Executive Director’s Message
Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) is pleased to have been
able to facilitate the attendance and participation of some of the region’s most
talented and versatile music professionals and artistes at the World Music Expo
(WOMEX) 2011.
The Caribbean region is filled with a plethora of musical talent and genius, and we
thought it fitting to provide an outlet to foster this ingenuity. However, we could not
have had our largest and most successful Caribbean delegation at WOMEX without
the partnership of key stakeholders, namely the Regional Council of Martinique
(RCM), the CARICOM Secretariat, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Martinique (CCIM).
Upon the conclusion of the WOMEX 2011 mission, Caribbean Export felt encouraged
by the satisfaction expressed by participants with its efforts to support Caribbean artistes at this international event.
Caribbean Export is even more cognizant of the wide interest in the Caribbean product, which resulted in
important south-south contacts with SABRE (Brazil). The Agency is further mindful of the opportunities yet to be
explored for deeper cooperation and the promotion of exchanges and best practices between CARIFORUM,
French Outermost Caribbean States (FCORs), and African States.
In looking ahead, Caribbean Export held discussions with the representatives from WOMEX to examine how best to
engage for the benefit of the industry. A possible collaborative initiative discussed was workshop facilitation
throughout the region to provide technical assistance, mentoring, and training on the Business-to-Business
engagement process.
The Agency is committed to working with our beneficiaries throughout their journey to success and as such
periodically monitors progress made since initial engagement. Suggestions and recommendations are also taken
on board to ensure our responses and interventions remain relevant.
In this regard, Caribbean Export is pleased to have facilitated the participation of twenty-two (22) representatives
of the cultural industries, of which music and related business formed a major part, on a Study Tour to Manchester
England, Berlin Germany and Paris France during the month of July 2012. The Agency has also held discussions
with the organisers of WOMEX 2012 with regards to favourable options to facilitate a Caribbean presence at the
Thessaloniki Greece venue from October 17-21, 2012.
Caribbean Export remains committed to supporting the export of cultural goods and services from CARIFORUM
states. Support to the Music industry is critical to the achievement of the Agency’s work programme. This effort
demonstrates our commitment to facilitate greater contact between the Private sector from CARIFORUM states
and those from FCORs. We are pleased to have partnered with the regional council of Martinique on this initiative
and look forward to improving the level of cooperation between our institutions
We will continue to pledge our support to the growth and export development of the Caribbean music industry,
and by extension the Cultural Industries, as we take Caribbean Excellence to the World.

WOMEX runs the last
weekend of October
every year. Although
WOMEX is primarily
intended for
professionals and
trade visitors within the
world music scene,
locals and tourists can
buy tickets for most of
the showcases.
WOMEX (World Music Expo) is an international world music support
and development project based in Berlin, whose main event is an
exposition held annually in different locations throughout Europe.
It integrates a trade fair, showcases, conferences, film market,
networking sessions, and awards. Musicians and their works have
the possibility to make contacts for international touring and
album distribution.
For 2009-2011, WOMEX was hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark in a
new partnership with World Music Fair Copenhagen, a consortium
of the Roskilde Festival, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and tourist
organization Wonderful Copenhagen. Additional partners were
the events producers Welcome, the Danish Center for Culture and
Development, Global CPH and World Music Denmark.
In 2011, The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean
Export) in collaboration with the Regional Council of Martinique
(RCM) under the cooperation programme INVEST KARAIB,
facilitated the participation of Caribbean music professionals and
artistes at the World Music Expo (WOMEX) 2011. Thirty (30) persons
from fourteen (14) CARIFORUM States directly benefitted from this
international trade event, participating in a joint Caribbean
pavilion at the event. With music identified as a priority sector
under INVEST KARAIB, WOMEX was chosen as a prime venue since
it held particular interest to both Martinique and CARIFORUM
States.
Facilitation of this mission represented a significant milestone
towards the attainment of longer-term results for the Creative
Industries of the Caribbean region. These speak to: Enhanced
Cooperation between the CARIFORUM and FCOR Private Sector;
Enhanced co-produced material; Enhanced cooperation
between Caribbean Export and RCM; Identification of technical
assistance needs and the requisite support offered to firms;
Increased distribution of music from the Caribbean and an
increase in the number of international performances and
Increased Business linkages developed between CARIFORUM
Music Representatives and those from the Rest of the World.

