The Spring Fling Horse Show and Spring Sale will be held April 25 – 27. Kristen Cater from Dunbarton, NH will be judging the 3-day show, managed by Scarlett Mattson. Academy classes have also been added to the schedule, with the WTC division exhibit-ing Friday late afternoon preceding the regular show, and the WT division scheduled for Saturday afternoon. “We hope that the Academy riders will enjoy being a part of our evening’s activi-ties and that those families will stay and enjoy the regular horse show,” said Jackie Hale, show chairman. Live entertainment at the Friday night exhibitor party will feature an up-and-coming Nashville talent, with a full bar and restaurant in The Miller Club all weekend.

New this year for Southern Saddlebred’s Spring and Fall Sales is the publication of the sale catalog as an E-Book. In addition to each entry being featured on the website, a sale catalog will once again be printed and mailed upon request. Spring sale entries don’t close until March 19th.

Show manager Kent Moeller has announced the judges for the 2013 Lexington Junior League Horse Show. Judging all per-formance classes will be Chuck Herbert, James Nichols, and Gene van der Walt. Barbe Smith will join Herbert and Nichols for the Equitation competition.

Additionally, the management team of the Red Mile racetrack has rescinded its ban of tanbark footing, allowing the Junior League to go back to the successful tanbark footing that was absent from last year’s horse show.

An additional row of bistro tables will be added at the in-gate end of the ring, adding another tier to that terrace and eliminat-ing the Jumbotron.

The Lexington Junior League Horse Show will be held July 8-13 on the Red Mile in Lexington, KY. Two divisions have been added to the schedule for 2013: Ladies Amateur Three-Gaited and Ladies Amateur Five-Gaited.

The judges for the Kentucky State Fair World’s Champion-ship Horse Show have been selected, they are: Steve Crab-tree, Fran Crumpler, Kim Crumpler, George Knight, and Kent Swalla. They will be judging all divisions, Mr. and Mrs. Crumpler will not both judge the same class.

There have been changes made in the schedule of classes. There will be a qualifying class and a championship class for Junior Park Horses. The qualifying requirements for Pleasure, Park, and Park Pleasure, six (6) classes in three (3) shows, will apply to this class.

Due to the diminished entries in the five gaited and three gait-ed pony qualifying classes the classes have been consolidated into one qualifying class for each of the championships. The younger age division in Equitation has also been changed to two (2) qualifying classes, 13 year olds and 12 and under. This was done because of the lack of entries in the 11 and under classes.

Traditions Continue in Wooton, Kentucky…

By Sheila GuayOff the beaten path, in a small town named Wooton, Kentucky, you will find Doug Wooton Stables. Located in the heart of coal mining country, just a few minutes outside of Hazard Kentucky, stands a Sadddlebred training farm that has been around for many years. The original barn containing 4 stalls was built in 1984 directly behind his parents’ house. Doug gained his first horse knowledge from his father Willie Wooton who was a blacksmith that logged with draft horses and mules. Willie also taught Doug to ride. Willie had a pony waiting at the house after Doug was born and came home from the hospital. Growing up, Doug would travel with his father and learn the trade of shoeing himself. While Willie was shoeing, Doug would ride horses for the customers as well. He says that he enjoyed this and was willing to ride any horse he could. In his early teen years he had several saddle horses that he would train with his father and show at the local county shows. He didn’t care what divi-sion he was in, he just loved being able to show his horses. The first show horse he had was a Tennessee Walking Horse and American Saddlebred cross named Lady. She was a big chestnut gaited mare that he showed for five years. At the age of 15 Doug’s parents bought him his first registered Saddlebred, Hottest Gossip. She competed in the Saddlebred racking classes in Vir-ginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Within the next few years Doug started training horses for people in the local area to bring to county horse shows. At the age of 17 Doug was able to break, train, and shoe horses for all dif-ferent divisions in the Saddlebred show ring. At the age of 18 Doug won the Open Walk Trot class at the Moorehead Kentucky College with a mare named Gold Kiss, who was by Sultans Santana out of York Town Magic. “I didn’t have much formal instruction as a kid but I still was able to learn a lot. Just being in the barn, and around the horses day in and day out teaches you more than you can imagine. I rode as many horses as I possibly could and learned a lot about bridling a horse that way. I learned through trial and error what worked and what didn’t. Shoeing and riding my own horses was a learning process, too. I’d shoe a horse one way and see how the horse went. Now I can usually get it done on the first try! It’s all a learning ex-perience, and if you ever think you know everything about training a horse, you’re wrong, there is always plenty more to learn.” Over the next twenty years Doug worked various training jobs. His first job was in Sunberry, Ohio working for George Henn Jr. From there he went to work for Terry Honaker in Bluefield West Virginia, and then to Leon & Deborah Richardson’s in Knoxville Tennessee. In 2011 he decided to come back to Wooton, KY and continue where he had first started.

