PEOPLES Community Credit Union Merges with SPIRE With a 95% affirmative vote from PEOPLES Community Credit Union (PEOPLES) members, a partnership/merger between SPIRE and PEOPLES became effective July 1, 2017.

Founded in 1939, the Hopkins-based credit union, formally known as SUPERVALU Employees Credit Union, is nearly $22 million in assets. “The 2,700 members of PEOPLES are very excited to have more products available to them, as well as greatly expanded services and branch options,” said Dan Stoltz, SPIRE President/CEO.

The system conversion to bring PEOPLES data into SPIRE’s core processor will take place on October 27, 2017. The merger brings SPIRE’s branch footprint to 17 locations. Beginning Monday, October 30, all SPIRE members will have full-service access (including a free ATM) at the Hopkins branch located at 1541 Highway 7.

Petition Notice Nominations to the slate of candidates for the Board of Directors may be made only by the Nominating Committee or by a petition to the Nominating Committee. If you wish to be placed on the ballot by petition, you must deliver a petition signed by at least 920 SPIRE members (1% of the total membership) to the Nominating Committee c/o Shelly Nicolai at SPIRE by November 10, 2017.

Shelly may be reached by calling 651.641.2332. Nomination petitions must include a certificate signed by the nominee stating agreement to the nomination and willingness to serve if elected. Nominees must meet requirements of board members that are specified in SPIRE’s bylaws. All primary members over the age of 18 with $10 or more in their Share Savings account are eligible to vote.

$20,000 in scholarships available to credit union membersSPIRE members have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship through the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation to help further their higher education dreams.

For the 2017-2018 school year, $20,000 in scholarships will be awarded to college students in both traditional (high school seniors entering college) and non-traditional categories.

From a young age, three to be exact, Thom Lofquist begged his dad to let him paint the spindles on the family’s front porch in Winona, Minnesota. Thom has not set a paintbrush down since. In fact, he sold his first painting, a landscape, for $5 at a lemonade stand.

His career as a professional artist took off when he was employed as an illustrator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and did paintings for Ducks Unlimited.

More recently, Thom freelances his talents, expanding into car art, fantasy-style book illustrations, music covers and murals in homes. His work has become recognized for the light and depth he presents in his art.

His creations have hung in the White House, as a symbol of military

support during the first Gulf war, and also appeared in the movie Miss Congeniality II, starring Sandra Bullock.

SPIRE was fortunate to have Thom beautifully commemorate Dan’s years as King Boreas and Aquatennial Commodore with Archie in St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Thom paints from the heart and finds inspiration within to share his talents with others.

SPIRE Awarded for Youth & Adult Financial Literacy Programs

SPIRE was recently honored by receiving both the 2017 Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Awards. Sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the awards recognize leadership in financial literacy within the credit union movement.

The Desjardins Youth Award was received for the partnership between SPIRE and Elk River High School’s (ERHS) DECA class on the Future Finance Academy program. On day one of the interactive program, 96 ERHS students pre-tested on core financial concepts with an accuracy rate of 39%. On day four, the same students post-tested with 91% accuracy. The students went on to place third in the state DECA competition; winning a trip to the national competition in California.

For the third consecutive year, SPIRE received the Adult Desjardins Award for its commitment to educating

adults throughout Minnesota on financial topics. Throughout 2016, a record-setting 1,052 adults from varying needs and sectors of society were reached with over 110 classroom hours. Since 2008, SPIRE has reached over 4,700 individuals in nearly 500 classroom hours.

“SPIRE believes that it is our duty to provide financial education to adults and youth,” said Bridget Petersen, SPIRE Financial Literacy Coordinator. “Our efforts strive to empower people to become financially successful and thrive throughout life.”

SPIRE will go on to compete at the national level with the youth and adult financial outreach programs.

“The amount of time and dedication SPIRE employees give to these initiatives is impressive,” says Dan Stoltz, “SPIRE employees truly live and breathe our mission of improving lives within our communities!”
