finishes, re-arrangethe boards to view thecompleted masterpiece.

Picture the storyAfter reading a story or play,ask the children to draw apicture of what happened ora scene from the book ontheir Show-me board. This reinforces in their mindwhat they have read and it isso much more fun than endof the story questions! Show-me Tell-a-storyboards are also great for this along with the option towrite a brief caption or storyalongside the pictures see page 36.

Spelling quizUse Show-me boards for aspelling quiz. Call out a word for the students towrite on to their Show-me

board. When they havewritten it, they hold it up.Alternatively, give them a listof ten spellings to be held upwhen completed. It then becomes easy for youto spot the pupils who requireextra assistance.

NumbergamesA useful game you can play tohelp teach students averagesetc. Use your electronicwhiteboard software to roll adice while the students keepa tally on their Show-me

boards. After about 25 or 30rolls of the dice, they have aset of figures which they canthen extract information from e.g. most common number,average number, number oftimes odd or even numberswere rolled. The list isendless!

LanguagelessonsShow-me boards are great inlanguage lessons, e.g. theteacher reads out a sentencein French: The ball is underthe table. The students thenhave to draw what they think itmeans and hold up theirboard. The teacher can spotinstantly who has understoodand who hasnt.