Doug Wooton Stables has gone from 4 to 23 stalls offering a full service training facility with the trainer living on the premises. Doug prides himself on offering the best quality he can for his customers by doing everything here at the farm personally. This includes breaking, training, tails, and shoe-ing. Having the knowledge to do each aspect of preparing a show horse is something Doug Wooton Stables prides itself on. Doug specializes in breaking young horses for show and sale. Doug enjoys breaking young horses to ride as two year olds. Watching the horses learn what they are taught and the prog-ress that they make so quickly always provides a sense of achievement. “You have to be able to get a horse to trust you, in order to get them to work for you. I work quietly around the young horses so they can trust me and achieve a sense of confidence in themselves,” Doug says of his training tech-niques. His biggest pet peeve is a horse that won’t stand still while being mounted. All of the horses he breaks learn from the start that they will stand while being mounted! If you are ever in the area of Wooton, Kentucky, Doug invites you to stop by the farm and see the tradition that he is continu-ing. Doug Wooton Stables is always accepting new horses into their training program.

NewsMID-AMERICA SPRING MOVESTO THURSDAY-SATURDAY ON EASTER WEEKEND

This year’s Mid-America Spring Show falls on Easter week-end, and will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but not on Easter Sunday. Actual show dates are March 28-30. Allison Deardorff of Molalla, Oregon, will judge all classes.

Mid-America Spring is a great way to start the show season as it’s all indoors, under one roof, at the Ledges facility on the Illi-nois/Wisconsin state line in Roscoe, IL. Ledges is a fully heated 72,000 square foot indoor facility, with 275 oak sided permanent stalls -- making it comfortable in any weather.

Mid-America Spring offers complete divisions for Saddlebred five- and three-gaited, fine harness, and Park performance horses as well as pleasure classes for Show, Country, Western, Hunt Seat and even Open Pleasure classes. There also are Hackney Show Pleasure Driving, Road Pony classes and saddle seat equitation age groups plus Good Hands, USEF Medal, UPHA Challenge Cup and Pleasure Medallion qualifiers. All 14 Academy classes are on Good Friday afternoon.

Three TBA classes are in the schedule to accommodate class equests. If exhibitors want a class added, they can sponsor a TBA class for $100 and a guarantee of at least three entries. Press Release from Hardwick, NJ

February 25, 2013

North Wind Stables and trainer Nealia McCracken are pleased to announce the addition of Greg Scott to the training staff of her well known Hardwick, NJ farm. WGC Outta Line and Kelly

Chris congratulated Kelly and Outta Line after their

World Championship ride at the 2008 TWHNC.

In North Central Alabama near Decatur and Moulton, Alabama, there is a new Breeding and Training facility that is as much of a “fairy tale” barn as some of those horses that inhabit it are…. This place is Choose Your Gait Farms. The farm and facility is owned by Kelly Carter Peevy a Huntsville, Alabama business woman, who is a Vice-President of a defense contracting firm. The farm consists of a state of the art breeding operation for her numerous World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse Stallions and World Renowned Friesian Stallions originally imported from Holland, along with World Champion Racking Horses and other top stallions they stand for the public. Choose Your Gait Farms is focused on providing a unique opportunity for you to breed your mares to some of the most “beautiful and talented horses” in the world. They currently are standing Exceptional Stallions of different colors and breeds. Each Stallion is fully registered in their respective Breed Registry(s). The Stallion selection consideration at the current time includes World Champion and World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horses, Generator’s Santana, Outta Line, JFK’s Delight (aka Bingo), Grayline, The New York Yankee, 2012 World Grand Champion Racking Horse, Papa’s Final Choice, and WC Racking Horse, The Santini. Berend (Baron) the Friesian, a purebred Friesian imported from the Netherlands, is a STER Stallion, and a World Champion in Saddleseat, who can be crossbred with a mare of a different breed. Cornelius is also a STER Friesian Stallion, and Reserve World Champion. Doekle, the newest and

youngest of the Friesian Stallions is also a STER Stallion, which Kelly imported in the spring of 2012 to Alabama from Holland. But perhaps the most famous of the Friesian Stallions, is the KFPS Approved Friesian Stallion, Anne 340 Sport, who was bought by Kelly in December 2012. Anne’s (pronounced ON-nah) arrival in Alabama is the first time in the history of the Friesian breed in the United States that a KFPS Approved stallion has stood at stud in Alabama, not to mention, Anne is the only KFPS Approved stallion located in the Southern United States. There are very few KFPS approved Friesian Stallions alive in the world today, less than 90, with less than 25 of those located in the USA. Anne is truly a one of a kind for the Southern States. These titled stallions can be used for crossbreeding (with the exception of Anne) and will add their unique talents to each mare that is bred to one of them, to produce a foal with beauty, talent, conformation and personality. All Stallions at Choose Your Gait Breeding are offered live cover or fresh cooled shipped semen. All stallions also come with a Live Foal Guarantee. In addition to offering superior Stallions; they specialize in the training and starting of young horses of all breeds. Farm owner, Kelly, spent most of her childhood in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but having also lived in Jackson, Mississippi where she remembered her first horse shows riding her own pony to the show and competing when she was 6 years old. Kelly has two Children a son, Carter who is a Sophomore at Auburn University studying Chemical Engineering and Kaite age 15, who is a sophomore in High School. Normally, you can find Kaite nearby