I wish to again extend my appreciation for being chosen to participate in
WOMEX 2011, as a part of the Caribbean delegation. I think that the
greatest benefit from the opportunity was the networking, fellowship and
exchange of ideas amongst all participates.
I had the opportunity to build relationships that might easily translate into
collaborations over time. Most importantly, I was able to introduce our
delegation and some of the people I met at WOMEX, to the music of the
Bahamas. WOMEX opened much-needed opportunities for the Caribbean
music industry, and I trust more
activities will be implemented to
nurture and help to grow our music
communities and industries in region.
Though at times overwhelming, I found
the Expo itself a great experience, and
equally found the internal Caribbean
Export workshops and activities
incredibly beneficial. I believe we
might be better served to a meeting of
the Caribbean music community, with
an agenda and plans for consistent
follow-up activity. For instance, a
“Caribbean World Music Industry
Retreat”, which may serve as a more
intimate version of WOMEX, would
probably be ideal.
A number of critical WOMEX connections were established during this event
and I remain in touch with them currently. They have most recently allowed
me to use them as a reference when submitting my music to major
production music companies such as Universal and EMI. This is a definite
advantage when trying to get the attention of a major music publishing
entity.
Commendation must therefore go to the Caribbean Export team for such a
massive undertaking. The atmosphere in which we shared and exchanged
was very inviting and it was a rare treat to not only meet, but also fellowship
with artists, managers, agents, and record label personnel from the 14
countries in the region.

WOMEX 2011 was the most beneficial mission of this type that I
have experienced. The opportunity to meet with and share
opinions and concerns with my Caribbean counterparts was
one of the most important aspects of the trip.
In addition the solid presence of the Caribbean let the "world"
know that we were truly there to do business and I believe it
helped to level the playing field with international counterparts
(France, Australia, etc) with whom I had previously been
exploring business opportunities.
Since the trip, I have had the opportunity to meet with and
entertain persons met in Jamaica (both Caribbean and
international) and I believe in coming months Nanook will be
even better poised to capitalise on ongoing discussions and
negotiations.
WOMEX 2011 afforded me the ability to establish linkages with
like-minded entities region-wide; the ability to re-establish
international networks; attract potential business partners;
access information and resource persons; and the opportunity
to explore industry innovations and trends.
I believe Caribbean Export was the vital element that made
this trip so beneficial. The attention to detail in preparation of
the trip made it easier to focus on the business at hand. Having
persons there not only able, but also willing to assist with
everything from project development and strategizing, to
entertaining possible business partners was an excellent
complement to the strong Caribbean music products and
companies represented.

I was invited to join the Caribbean team of thirty (30) CARIFORUM
delegates to participate in what can be described as the largest
musical faire in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Participation in WOMEX 2011 gave us an opportunity to talk with
each other and to share some valuable insight about the music
industry in general. The team was comprised of persons from 14
CARIFORUM countries.
Team Caribbean, as we were called, had an early induction and
dialogue led by Ivan Berry. It became quite obvious then that the
Caribbean music industry was lagging behind in terms of the
collective experience and the readiness of our group to take
advantage of the networking that presented itself to us.
It was from that session that we decided that even before we enter
into the trade faire that our first task was to network and do more to
promote the music of the region within each other territory.
To all those persons and organizations that saw the reason for me
going to Copenhagen I would like to thank them personally. To
Caribbean Export, the Regional Council of Martinique, Chamber of
Commerce and Industry of Martinique and to my Board of Directors
at the Grenada Cultural Foundation I would like to say thank you for
a wonderful opportunity. The initiative, the vision and the potential
of our people is unlimited. The Caribbean display at WOMEX 2011
and on the train was a show outside of the show that brought much
needed attention to the region. What was obvious is that we can
grab the opportunities once we do the marketing so that we can
expose the world to us.

