A message from our President:

The Jerald Sulky Company is noting our 121st year of service to the horse business.

Our goal remains the delivery of the absolute best performance horse-drawn vehicles

and the development of a company ready to drive forward for another 121 years. In

2018 we invested in our infrastructure and production facility. (Have you been to the

factory for a tour? If not put it on your bucket list!) For 2019 we have even bigger

goals. Stay tuned for a product line announcement that will broaden our catalog to

include another critical horse industry product - also to be made here in Waterloo.

New for 2019 is a major change in the way we engage our clients and the secondary

marketplace. For the past 120 years we have looked at ourselves as a manufacturer of

new product and a refinisher of customer-loved and owned equipment. As we work to

support industry trends, we are announcing a factory equipment buy-back and

refurbishment program. Through this program we will actively acquire used equipment

that has a meaningful quantity of sound parts; from this equipment we will offer a line

of top-end factory refurbished equipment at a lower-than-new price point. This

equipment will support the marketplace in two ways; it will provide an exit for owners

that have equipment to disperse and will provide a lower cost entry point for new

entrants to the expanding competition driving industry. This program is available both

direct and through our dealers. Please talk to an Authorized Jerald Sulky Dealer or our

office regarding equipment you have to sell or about available refurbished inventory.

This catalog is intended to help you understand how to configure our vehicles, speak the

language of horse drawn vehicles, and to make conversations between you and where

you purchase your carts and parts more fruitful. There is a lot of content in this catalog,

so if you need any guidance our dealers and our office is happy to help. As always

please remember that nobody can care for your vehicle better than the factory that built

it; our craftsmen are amazing at repairing and refinishing your vehicle. If the time has

come to freshen up your ride just give us or a dealer a call. In closing we watched this last year as you delivered some truly remarkable

performances in our vehicles. From World and National Championships to the re-

Victory Lap Competition Shine Detailer

One of the big issues we hear about here at Jerald is "why does the paint and patent leather of my beautiful Jerald

cart have a foggy filmy appearance?" The answer usually comes down to the wrong cleaning product. If you ask

horse people what they use to clean their carts, many will quickly reply "Pledge!" Furniture cleaner is

wonderful...for furniture. However, our vehicles are finished with automotive style finishes, and the wax that

furniture polishes leave behind to help preserve and condition your favorite dining room table have the opposite

effect on your cart - it covers up the shine and luster that your finish had when new.

Specifically formulated for use on Jerald Sulky Co. performance horse-drawn vehicles, use Victory Lap Competition

Shine Detailer to get a low-friction and deep gloss shine every time you put your vehicle on the track or in the ring.

Use this proprietary formula on all hard surfaces including: paint, patent leather, chrome, brass, vinyl, stainless

steel, plastic, clear coat and other non-porous surfaces. Safely cleans surfaces of dust, sweat, light oil, fingerprints,

Buy-Back Program and Factory Refurbished Vehicles

The market is changing, and so are we. For much of our history we counted on our network of Authorized Dealers

to manage the secondary market. New for 2019 we are partnering with our dealers to not only improve the way

the secondary market operates, but to bring to market a line of factory refurbished vehicles that are beautiful and

affordable. If you fall into one of the categories below then this program is meant for you:

• You are exiting the horse business and have excess equipment to sell.

• You have upgraded your equipment and have older performance vehicles that are not suitable for use in

competition.

• You are a new entrant to the horse business and have a tight budget.

All authorized Jerald Sulky dealers are participants in this program; all dealers can buy-back old equipment and all

dealers have access to the refurbished equipment list. You can also sell equipment directly to the factory.

To participate in the buy-back program:

1. Grade your cart

2. Contact a dealer or the factory

3. Agree to a buy-back price

4. Coordinate transportation of your cart

Carts are generally valued from 1% to 40% of their new catalogued value for buy-back. Customers may be able to

negotiate better prices on used equipment when trading it in on a new unit.

Used units are graded on the following scale:

U1) Junk – parts or scrap value only.