as she loves going to the horse shows and cheering her mother on. Kaite is planning to make her debut on the horse show circuit this year for the first time ever aboard a show horse. Kelly’s interest in horses, especially Tennessee Walking Horses came from her parents, who have always allowed and encouraged her love of horses. Both her parents, Linda and Jerry Carter, have shown over the years, but now her mom is helping Kelly with the business end of the farm, while her Dad is determined to re-enter the show ring again in 2013 after a lengthy recovery from major back surgery and heart surgery. Kelly’s interest in Friesians came almost 3 years ago when she decided to venture into other breeds as a result of some of the frustrations within the Walking horse world. As a child, and even as an adult, Kelly has always drawn portraits of houses, people, and of course, horses. It was the horse that she routinely drew, one with long tails that flowed in the wind, and a mane that would drag on the ground, that made Kelly realize she wanted to have that childhood horse she drew so many times. Berend (Baron) was the horse of her young girl dreams, and Kelly has been captivated by the massive, majestic, gentle giants ever since. After taking a vacation to Holland early in 2012, to study the magnificent black horse, she bought Doekle on her trip in Holland. Kelly’s vacations generally center around horse shows and she lists the Friesian IFSHA National and World Championship show in Lexington, Virginia as one of her favorite None Walking shows. Kelly can be found every Saturday night at a horse show. Her favorite win comes from the 2008 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration when she won three blue ribbons aboard Outta Line. One of these titles was the first ever World Grand Championship spotlight ride for Kelly. Outta Line (aka “Otis”) is a grey stallion, and is one of the featured stallions at the farm. Kelly still shows Otis, and as a team, they remain undefeated since winning their title in 2008. Kelly says that she believes that the Walking Horse Industry is in a bad situation caused and brought on by certain organizations and participants that have intentionally harmed the industry, and she is fearful that their harm may be irreparable; but she also said that she is doing everything she can to restore it to its former days of glory. For example, Otis has his first crop of coming 2 year olds under saddle, and they are all very talented and exciting youngsters.

Chris trains from the mightiest horse to the Mini. A True Versatile horseman!

Chris with his daughter, Emily in March of 2012 for her Senior prom.

Chris Zahnd is the trainer and farm manager for Choose Your Gait Breeding and Kelly’s mentor and best friend. Chris grew up in the area and has been training horses all his life. He learned much of his horsemanship under the guidance of his father, Jerome Zahnd, and except for a two month period when he worked for Steve Dunn of Bud Dunn and Son Stables, he has been training and running his own operation. Chris is the father of two children, Hunter age 16 and Emily, 18. Emily like her father has been showing most her life and is a great equestrian. Chris says that what he likes most about training of his horses is seeing them, and his riders, performing at their best and winning. Chris is a true horseman and perhaps even Chris is a bit amazed at his own versatility… he trains Walking Horses, Racking Horses, Friesians and is even now training and riding in Dressage. He smiles when asked if he ever thought he would be riding a very powerful trotting horse, and posting that trot as if he has been doing it his entire life, when in reality, he learned how to post mainly out of self defense when Kelly purchased Baron for Chris to train. But Chris has proven he is very versatile and will ride a giant, powerful trotting horse, a smooth gaited horse, or will drive a miniature 29” horse to the cart. Some of the great Tennessee Walking Horses that Chris started as youngsters are World Grand Champion, Three Under Par, World Champion, They Call Me Sampson, Escape From Alcatraz, Generators Cashing In, Lots of Luck, Jazz Talking, World Champion, Santa Monica, Lady’s Ebony Ace and he grins as he list that the greatest of them all he has started and been the only one to ever train, World Grand Champion, Outta Line. Outta Line is a result of the greatest advice Kelly says she ever received from Chris. He told her to trade her show horse, The Dance Hall Doctor, for the green, unfinished two year old, Outta Line. She was hesitant to make the trade, as she had just won a Reserve ribbon on Doc at the Celebration, her highest ribbon ever at the Celebration, but she trusted that Chris knew best, as he proved he did, when a less than 2 years later, that green colt, now a 3 year old, carried Kelly to her only World Grand Championship ride, in classes containing some of the industry’s top aged horses. Training horses is something that Chris absolutely loves and has always done. Chris laughed and said he remembers his first show was in the leadline class. He use to go and show with his sister. He says he still today believes something that he was taught a while ago, “That if you know you are right, keep your head up, stay the course, and right will always win out, regardless of who is attacking and persecuting you.” Words to live by, words that Chris lives by daily.

A third barn serves as the “mare motel” for those ladies that choose to visit with the boys personally. Chris and Kelly both welcome you to stop by and visit their facility, and meet the Stallions. A third barn serves as the “mare motel” for those ladies that choose to visit with the boys personally. Chris and Kelly both welcome you to stop by and visit their facility, and meet the Stallions. They are very proud of the operation and are looking forward to what the future holds for 2013.