Stonetree Records BELIZE
The experience of attending WOMEX 2011 with the Caribbean
delegation was beneficial since it allowed us to have a stronger
presence in a very crowded market where individual artists and
companies often find it hard to compete. For Stonetree Records it was
very successful trade fair, we were able to close several new deals
while meeting with of our international partners.
I sincerely hope that Caribbean Export continues to support these
types of initiatives by helping us defray the high costs of attending
international expos. As a result of Caribbean Export's support,
Stonetree Records was able to invest more in promotional materials
during and post-WOMEX and as a result we are now better positioned
to continue to be one of the leading World Music labels in the region.
During WOMEX 2011 we were able to establish some relationships
based on reciprocity, and Kross Kolor was happy to be a part of such
a diverse group of Caribbean participants. Caribbean Export did more
than their fair share in ensuring that networking and training
opportunities were made available for all participants and we look
forward to future collaboration.

Studio Jay Recording TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
WOMEX 2011 was truly an amazing experience, which has and will
continue to play a part in the growth and development of Studio Jay
Recording Ltd. While in Copenhagen, we were able to meet with,
sample and gain an understanding of our neighbouring artists and
music industry practitioners from the Caribbean. The atmosphere
created by the three organising bodies of this delegation - Caribbean
Export, The Regional Council of Martinique and the Martinique
Chamber of Industry & Commerce - was very conducive to a
genuine exchange of ideas and techniques. Even more far-reaching
were the relationships that were established between member
countries on this trip that have continued to develop to this date.
The Caribbean Pavilion was outstanding and provided the
confidence to meet with and set the stage for collaboration with
industry counterparts further afield. It was astounding to learn of how
many opportunities await beyond our shores such as: the vast
number of Annual Music Festivals of every genre that would take
years to explore had we attempted this without the support and
guidance of our sponsors and organisers.
In addition, during this Expo we learnt that our industry counterparts
around the world are open to collaborating with us in the Caribbean
both in live and recording arenas. To date we have already had the
opportunity to entertain in our studio Norwegian Artist/Manager Jon
Henriksen of Samspill International Music Network, who we met at
WOMEX 2011 thus forging a relationship that could lead to future
collaboration between Trinidad and Tobago & Norway.
It is our hope that Caribbean Export would be interested in partnering
with us in future initiatives as their reputation and ability to reach the
entire world will add weight and credibility, which will go a long way
in ensuring that any venture reaches it fullest potential.

Andre Woodvine BARBADOS
My experience at WOMEX 2011 was very positive. The greatest
value of the trip was the relationships I established with my fellow
delegates from the Caribbean region, relationships that have
continued today. I now have a better understanding of the best
strategies and practices to employ while attending a music trade
show and was able to successfully apply them during a recent trip to
MIDEM 2012 held in Cannes, France.
The opportunity for exposure to fresh, different ideas and cultural
enlightenment in the wonderful city of Denmark was priceless.
Obviously attendance at any foreign trade show is costly, Caribbean
Export's assistance was absolutely crucial in making the trip possible
and I am appreciative of this.
First I would like to congratulate again Caribbean Export for giving
my organization the opportunity to take part to the WOMEX in
Denmark last year. It was a rewarding experience in my career as a
representative, manager of artists and show producer. Training
provided as part of the trip to Denmark in prelude to WOMEX
allowed me to review my work, to extend and define my goals while
having a clearer vision of my expectations. I assume the idea of this
great Caribbean who must work together.
This involvement ultimately was a way to understand how turns the
industry of World Music and this first experience allowed me to make
my class. I learned a lot. I wish I could repeat this experience
because I know I will be better armed. I will have better approaches.
And my wish is to be able to participate with artists from my home so
that they measure the level of professionalism of the artists in the
world.

The weather, people, energy, and the entire
atmosphere was a just about the perfect setting
for Caribbean people to grace Copenhagen
with their presence.
Being a part of the team was not only a learning
experience, but also a chance to apply my skills
to the current project. Everyone on the
Caribbean Export team was extremely helpful
and took time from their schedule to pay close
attention to our requests.
I made many invaluable International contacts through WOMEX, even doing
a live interview and performance for German TV and Radio. Even though I
had no WOMEX showcase, my management and I secured a headline spot
at “Pumpeheuset” for the “We remember Natasja” memorial show, which
many of my WOMEX contacts attended. As a result of this engagement, I
also am now in dialogue with a French Tour company organizing a
European tour for summer 2013. I also had one of my WOMEX contacts
come to Barbados to experience my performances at the Barbados
Reggae Festival.
I also generated interest from the management of European Band, “The
Harmonics group” who, along with my team, are in a collaborative effort to
secure bookings in Europe and Africa. I currently have three bookings for
summer 2012.
The WOMEX experience was definitely a very good initiative. Just being
there created opportunities for myself, music and brand, not only
internationally, but also regionally through the integration of a contingent
that was from diverse Caribbean backgrounds. It was one of the best
opportunities available for any artist or company to expand on their present
development in Europe.