U2) Restoration Candidate – full restoration required.

U3) Poor – requires major body repair and is unusable in its current condition. May be a modern cart that has a rusted

undercarriage, pitted chrome, or major parts are broken.

U4) Fair – Unit has moderate paint loss or damage but is structurally sound; could be hooked to a horse and driven at

home for practice. Unit may have old-style parts such as cage-bearing wheels, straight heels, or an unstylized

buggy box.

U5) Good – signs of wear and use, but intact. Paint scratches do not go through to the substrate. Leather is worn or

chapped, textiles are damaged or missing. The cart has all modern styling such as drop heels and new-style hubs.

U6) Very Good – The unit might look acceptable from a distance or could be used in the show ring at an unrated show.

U7) Excellent – The cart could be used now in a rated show. The paint is in good shape with only minor scratches.

Chrome is without pitting. The cart has all modern styling such as drop heels and new-style hubs as well as Cordura

fabric covers that are in functional condition.

U8) Like New – All original with a nearly unused appearance. Only the slightest evidence of handling and use exists on

this cart. Matching covers and all textiles are included. Chrome is in factory-new condition and wheels are perfect

or near-perfect.

Much like automobile manufacturers, the Jerald Sulky Company has proven “running gear” families

providing the foundation for a number of vehicles. Here is a quick guide to these common components:

The Model A Family

Show Pleasure Carts

The Model A, most frequently called the “Roadmaster,” is the Jerald’s

premier Show Pleasure cart. This vehicle features an open-wheel design

and is available in many sizes to fit a wide variety of breeds from the

smallest mini to the largest Friesian. The Roadmaster looks great with

the base configuration but is available with an array of upgrades

including stained finishes, wood wheels, chrome undercarriage, brass

appointments, and the extra tall “Vision” variant for high visibility and

unusually tall horses. Drivers of the Model A put their feet in a basket

suited for drivers in attire from jods and suits to evening gowns.

The Model J Family

Road Bike/Roadster

The Model J is found in both show cart and jog cart configurations. This

vehicle is often called a “Bike” by professional horsemen. When

configured as a show cart it is known as a “Road Bike” or “Roadster” and

is often dressed with chrome accents for speed classes. As a conditioning

and jog cart the Model J is configured with heavy-duty wheels. Drivers of

the Model J place their feet in stirrups fastened to the shafts.

The Model C Family

Combination Carts

Three vehicles are offered for those who desire a flexible “Combination”

cart or who may be required to use a closed wheel vehicle. Fitted with

both a foot basket and stirrups, these vehicles quickly convert to show in

both pleasure and roadster classes. Sizes range from the smallest mini to

the largest horse. These carts feature a closed-wheel truss-style axle,

bench style seat, singletree and a foot basket. Combination carts have

fewer amenities on the base models as they are often used both at home

and in the show, but they can easily be configured with upgraded

appointments including chrome and show pleasure style seats.

Custom vehicle appointments including special materials, colors, and pinstripe art is available for many of the above items, but

longer production times and additional charges may result.

The basics of Pinstripe selection:

At the Jerald Sulky Company all pinstriping work is still

done by hand, with a steady clutch on a squirrel hair brush

and exceptional skill. Hand laid pinstripe is part of the

“fingerprint” of your cart; the imperfections are part of

what makes each specimen perfect. Selecting the right

pinstripe style not only accents the finish of your vehicle,

but it also helps your cart to blend with the appointments

of your harness, color of your horse, attire of the driver,

and further determines the focus of your overall image.

There are three standard pinstripe styles:

• Double Line: Two parallel lines of the same or

different colors.

• Triple Line: Three parallel lines of the same or

complimentary colors.

• Ribbon & Edge: Two parallel lines of the same

color with the center space between the lines

(the ribbon) filled with color.

Don’t forget - you may be asked to indicate accent colors;

for example, if you build a walnut cart with black double

line pinstripe on a black painted undercarriage, you will be

asked to indicate complimentary accent colors on the axle

such as gold or silver spears.

Size Guidance

This section provides generalized guidance to assist you in selecting the correct size vehicle to fit your

horse. These indications are only a guide. While we hope you find these measurements helpful, the

individual physical characteristics of each horse and the visual preferences of each trainer and driver

should be taken into consideration when ordering your vehicle. Your dealer can provide additional

guidance on selecting the correct size and may even be able to fit demonstrator vehicles onto your

horses in order to confirm that you are ordering the best size vehicle for your needs.

For two-wheel show vehicles

If your horse or pony is: Your typical shaft length should be:

Fitment of Shaft Stops One of the most popular show cart options is the addition of shaft stops. Shaft stops

provide confidence that your long-shaft show vehicle stays exactly where it was hitched

with both traditional tie-down and French tug style harnesses. Shaft stops can be factory

installed by Jerald Sulky, but we strongly recommended that shaft stops be shipped loose

with new vehicles and be installed after properly fitting your vehicle to your horse and

harness.

Selecting Wheel Size Most vehicles in the Jerald Sulky catalog can be fitted to multiple wheel options. The sizing of the wheels is

important in the same way as many other elements of your configuration. Selecting a larger wheel creates a more

level appearance to a larger horse while selecting a smaller wheel allows you to “get down behind” your horse and

let the horse shine in the image. Consult your trainer, a Jerald Dealer, or our office to discuss further the correct

fitment of wheels for your need.

Return, Warranty, and Shipping Policies Many Jerald Sulky Co products are hand-crafted and made-to-order. Therefore, all sales are final for custom products, excluding conditions meeting the criteria for manufacturer defect. To return standard replacement parts, unused products must be returned to the purchasing location within 30 days of purchase. Products that have been used, soiled, or are otherwise not in new condition will only be returned at dealer or manufacturer discretion. There is a minimum 20% re-stocking fee for standard parts returns. Freight is non-refundable and return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer; it is strongly recommended that return shipments are sent by traceable carrier. Should a product have a manufacturer defect or an order be fulfilled incorrectly Jerald Sulky or its Authorized Dealer will work with the customer to repair or replace the product and fulfill the order as expected. Manufacturer defects must be identified and remedied on a timely basis. Fitment of a product to your horse, the desire to have ordered a different color, and wear or handling damage do not constitute a manufacturer defect. Natural and stained carts expose the natural grain of the underlying wood substrate including machining marks and variable stain absorption; this wood grain and evidence of the craftsman nature of the product work together to create a unique “fingerprint” for each cart. Jerald Sulky carefully selects wood and other materials to construct each vehicle, including grain and knot placement, but your stained cart will not look identical to any other. Custom order customers are welcome to participate in the wood selection process (and in some cases such as the Legacy Series carts are required to participate) by coming to the manufacturing plant in Waterloo and selecting lumber. However, if a customer is not satisfied with the natural pattern of exposed wood grains or knots this does not constitute a manufacturer defect. Carts and certain parts cannot by the nature of their size be shipped fully assembled; your nearest dealer or the manufacturing plant provides assembly service as part of the sales experience. Should a customer be located too far from a dealer to avail themselves of assembly services and require direct shipment some product assembly is required. When assembling the product a detailed inspection for shipping damage and some minor adjustments are necessary (such as stirrup adjustment arm placement and foot basket installation). Assembly requires minor mechanical ability and a bit of time; failure to properly assemble or adjust a product does not constitute a manufacturer defect. Our products do not have a warranty other than our commitment to remedy issues determined to be a manufacturer defect. Our products are built to provide years of reliable service, but they are generally connected to a large and unpredictable animal and used in a competitive and sometimes aggressive manner. As a result, we cannot be responsible for issues that arise as a result of using the product. Most often we hear stories about our vehicles functioning for decades but we have also heard stories about a young horse destroying its cart and harness on the first use; this is a risk of the sport, not a responsibility of the manufacturer. Further, the use of our products does not create a liability for us as the manufacturer; most horses are well trained and most reinsman are qualified, but accidents do happen. Cart shafts are made out of wood and harnesses out of leather because they break. Should an accident happen, wood shaft carts can break away from the horse allowing the horse to be detached and the situation controlled. Carts therefore must be inspected for damage and structural integrity after any incident and should be inspected or serviced by Jerald Sulky or an Authorized Dealer should structural integrity be compromised. Jerald Sulky ships products by commercial package and LTL freight carriers. Shipments are insured against damage during shipping. To qualify for insurance coverage against shipping damage, customers are required to inspect deliveries for visible damage before signing any shipper receipt or Bill of Lading. It is the customer’s responsibility to confirm any visible damage has been documented by the delivery driver. Customers must report damage to Jerald Sulky or their Authorized Dealer immediately and must open parcels or shipments to inspect products and report any concealed shipping damage within 3 days of receiving a shipment in order for insurance coverage to remain in-force. Freight sent by LTL carrier must be sent to a commercial location with proper receiving and unloading capabilities. Should a customer need additional freight services such as a liftgate or delivery to a residential, gated, or other limited access facility please notify Jerald Sulky or your Authorized Dealer so that accommodations can be made. LTL carriers will charge additional fees for limited access, residential deliveries, and liftgate services not specified on the Bill of Lading and these charges will be billed to the customer.