Davina Lee ST LUCIA
My WOMEX 2011 experience was a wonderful one and I thank
Caribbean Export for affording me the opportunity. It gave me a great
opportunity to network, even more with my regional counterparts.
Being together with a group of persons from the Caribbean was very
rewarding. I was especially happy to have interactions with my
neighbors from Martinique. Thanks to this meeting I was able to get
music for my film 'The Coming of Org' from Producer Fred Jean Baptiste
and his artiste Madniss.
We are also currently collaborating on music videos and seeing how a
partnership between us can work. Mr. Jean Baptiste has been back to
St Lucia twice for meetings where we met with other Audio/ Visual
practitioners. We are hoping that more collaboration between St Lucia
and Martinique can happen in Audio/ Visual.
Another great opportunity for my film arose from attendance at
WOMEX 2011. While there, I realized that IMZ screens music related
films during the event. I have submitted my recently completed film for
consideration for WOMEX 2012's IMZ screenings. I am currently awaiting
word on whether it has been accepted. If it has been accepted I will
hopefully be presenting my film in Greece at this year's WOMEX.
My first attendance at WOMEX was a learning experience, seeing how
things work in the world music arena and seeing how I fit in as a
filmmaker. What I would love to see is more inter-regional meetings
between musicians and A/V practitioners.
14 14 lorem ipsum :: [Date]
Participation in WOMEX 2011 was an essential step in building a
professional network, within the Caribbean and internationally.
Relations between Caribbean professionals are often difficult because
of the geographical and linguistic fragmentation. This type of meeting
helps to strengthen links between colleagues of the same region. A
number of these colleagues - Erica Smith COSCAP from Barbados, Ivan
Duran of Stonetree Records of Belize, and Roldan Marmol of the
Dominican Republic, were subsequently invited to attend meetings of
professional musicians in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in January 2012, under
the project "Network World Music Festival" an initiative led by the
French association "Free Zone", with support from the program for ACP
cultural industries of ACP Group of States funded European Union.
Also, due to the international exposure and visibility acquired,
CARACOLI has been chosen to partner on a number of international
projects. These meetings have yielded concrete results in terms of
contract and collaboration.
Caribbean Export provided not only the financial assistance to make it
possible to participate in WOMEX 2011, but also and more importantly,
facilitated the production of a promotional musical CD featuring the
work of the members of the delegation. Caribbean Export also hosted
a crucial preparation session. This initiative has served to bring
Caribbean artistes together thereby creating and utilizing synergies
that would otherwise been untapped.
I believe that Caribbean Export should continue to work toward the
development of the music industry by investing in a number of export-
ready artistes and companies. The Agency should follow the progress
of these artistes and companies in the medium and long term to
ensure positive and sustainable results. I would be even more happy
for Haitian professionals to increase their involvement in the process.

Belizean Society of Composers
Authors Publishers BELIZE
Attending WOMEX 2011 was a great experience. Prior to
submitting the application I was unclear as to how and why
my attending WOMEX would benefit Belizean Society of
Composers Authors Publishers (BSCAP), as the organization
had just recently commenced on the ground activity in Belize
and we had tremendous pressure to commence licensing
music users (as a top priority). In any event, I was encouraged
to apply and participate with the understanding that the
copyright collective management movement would be
pushed from a regional perspective.
While at WOMEX 2011, I was able to meet a number of
talented and professional musicians and colleagues from the
various countries within the Caribbean. I was also able to
network with international counterparts and generate
dialogue as it related to copyright protection from a regional
perspective.
I believe that Caribbean Export can support BSCAP by
keeping us informed of events and opportunities that will
further advance the creative arts community (specifically
musicians) within, and outside of the Caribbean, so that we
can in turn pass the information on to our membership. Also,
by facilitating initiatives throughout the Caribbean that raises
awareness about copyright, and the inherent value that lies
therein, Caribbean Export will further assist BSCAP in
developing into a strong collective management organization
operating from Belize.