The “C” Cart - Combination Cart Overview

Three vehicles are offered for those who desire a flexible use cart or who may be required to use a closed wheel vehicle in

pleasure driving classes. Configured with a closed-wheel “truss style” axle and fitted with a singletree, foot basket and stirrups

these vehicles quickly convert from show pleasure to roadster configurations.

These carts have fewer amenities on the base models as they are often used both at home and in the show, but they can easily

be configured with upgraded appointments including chrome wire-spoke wheels and chrome undercarriage appointments.

These models can be more complex to order as a result of the wide variety of ways these carts can be configured. If you have

questions about your configuration, you should consult your dealer or the Jerald Sulky offices.

Important configuration options to note include:

• Wheels: Combination Vehicles are configured by default with 18” heavy duty stainless steel wheels. These wheels are

the same wheels offered on our Super J+ conditioning carts and while attractive and very durable they do not have

the same luster as the chrome wire-spoke wheels. If a show cart is being built using the Combination cart foundation,

you will likely want to select the 24” chrome wire-spoke wheel upgrade.

o Note on wheel sizing: We know that tire sizes can be confusing – for example how does an 18” and a 24” tire fit

on the same cart and look right? The answer has to do with the way that wheel measurements are established by

the motorcycle and bicycle industries. Our 18” wheel is fitted with a “street legal moped” tire; street legal wheels

measure the diameter of the wheel. In contrast, the 24” chrome show wheel fitted with our Jerald branded flat-

tread tire is considered a bicycle wheel; bicycle wheels traditionally indicate the outside diameter of the tire. So

even though you might perceive these two wheels as significantly different, they are actually both similar in size

and are both proper fitments to the Combination line of carts.

• Seats: Combination Vehicles can be configured with either a bench style roadster seat (default), or a show pleasure

style seat with a seat-rail and removable cushion. It is important that you select the option that is correct for your

situation, as this configuration cannot be easily changed after your vehicle is manufactured.

there is no comparable. The Legacy Series, typically

built on the Royal Classic Fine Harness Buggy chassis, is

created to the exacting specifications of each owner.

Crafted from hand selected exotic timber species and

garnished with appointments reserved for

only the most exceptional vehicles, each Legacy Series

vehicle is yours to enjoy in the show ring, in your

carriage house, and as a lasting heirloom.

Timber Species Selection

Hand crafted of the most exotic and beautiful woods on the planet, the legacy series

vehicle timber selections include species such as Waterfall Bubinga, Lacewood, Macassar

Ebony, and Afzelia Xylay. Components of the vehicle can even be made of heirloom

or remnant furnishings of true meaning and birthright.

Appointments

Capstone finishes including gold touches, deep cut scrollwork, fine textiles,

candied paints, and custom hand striping accent the vehicles.

Design and Delivery

Delivery times for Legacy Vehicles can vary from months to years depending on the

requirements of the owner. Several design and material selection sessions are likely

necessary during the pre-construction phase. Vehicles are delivered by white-glove service

to both domestic and international destinations.

The Jerald Sulky Company offers many services for your existing vehicle including refinishing, tune-ups, and

accident repair. It is generally necessary to return your vehicle to the plant in Waterloo, IA to obtain these

services, but the resulting outcome can be a like-new vehicle for less than the cost of buying new. There is no

substitute for a factory refinish when it comes to making your vehicle look it’s best, and the cost of factory

services are often less than secondary market providers.

Refinishing service base price includes strip-down of your existing finish, repair of minor structural defects, new

paint/stain and pinstripe, new leather shaft appointments, and balancing & tune-up. Refinishing services do not

include repairing, replating or replacing chrome components and any additional required parts are charged in

addition to the base refinish price.

Four Wheel Vehicle Replacement Shafts Individual Replacement shaft components for four wheel vehicles are generally not sold. Components of four wheel vehicle shaft sets

including wood components and irons are built by Jerald Sulky craftsmen to produce a perfect article based on the unique characteristics

of the materials selected for each shaft set. As a result customer replacement of an individual component is rarely possible and

damaged shaft sets should be sent to the Jerald Sulky Co. factory for repair and refinishing.

Complete replacement shaft sets can be found in the “Options and Accessory” pages of each four wheel vehicle.

Runabout Replacement Shafts – Finished in Natural with Tip Runabout shafts are easily replaceable by the consumer and come complete with tip installed. Does not include shaft stop.

Vehicle Ordering Guide Use Instructions

Much like ordering a car from your favorite automobile manufacturer, ordering a vehicle from the Jerald Sulky Co.

includes many choices and options. As a result, order accuracy is a key element in receiving exactly the vehicle that

you want. We recognize that this process can seem a bit daunting, so the following Vehicle Order Guides are

provided to offer step-by-step assistance in accurately specifying every vehicle choice for some of the most

common vehicles in our catalog. Additionally, where complete vehicles are listed in the front of this catalog,

selections are indicated as “Required,” “Conditional,” and “Optional.”

• For each section marked as “Required” a part number selection is necessary, even if the option indicated

that the choice is “Declined.” If no part number is indicated for a “Required” selection the order will be

returned to you by the Jerald Sulky Co. office until a selection is indicated.

• For each section marked as “Conditional” read the accompanying text carefully as the selection is based

on a previously selected condition regarding the way you are building the particular vehicle.

• For each section marked as “Optional” no selection is required unless the option is desired in the custom

configuration of the vehicle you are building.

Each guide includes the following sections:

• Core Vehicle Selection: These are the part numbers that describe the primary vehicle configuration that

you are selecting – you must select one.

• Accessory items not specified on a SO line item: This area is informational only, and lets you know about

features of your vehicle that are included by default and do not need to be specified on the order.

• Vehicle Choices Section: This includes descriptive items that you must indicate about a vehicle, such as

the primary body color, pinstripe pattern, and pinstripe colors.

• Options and Upgrades Section: This section contains selections specific to the vehicle that you are

configuring.

o When a selection is indicated as [Required] you must specify an item number from that section

on the order. Failure to specify an item from each [Required] section will cause the order to be

delayed while the dealer service team works to specify the item.

o When a selection is indicated as [Optional] it is only required if the selection is desired by the

customer; these items are often add-ons such as the inclusion of a vehicle cover or the addition

of stirrups to a Mini Pleasure cart.

o “Items to Consider” are suggestions for common inclusions with a vehicle package; these include

equipment like an additional shaft assembly for a Viceroy or spare tubes and tires for your

wheels.
